По его мнению, всякий индивидуализм отмечен печатью невроза, если человек предоставлен самому себе и погружен в одиночество, которое неминуемо сопряжено с насилием, разрушением и смертью. В конце этого странствия, оборачивающегося резней, в живых остается только один герой, в нравственном отношении спасенный женщиной.С точки зрения формы, Голая шпора наиболее зрелищна и виртуозна из всех 5 фильмов. Это видно уже по самим принципам, положенным в основу повествования. Единство действия. Минимум персонажей. Никаких интерьеров, будь то хижина или салун. Ни секунды передышки: сцены, где действие останавливается или кажется приостановленным, служат, наоборот, для подготовки очередной хитрости, махинации, которая проявит себя в следующей сцене. Природа – как правило, грубая, крутая, опасная (скалы, горная река, пещера) – предлагает человеку множество естественных и разнообразных возможностей проявить врожденную жестокость и дикарские порывы (столкнуть себе подобного вниз, утопить его и т. д.).
