    Etymology: Technical term for mining and as such suspect to be a loan. The attempt to explain μέταλλον from μεταλλάω as backformation (Eichhorn, De graecae linguae nominibus deriv. retrogr. conformatis. Diss. Göttingen 1912, S. 47 f.; rejected by Kretschmer Glotta 6, 299, but accepted by id. Glotta 32, 1 n. 1), does not help, as for the verb no convincing etymology has been found; the explanation from μετ' ἄλλα, prop. "(inquire) after other (things)", e.g. Buttmann Lexilogus 1, 139 f. (with Eust.), Kretschmer l.c., is hardly convincing. Much more probable is, to see in the denominative μεταλλάω an orig. tecnical term, which was by ep. poets used in metaph. sense, but further came out of use. -- For foreign origin a. o.     Etymology: Apart from the perf. ὄδωδα all verbal forms are innovations based on the pres. ὄζω. The derivations too are based largely on th present. On its own are however ὀδωδή (derived from the perfect?), but also the in Greek isolated ὀδμή and - ώδης. Both can be old, if ὀδμή agrees with Alb. amë `unpleasant smell' (IE * od-mā), - ώδης represents the s-stem of Lat. odor, OLat. odōs, prob. seen also in Arm. hot, gen. -oy (h- second.) `smell, odour', IE * odos-, either with compositional lengthening or with old lengthened grade (IE * ōdos-; cf. Lith. úodžiu below) as in Arm. -ut (e.g. hr-ut = πυρώδης from hur = πῦρ) beside -ot (e.g. bor-ot `w. florescence'). However ὀσμή not with Brugmann Grundr.2 II: 1, 251 a.o. from *ὀδ-σ-μά̄ but purely phonetically from ὀδ-μά̄, s. Schwyzer 208; cf. also ὀσφραίνομαι. -- Both IE * od-mā and * odos- presuppose a primary rootpresent, which is retained in themat. form in Lat. ol-ō, ol-ĕre (with l for d); beside it the more usual innovation ol-e-ō, - ēre (after the intransitives). The yot-pressent ὄζω differs only in the vowellength from Balt., e.g. Lith. úodžiu `smell'; we now know that the Baltic form has a long vowel because of Winter's Law (lengthening before voiced consonant). Arm. hot-im `smell' is a denominative of hot (s. above). The basic λ-stem can be in the same relation to the σ-stem in σπέος as e.g. νεφ-έλη to νέφ-ος. Further unclear; quite doubtful hypotheses w. lit. in Bq s. v., WP. 2, 680, W.-Hofmann s. spīrō. -- Lat. LW [loanword] spēlaeum and spēlunca (s. W.-Hofmann s.v. and Rohlfs ByzZ 37, 60f.); Alb. LW [loanword] shpellë `rock, cave' (Pisani Jb. f. kleinas. Forsch. 3, 152). - Furnée 123 reconstructs a *σπῆλυξ. -ῡκος from Lat. *spēlūca. He further adduces πῆλυξ = ῥαγάς (H., Phot.). He also reminds of Etr. śpel(a) `cave, tomb`. The word is no doubt Pre-Greek (note the prenasalization and the suffix - υγγ-).
