3 μαῖα
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `mother', mostly as address of older women (Od.), `nurse, midwife' (Att.), `grandmother' (Dor.); name of a big crab (Arist.; popular-joking, Strömberg Fischnamen 95); a plant, = λεπίδιον (Orib.; cf. γέρων and synonyms in plant-names in Strömberg Pfl.-namen 56 a. 159 n. 1). As PN mother of Hermes (h. Merc.).Derivatives: μαιήϊος and μαιάς = μαιευτικός, - κή (Nonn.), Μαιάς = Μαῖα (ξ 435). Denom. 1. μαιεύομαι `be midwife, bring to birth' (Att.) with μαιεία f. `midwifery' (Pl.), μαίευ-μα `product of midwife's art, delivery', - σις `delivery', - τικός `belonging to delivery, expert' (Pl.), μαιεύτρια `midwife' (S.); 2. μαιόομαι `id.' (hell.) with μαίω-σις `delivery', - τικός (Plu.), μαίωτρα pl. `midwife's wages' (Luc.). μαῖοι adoptive parents (Paros).Origin: GR [a formation built with Greek elements]Etymology: Grammatical enlargement of a Lallwort (cf. μᾶ) with the ι̯α-suffix as in γραῖα (: γραῦς), s. Schwyzer 473, Schwyzer-Debrunner 31, Chantraine Form. 98 and the lit. in W.-Hofmann s. 1. Maia and mamma; also Chantraine REGr. 59--60, 241f. - Lat. 4 πέμπω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to send, to dispatch, to guide, to accompany', midd. (mostly w. prefix) also `to send for smn., to fetch smn.'.Other forms: Aor. πέμψαι, fut. πέμψω (Hom.), aor. pass. πεμφθῆναι (Pi.), perf. πέπομφα (IA.), midd. πέπεμμαι (Att.).Derivatives: 1. πομπή ( ἀνα-, ἀπο-, ἐκ-, προ- a.o.) f. `conduct, escort, procession, pompa' (Il.). 2. πομπός m., also f. `escort, bearer of a message' (Il.), also adj. `guiding, bringing a message' (A., Ael.); from the the prefixcompp. e.g. προπομπ-ός `escort, escortess, guide (m.\/f.), by way of guidance, by way of escort' (A., X.); as 2. member in compp., e.g. ψυχο-πομπ-ός m. `guide of souls' (E.). From 1. or 2. (not always discernable): a. πομπ-αῖος `guiding, leading' (Pi., trag.) ἀπο- πέμπω (LXX, Ph.); b. - ιμος `id.' (Pi., trag.), `sent off' (S.), ἀνα-, δια- πέμπω a.o. (D. S., Luc.); Arbenz 78 a. 89; c. - ικός `belonging to the procession' (X., hell. a. late); d. - ιος `led' (Plot.); e. - ίλος m. name of a fish that accompanies ships, `Naucrates ductor' (Erinna, A. R.; Strömberg Fischnamen 58f., Thompson Fishes s. v.); f. πομπεύω ( προ-, συμ-, ἐπι-, δια-) `to escort, to guide, to partake in a procession' (Il.; also from πομπεύς?, s.bel.); from there πόμπευ-σις, - τής, - τήριος, - τικός; - εῖα pl., - εία f.; prob. also, as backformation, πομπεύς m. `escort, partaker of a procession' (Od., Att., Bosshardt 26f.). -- 3. πέμψις (mostly with ἀπό-, ἔκ-, ἐπι-, μετά- etc.) f. `sending' (IA.). 4. πεμπτήρ m. `escort' (S.Fr. 142 II 10 [lyr.]); προπεμπτήρ-ιος `escorting' (Philostr. VA), ἀπο-, προ-πεμπ-τικός (Men. Rh.); 5. εὑπέμπελος, s.v.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: The above system of forms including the nominal formations follows wellknown patterns and makes no archaic impression. Semantically however, the assumption of a loan is not esp. obvious; innovation with Greek elements can also not be demonstrated. So etymol. quite unclear; vain attempts by Fick BB 18, 137 (s. Bq), by v. Windekens Sprache 7, 52f. (to κομψός a. Lith. švánkus). To be rejected also Deroy Ant. class. 32, 439 ff. (referring to the unclear Myc. peqota).Page in Frisk: 2,502-503Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πέμπω

5 πλύνω
