Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `true, real', mostly in sing. n. ἐτεόν ( ἐτεά pl. Υ 255, reading quite uncertain); also as adv. `really' (Hom., Theoc.); in question-sentences `really' (Ar.); ἐτεῃ̃ adv. `in reality', also nom. ἐτεή f. `reality' (Democr.).Dialectal forms: Myc. PN etewokereweijo from Ε᾽τεϜοκλέϜης.Compounds: Often as 1. member in names like Έτεό-κρητες pl. `Kreter stricto sensu, original Cretans' (τ 176; cf. Risch IF 59, 25), Έτε-άνωρ (Thera VIIa), ΈτέϜ-ανδρος (Kypros VIIa), cf. Sommer Nominalkomp. 185 and 199; Έτεο-κλῆς (Tegea etc.; rendered in Hitt. Tau̯ag(a)lau̯aš; cf. Schwyzer 79); also ἐτεό-κριθος f. `real κριθή' (Thphr.; determinative comp. formally adapted to a bahuvrihi; vgl. Strömberg Pflanzennamen 28f.).Derivatives: Beside it ἔτυμος `true, real' (Il.; prose has ἀληθής) with ἐτυμό-δρυς f. `real oak' (Thphr.); τὸ ἔτυμον `the true (original) meaning of a wod, the etymology' (Arist.); as 1. member in ἐτυμο-λογέω `discover the true meaning' with ἐτυμολογία, - λογικός (hell.; formally after ψευδο-λογέω a. o.; cf. Schwyzer 726); ἐτυμό-της = τὸ ἔτυμον (Str.). - Expressive reduplicated formation with rhythmical lengthening of the original first syllable ἐτήτυμος `true, real, authentic' (Il.); the form remains surprising (cf. Schwyzer 447 n. 2; diff. Bq s. ἐτά) with ἐτητυμία (Call., AP). Lengthened form ἐτυμώνιον ἀληθές H.; cf. Chantraine Formation 42f.Etymology: For the ending cf. κενε(Ϝ)ός `empty, idle'; so ἐτε(Ϝ)ός supposes a diphthongal u-stem, of which the zero grade is seen in the enlarged ἔτυ-μος (pattern?); beside this u-stem ἐτάζω, ἐτά ἀληθῆ, ἀγαθά H. seem to point to an o-stem. - Further analysis uncertain; s. ἐτάζω. 54 marginal cost
Econthe amount by which the costs of a firm will be increased if its output is increased by one more unit, of if one more customer is served.EXAMPLEIf the price charged is greater than the marginal cost, then the revenue gain will be greater than the added cost. That, in turn, will increase profit, so the expansion in production or service makes economic sense and should proceed. The reverse is also true: if the price charged is less than the marginal cost, expansion should not go ahead. The formula for marginal cost is:Change in cost /change in quantityIf it costs a company $260,000 to produce 3,000 items, and $325,000 to produce 3,800 items, the change in cost would be:$325,000 – $260,000 = $65,000The change in quantity would be:3,800 – 3,000 = 800When the formula to calculate marginal cost is applied, the result is:$65,000 /800 = $81.25If the price of the item in question were $99.95, expansion should proceed.Relying on marginal cost is not fail-safe, however; putting more products on a market can drive down prices and thus cut margins. Moreover, committing idle capacity to longterm production may tie up resources that could be directed to a new and more profitable opportunity. An important related principle is contribution: the cash gained (or lost) from selling an additional unit. -

JDoeve, Jewish Hermeneutics in the Synoptic Gospels and Acts, ’54, 185–87). Jer 39:9 and Zech 11:12 use the verb ἱ. in the sense weigh out on scales (Hom.; X., Cyr. 8, 2, 21, Mem. 1, 1, 9 al.; GDI p. 870, n49 A [Ephesus VI B.C.] 40 minas ἐστάθησαν; Is 46:6; Jer 39:9; 2 Esdr 8:25), and some (e.g. BWeiss, HHoltzmann, JWeiss; FSchulthess, ZNW 21, 1922, 227f; Field, Notes 19f) interpret Mt 26:15 in this sense. Of course Mt’s readers would know that coinage of their time was not ‘weighed out’ and would understand ἱ. in the sense of striking a bargain (ἵστημι=set a price, make an offer, close a bargain: Herodas 7, 68 pair of shoes; BGU 1116, 8 [I B.C.]; 912, 25 [I A.D.]; PRainer 206, 10 [II A.D.] κεφάλαιον), they set out (=offered, allowed) for him (=paid him) 30 silver coins (Wlh., OHoltzmann, Schniewind), but the more sophisticated among them would readily recognize the obsolete mng. Ac 7:60 is sometimes interpreted in a related sense, but the absence of a direct object of amount paid suggests that the pass. is better placed in 3 above.B. intr., aor. and fut. forms① to desist from movement and be in a stationary position, stand still, stop (Hom., Aristot.; Philostrat., Ep. 36, 2 ὁ ποταμὸς στήσεται; TestSol 7:3 οὕτως ἔστη ἡ αὔρα) Lk 24:17. στὰς ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐφώνησεν αὐτούς Mt 20:32.—Mk 10:49; Lk 7:14; 17:12; 18:40. στῆναι τὸ ἅρμα Ac 8:38. ἀπὸ μακρόθεν ἔστησαν Rv 18:17; cp. vs. 15. ἔστησαν ἐν τῷ τόπῳ τοῦ σπηλαίου GJs 19:2. ἔστη ἐπὶ τόπου πεδινοῦ he took his stand on a level place Lk 6:17.
