The Academy has been regarded by some as a conservative institution, out of touch with the everyday language used in the street and the varieties of Spanish spoken in Latin America. To address the latter issue, closer ties have been established with the various corresponding Academies of each of the Latin American countries, and regular international conferences have been held since 1951.
