Il diverso significato delle espressioni italiane smettere di fare qualcosa e smettere (di fare quello che si sta facendo) per fare qualcosa viene reso in inglese dalla duplice reggenza di to stop, seguito dal gerundio nel primo caso e da to + infinito nel secondo: smettila di fumare! = stop smoking! dopo due ore di lavoro, smise per fumarsi una sigaretta = after two hour's work, he stopped to smoke a cigarette. - Si noti anche come l'inglese risolve l'ambiguità semantica di una frase del tipo smettere di fumare: se indica una situazione momentanea, si traduce con to stop smoking; se indica invece una decisione definitiva, si traduce con to give up smoking.