Grammatical information: v.Other forms: ( πλύνεσκον Χ 155), aor. πλῦναι (Od.), fut. πλῠν-έω (ep. Ion.), -ῶ (Att.), pass. perf. πέπλυμαι (IA.), aor. πλυθῆναι (hell.), fut. - θήσομαι (Com. Adesp.).Derivatives: Adj. 1. νεό-, ἔκ-πλυ-τος `newly washed, washed out' (ζ 64 and A., Pl.), πλυτός `washed' (Hp.); 2. ἐϋ-πλυν-ής `washed well' (Od.); 3. πλυν-τικός `belonging to washing' (Pl., Arist.; Chantraine Études 135), πλυ-τικός `id.' (Alex. Aphr.). Subst. 4. πλυνοί m. pl. `washing pits, -troughs, -sites' (Hom., hell.; Chantraine Form. 192) with the dimin. πλύνιον n. (inscr. Sicily); with barytonesis 5. πλύνος m. `laundry' (pap., ostr.; Mayser Pap. I: 3, 3); unclear Ar. Pl. 1061; with πλυνεύς m. `washer' (Att. inscr., Poll.; cf. Bosshardt 81). Further nom. actionis: 6. πλύσις ( περί-, κατά-, ἀπό- πλύνω) f. `washing' (IA.), late ἀπόπλυν-σις (Sophon.); πλύσιμος `belonging to laundry' (pap. IIIa); 7. πλύμα ( ἀπό-, περί- πλύνω; πλύσμα Phot., also mss.) n. `washing-, swilling water, swill' (Hp., Pl. Com., Arist., pap.); 8. πλυσμός πλυτήρ H. Nom. agentis a. istr.: 9. πλύν-τρια f. `washer (fem.)' (Att. inscr., Poll.), - τρίς f. `id.' (Ar.), also `fuller's earth' (botanics in Thphr.; Capelle RhM 104, 58), masc. πλύν-της (Poll.), πλύ-της (EM, Choerob.); also πλυτήρ (H.; s. above) and *πλυν-τήρ in Πλυν-τήρ-ια n. pl. name of a purification-festival (Att. inscr., X.) with - ιών, - ιῶνος m. monthname (Thasos), if not rather analog. after other subst. in - τήρια, - τήριον (s. Chantraine Form. 63 f.); thus κατα-πλυντηρ-ίζω metaph. `to shower with abusive words' prop. `to immerse in swilling water, to drench with swilling water'?; 10. πλύν-τρον n. = πλύμα (Arist.). pl. `payment for washing' (pap. IIIa, Poll.).Etymology: As κρί̄νω from *κρί-ν-ι̯ω, πλύ̄νω from *πλύ-ν-ι̯ω is a nasalpresent with a further yot-suffix; the nasal came also in non-pres. forms; cf. Schwyzer 694. As a whole πλύνω is a Greek creation, but on IE basis (on Armen. bel.). Thus πλυτός agrees formally with Skt. pluta- `swimming, overrun' (first in compp., e.g. uda-plu-t-á- `swimming in the water' [AV]), also with Russ. plot `raft', Latv. pluts `id.' (Russ. LW [loanword]?). Thus πλύσις = Skt. pluti- f., as gramm. expression `vowellengthening', late also `flood'; at least in the lastmentioned case we must reckon with parallel innovation. Both these zero grade forms as perf. midd. pu-plu-v-e a.o. fit in the full-grade present plávate = πλέω; a zero-grade pres., also with nasalsuffix, is found in Arm. lua-na-m (aor. lua-c`i), which agrees also semantically ('wash, bathe') to πλύνω. -- Further s. πλέω and πλώω. (Prob. no to πύελος.)Page in Frisk: 2,564-565Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πλύνω

6 πνέω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to blow, to breathe, to respire, to smell'.Other forms: ep. πνείω (metr. length.), aor. πνεῦσαι (Il.), ipv. ἄμπνυε, midd. -ῡτο, -ύ̄( ν)θη (Hom.), fut. πνεύ-σομαι (IA.). - σοῦμαι (Ar., Arist.), - σω (hell.), perf. πέπνευκα (Att.), pass. πνευσ-θῆναι (Thphr.), - θήσομαι (Aret.).Derivatives: 1. πνοή, Dor. πνο(ι)ά, ep. πνοιή (- οι- metr. condit. after πνείω, Risch 119; on other explanations, which are not to be preferred, Scheller Oxytonierung 83 n. 2 w. lit.) f. `wind, breeze, breath' (Il.); ἀνα-, δια-, ἐκ-πνέω etc. etc.; very often as 2. member, e.g. ἡδύ- ( ἁδύ-)πνοος, - πνους `with a pleasant wind, breath' (Pi., S., E.), ἐπί-πνοος, - πνους `inspired' with ἐπίπνο-ια f. `inspiration' (A., Pl.); - πνοια also beside - πνοή in ἀνά-, ἀπό-, διά- πνέω a.o.; here ἀναπνο-ϊκος `concerning breathing' (Ptol.). 2. πνεῦμα ( ἄμ-, πρόσ- πνέω) n. `wind, breeze, breath, ghost' (Pi., IA.) with πνευμά-τιον (hell.), - τικός `concerning the wind etc.' (Arist.; on the further life (Nachleben) in the westeur. languages. Chantraine Studii clasice 2, 70f.), - τιος `bringing wind' (Arat.), - τώδης `wind-, breathlike of nature, windy' (Hp., Arist.), - τίας m. `asthmatic' (Hp.) with - τιάω `to gasp' (sch.); - τόω, - τόομαι `to blow up, to (cause to) vaporize' (Anaxipp., Arist.) with - τωσις, - τωτικός; - τίζω ( ἀπο-) `to fan by blowing' (Antig., H.) with - τισμός. 