Как режиссер (в этом фильме нельзя сказать, что он не умеет двигать камеру) и как актер (чудесно играя двойную роль палача и жертвы) он достигает вершин своего таланта. Начав с отсылки к своим более ранним фильмам (к бурлескному обличению ужасов войны в На плечо!, Shoulder Arms) и закончив посланием, адресованным всему человечеству, Чаплин пытается освоить новую территорию для комедии и по-своему вмешаться в ход событий мировой истории.
