Дэйвз долго путешествовал с индейцами, изучал, подобно своему герою Тому Джеффордзу, их обычаи, религию, обряды и праздники. Вестерн по природе своей - исторический жанр: он может излагать ход истории, но переписывать ее не может. Глубокое желание межрасового единства, о котором свидетельствует этот фильм, был мечтой, укоренившейся в сердцах некоторых людей доброй воли. Но в реальности мечта так и осталась утопией, упущенной возможностью. В этом смысле фильм хорошо отражает 2 стороны таланта Дэйвза. Его творчество всегда основано на прилежном изучении исторических фактов, но в нем есть и мечтательность, необходимая для человека. Красота рождается у Дэйвза не только от созерцания настоящего, но и от созерцания возможного, как будто возможное - часть настоящего и воплотилось где-нибудь и когда-нибудь.Актерская игра в Сломанной стреле запоминается в особенности. У Фуллера правда времени прорывается из описания персонажей, которым выпало больше всего страданий в эту эпоху. И покой – ведь в итоге Полет стрелы, приводит героев к некоему покою – рождается из бескомпромиссного исследования крайностей. По мнению Фуллера, только знакомство с крайностями может способствовать зарождению будущего гуманизма. С точки зрения идеологии и сюжета фильм является важной вехой в истории модернистского вестерна. Его главный персонаж - индеец; более того, индеец, за которым автор наблюдает с симпатией и уважением. Энтони Мэнн (Дорога к Дьяволу, Devil's Doorway; 1950) и Делмер Дэйвз (Сломанная стрела, Broken Arrow) уже показывали схожих персонажей, однако здесь индеец обладает гораздо более ярко выраженным характером, выразительностью, психологической насыщенностью, нежели его предшественники. Главная мысль картины не лишена тонкости. Олдрич показывает абсолютного индивидуалиста, в котором ясное осознание происходящего смешивается с паранойей. Герой утверждает, что все индейцы и все белые - его враги и жить ему осталось недолго, что справедливо со всех точек зрения. Его подруга (благотворный, но недостаточно уравновешивающий фактор) помогает ему построить собственную, единоличную цивилизацию вдали от белых и индейцев. Олдрич умело дает прочувствовать лиричность и почти восторженный энтузиазм этой попытки, но вместе с тем - ее отчаянный и самоубийственный характер. Счастливый финал, естественно, не входил в намерения Олдрича: Масая должен был убить армейский разведчик-индеец, позарившийся на его жену. Продюсеры «United Artists» навязали другой финал, который сначала был отвергнут, а затем принят Бёртом Ланкастером, сопродюсером фильма. Этот финал настолько искусственен (по сути, от него остается ощущение незаконченности), что, в конечном счете, ничуть не смущает: зритель практически неизбежно дорисовывает в уме трагическую развязку - единственно возможный исход затеи Масая. Как и позднее, в Полёте стрелы, Run of the Arrow, здесь главным героем вестерна становится изгой, попавший в безвыходную ситуацию, которая поэтично и трагически подводит итог историческим конфликтам эпохи. -