3. πνεῦσις f. `blowing', more usu. the compp., e.g. ἀνάπνευ-σις `to breathe again, to inhale, respite' (Il.). 4. With second. σ and τ-suffix as in ἄ-πνευσ-τος, - τί, - τία: πνευσ-τικός `belonging to breathing' (Gal.), more usu. ἀνα-πνέω (Arist.) a.o.; - τιάω `to gasp' (Hp., Arist.). 5. εἴσπν-ηλος, - ήλας `loving, lover' (Call., Theoc., EM), from εἰσ-πνέω `to inspire (love)' with analog. - ηλος; cf. Chantraine Form. 242.Etymology: The regular structure of the above forms is clearly the result of a generalising development, which will also have had zero grade formations as πνεῦσις, ἄπνευστος. Outside the general pattern there are only the isolated ep. forms ἄμ-πνυ-ε etc. `take breath' = `recover from', which may provide a bridge to the semantically slightly deviating but certainly belonging here πέ-πνυ-μαι, - μένος, `mentally active, animated, be sedate'; cf. Ruijgh L'élém. ach. 134 f. Not here prob. πινυ-τή, πινυτός a. cognates, which have only been connected on difficult assumptions; s.v. In any case ἄμπνυε, πέπνυ-μαι are not with Schulze Q. 322 ff. to be separated from πνέω. -- From other languages only some Germ. formations can be compared: OWNo. fnýsa `sniff', OE fnēosan `sneeze', which like πνευ- may contain an IE eu-diphthong; beside them there are however several variants, e.g. OWNo. fnasa, OHG fnehan, which show the unstable character of these orig. onomatop. words. Uncertain is the connection of Skt. abhi-knū́yate `be moist, sound, stink' (Dhātup., Lex.) with dissim. from * abhi-pn- (Mayrhofer s. knū́yate). -- The further analysis of πνέ(Ϝ)-ω in * p-ne-u-mi with nasal infix to the root pu- (assumption by Schwyzer 696 α after Pedersen IF 2, 314) is in the case of a word of this meaning hardly convincing. Further forms w. lit. in WP. 2, 85, Pok. 838f. Here also ποιπνύω; cf. also πνί̄γω.Page in Frisk: 2,566-567Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πνέω

Compounds, e.g. εὑ-, κακο-πρᾱγ-ία f. `prosperity, success', resp. `accident, misfortune' (Pi., Att.) with εὑ-, κακο-πρᾱγ-έω (Att.); anal. δυσ-, κακο-πρᾱγής (Vett. Val., H., not from πρᾶγος); also εὑ-πραξ-ία, Ion. - πρηξ-ίη f., after πρᾶξις, πρᾶξαι.Derivatives: (Compact survey). Nom. actionis: 1. πρᾶξις, πρῆξις (also w. δια-, κατα- a.o.) f. `realisation, accomplishment, advancement, act, exaction' (Il.) with πραξ-είδιον n. dimin. (EM), - ιμος `realisable' (Cyprus II-IIIp), `recoverable' (Delos I-IIp), also πράκτιμος (from Dor. *πρᾶκτις or after πρακτι-κός?) `liable to a money-penalty' (Delphi IIa). Further, with formation after the adj. abstr. (cf. Schwyzer 468 f.), the compp. προ-πραξ-ία f. `precedence in negotiation' (Acarnan. inscr. V-IVa), ὑπερ-πράξ-ιον n. `over-exaction, blackmailing' (Mylasa Vp); cf. also 10. below. -- 2. πρᾶγμα (posthom.), Ion. πρῆχμα (\< - κσμ-; inscr.), πρῆγμα (Hdt.; for πρῆχμα?, s. Schulze Festschr. Kretschmer 217 ff. = Kl. Adj. πρακτικός `concerning action, skilled, practical' (Att.; Chantraine Études 140).Etymology: All forms go back on a common stem πρᾱκ- (analog. πρᾱγ-; Schwyzer 715), which is a κ-enlargement of the zero grade πρᾱ- in πρᾱ-θῆναι, πέ-πρᾱ-μαι, πι-πρά̄-σκομαι etc. (s. πέρνημι) with further connection with πέρᾱ, πείρω (s. vv.) etc. The function of the velar (cf. πλήσσω: πλη-γ-ή, τμή-γ-ω: τέμ-ν-ω, τέμα-χος a.o.) can be designated as terminative (Schwyzer 702 w. n. 5 a. lit.). Assuming a nominal *πρᾱκ- (Schw. 496) is superfluous and unconvincing. For the primary character of πράσσω, πρᾶξαι tell also the old deriv. πρᾶξις, πρῆξις; on this Schw. 505 (where n. 6 is reckoned with a "derived πρήσσω"). -- On meaning and use of πράσσω s.
