- bridge across the river- across the street
- go across the street
- stand across the roadCHOICE OF WORDS:(1.) Русскому предлогу через, указывающему на движение или пребывание в противоположном значении обозначающему движение, соответствуют английские предлоги across, over и through, отражающие разный характер движения в пространстве. Across указывает на движение с одной стороны на противоположную или на пребывание на противоположной стороне: the bus stops just across the road остановка автобуса на той стороне. Предлог over описывает движение чего-либо на всем протяжении какого-либо пространства: to go over the field пройти по всему полю (от начала до конца). В некоторых контекстах предлоги across и over взаимозаменимы: over/across the river на противоположном берегу реки. Предлог through, в отличие от across и over, указывает на движение через отверстие или пространство, насквозь: to go through the wood пройти лесом/через лес (начать движение на одном конце леса, войти в лес и выйти на противоположном его конце). Словосочетаниям смотреть через очки, пройти через ворота, влезть через окно, дорога идёт через красивую местность соответствуют английские сочетания только с предлогом through: to look through the glasses, to go through the gates, to climb through the window, the road runs through some beautiful country side. (2.) Предлог over многозначен и имеет значение "поверх чего-либо", которое может соответствовать русскому через, поверх: to jump over the fence перепрыгнуть/перемахнуть через забор; to jump over the stream перепрыгнуть через ручей -

113 Ellet, Charles
SUBJECT AREA: Civil engineering[br]b. 1 January 1810 Penn's Manor, Pennsylvania, USAd. 21 June 1862 Cairo, Illinois, USA[br]American engineer who built the world's first long-span wire-cable bridge.[br]Ellet worked for three years as a surveyor and assistant engineer and then studied at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris. He travelled widely in Europe and returned to the USA in 1832. In 1842 he completed the first wire suspension bridge in the USA at Fairmont, Pennsylvania, and in 1846–9 redesigned and built the world's first long-span wire-cable bridge over the Ohio River at Wheeling. It had a central span of 308 m (1,010 ft). It failed in 1854 due to aerodynamic instability. He invented naval rams and in the American Civil War he equipped nine Mississippi river boats as rams; they defeated a fleet of Confederate rams. He died in battle.[br]Further ReadingThe Macmillan Dictionary of Biography, 1981.IMcN -
