Porque el maíz en mis dulces encantadoras aldeinas, era todavía más importarte que el mismo pan de escanda. Con la rubia y fina harina de maíz, se hacían las papillas por la mañana y a la noche, que se comían con leche caliente que en el momento había sido ordeñada, y dejaban a las gentes hartas, eruptando de satisfechas, en el acaecer que sus vidas se deslizaban felices y contentas. —Con las fregaduras y restos que de las papillas que quedaban en los platos y demás recipientes, se hacían también buenas y nutritivas comidas para los cerdos. Las pequeñas mazorcas verdes y a medio granar, las echábamos en un rincón o cesto, y servían como nutritivo pienso para las vacas paridas, y hasta los mismos cerdos por ellas se alegraban.
