ἕλιξ, - κοςGrammatical information: f.Meaning: `convolution, volute, tendril, curl, spiral' (Il.); also as adjective of βόες, et alia ( ποταμός, δρόμος), s. below.Compounds: As 1. member in ἑλίκ-ωψ (s. v.), ἑλικ-άμπυξ (Pi.), ἑλικο-στέφανος (B.) a. o., also, referring to ἑλίσσω, ἑλι- in ἑλί-τροχος `turning a wheel' (A. Th. 205 [lyr.]); on ἑλίχρυσος s. v. As 2. member in τετρα-έλιξ kind of thistle (Thphr., H.), also in ἀμφι-έλισσα, ep. adj. of νηῦς (Hom.), later also of other things (e. g. ἱμάσθλη), prop `forming a ἕλιξ on both sides'.Derivatives: ἑλίκη 1. `willow' s. v.; 2. `spiral, turning' (Arist.), also name of the Great Bear (because of its turning movement; cf. Scherer Gestirnnamen 133but not as adjective); 3. εἱλικόεις `with turnings' (Nic., Opp.; metr. lengthened). Denomin. verb ἑλίσσω, - ίττω, Ion. also εἰλίσσω after εἰλέω (not with Solmsen Unt. 230ff. from *ἐ-Ϝελίσσω), aor. ἑλίξαι, εἰλίξαι `make a turning, wind, turn' (Il.); also with prefix ἐν-, περι- etc.; from there ἑλιγμός ( εἰ-) `turning, whirl' (Hdt.), ἕλιγμα ( εἴ-) `bracelet, curl' (Sapph. [?], Com.), ἕλιξις `turned binding, turning' (medic.), ἑλικτήρ `ear-pendant' (Att.), - ελίκτης in compounds like ἱμαντ-ελίκται `turner of straps' (Democr.), s. Fraenkel Nom. ag. 1, 244; ἑλίγδην ( εἰ-) adv. `turning itself'. Cf. (2.) ἐλελίζω.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Formation as ἧλιξ, χόλιξ, δέλφιξ a. o. (Chantr. Form. 382f.), so prob. from a noun, which was perh. derived from εἰλέω (*Ϝελ-νέ-ω) `turn, wind' (s. v.). - The ep. epithet ἕλιξ is prob. with Bechtel Lex. s. v. and Risch 149 a shortened compound (*ἑλικό-πους, - κραιρα?). Note that the suffix - ικ- mostly makes Pre-Greek words (like - υκ-, cf. on κῆρυξ).Page in Frisk: 1,495-496Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἕλιξ

105 πελεμίζω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to vibrate, to shake', pass. `to tremble' (Il.; Trümpy Fachausdrücke 130 ff., Ruijgh L'élém. ach. 8 1 f.);Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Denominative formation in - ίζω (after ἐλελίζω, στυφελίζω, δνοπαλίζω a.o. with comparable meaning; Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 340) from an unknown noun, approx. *πέλεμα v.t., which may have cognates in Germ., a.o. in the compp. Goth. us-film-a `frightened, appalled' (with usfilm-ei `fright, horror'), OWNo. felms-fullr `full of frightening', which presuppose a noun PGm. * felma- `fright'. If one distinguishes an m-suffix one could connect the group of πάλλω (since Fick KZ 19, 262; further s. WP. 2, 52f.). Also Arm. al̃m-uk `confusion, unrest' (: παλμ-ός, πελεμ-ίζω) can be connected (Adjarian MSL 20, 160). -- Here may also belong πόλεμος; s.v. Furnée 151 (with n. 42) calls πελεμ- entschieden ungriechisch; the suffix - εμ- would be Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 2,497-498Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πελεμίζω

106 στυφελίζω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to strike hard, to dash, to beat, to drive away, to maltreat' (ep. lyr. Il.).Other forms: Aor. - λίξαι.Derivatives: στυφελιγμοί (v. l. - σμοί) m. pl. `maltreatment' (A. Eq. 537 [anap.]). -- Besides στυφελός `hard, raw, stony, severe' (A. in lyr., A. R., Opp., AP; also Arcad. Cyren. after sch. A. R. 2, 1005; cf. Leumann Hom. Wörter 269 f.), second. `astringent, bitter' (AP; after στύφω); κατα- στυφελίζω `raw, stony' (h. Merc., Hes.), ἀ- στυφελίζω `not hard, friendly, smooth' (Thgn., AP); enlarged στυφελώδης `hard' (Q.S.); also στύφλος (on the accent below) `raw, stony' (trag., Lyc.; κατά- στυφελίζω H.), - άριος (Hyettos IIIp; PN?). At first sight ep. στυφελίζω seems a derivation of the later attested στυφελός. Apart from the chronology of the attestations, in that way the meaning of the verb (prop. *`to be, make hard or severe'?) becomes hard to understand. For στυφελίζω one could consider ἐλελίζω as example (Schmoll Die Verba auf - ίζω [Diss. Tübingen 1955] 182), after it στυφελός for στύφλος (Leumann l. c.)? The barytonesis of στύφλος is remarkable (cf. however φαῦλος, μάχλος, κτίλος a.o.), but must be considered more probale as lectio difficilior then the less well attested oxytonesis.Origin: GR [a formation built with Greek elements]X [probably]Etymology: Not well explained. The in spite of the deviating vowel quantity (cf. τύ̄φω: τῠφλός) obvious connection with στύφω is for στύφλος, στυφελός not hard to motivate ('drawing together, -drawn, contract' \> `solid, hard etc.'; e.g. Persson Stud. 193), but is for στυφελίζω not immediately convincing. So the last rather to τύπτω (Curtius 227 etc.)? -- Extensive on στυφελίζω Ruijgh L'élém. ach. 84 ff.Page in Frisk: 2,815Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > στυφελίζω
