Supp. 826 f.; text defect), πόρτις `calf'; quite uncertain the PN Σίντιες (Lemnos; σίνομαι?, s. Fraenkel Nom. ag. 1, 76). It lies at hand, to take it like φάτις as an original abstract fem. (Brugmann; e.g. 4239); on the question Holt Les noms d'action en - σις 40f., G. Liebert Das Nominalsuffix -ti- im Aind. (Lund 1949) 142ff. After Benveniste Origines 83 we should rather reconstruct an old neuter *τὸ μάντι `divination'; but μαντι-πόλος, adduced by B., can easily be explained differently, s. above. In nay case μάντις belongs to μαίνομαι, μανῆναι ( ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ μαίνεται Hdt. 4, 79; rejected by v. Wilamowitz Glaube 1, 40); semantically agrees the formally cognate but differently built Skt. múni- m. `illuminated, seer' (rejected by Mayrhofer KEWA 2, 654); in the West there is a different word for it (Lat. vātēs etc.; Porzig Gliederung 127). Austin Lang. 17, 87.     Etymology: The expression Α῝ρπυιαι ἀνηρέψαντο (ξ 371 = α 241) suggests connection with ἐρέπτομαι `feed on (raufen, abrupfen, fressen)' (q. v.), but this is impossible because of the ἐ-, and because of its meaning, `feed on'. - Perfect forms without reduplication do not exist. - υια is typical for substr. words, cf. ἄγυια, αἴθυια etc. The variation with\/without ε is also a substr. characteristic. Therefore the name is a substr. element; cf. Εἰλείθυια S. Szemerényi, Syncope 203 - 213 and Beekes, FS Watkins1998, 24f. The spiritus may have been taken from ἅπάζω.). Fur. 327f connects the name with ἄρπυς `love', for which I see no reason.

    γέ (Hom.+; apolog. exc. Ar.) enclit. particle, appended to the word or words it refers to; as in Hom.+ it serves to “focus the attention upon a single idea, and place it, as it were, in the limelight: differing thus from δή, which emphasizes the reality of a concept (though in certain respects the usages of the two particles are similar)” (Denniston 114). In oral utterance it would be accompanied by a change in pitch of voice at certain points in the context, and a translator may use an adverb or indicate the point through word order, choice of typeface, or punctuation at least, even, indeed, etc.
