    II with SUBJ., εἰ is regularly joined with ἄν ([dialect] Ep. κε, κεν), cf. ἐάν: Arc. εἰκαν in Tegean Inscrr. of iv B. C. (IG5(2).3.16, 31, 6.2, SIG306.34) should be understood as εἰκ ἄν (εἰ: εἰκ = οὐ: οὐκ), since εἰ δ' ἄν is also found in IG5(2).3.2, 6.45, and εἰκ alone, ib.3.21; but ἄν ([etym.] κε, κεν) are freq. absent in Hom. as Od.5.221, 14.373 (and cf. infr. 2), and Lyr., Pi. (who never uses εἰ with ἄν or κε ([etym.] ν)) P.4.266, al.; in dialects,

    Etymology: Mostly connected with λέχος, from *λέχσκᾱ. As Greek has no nomin. suffix - sk-, and as a k-suffix from the zero grade *λεχσ- is also improbable, one assumes a σκ-present *λέχ-σκ-εται (\> *λέσχεται); but there is no trace of this verb. The same formation was assumed for OHG. lëscan ' löschen' (as `lie down'); also for Celtic, e. g. OIr. lesc `lazy', where it is quite uncertain. - As the room was not for lying down, this etymology (supposing *λεσχεται really existed) is improbable. - Long ago the agreement with Hebr. liškāh was observed. This cannot be ignored. It was assumed that Greek had the word from the Near East (West, East Face 38; not the other way round, ib.), but as the word is isolated in NWSemitic, Schrader (FS Jahrh.feier Univ. Breslau, 1911, 469) already assumed that both languages had it from Anatolia, which seems the most probable interpretation. Thus Fur. 295, 257, who points out that the suffix of λεσχάραι is non-Greek; he also points to the Hebr. variant niškāh, which may point to Anat. l\/n, as in Fur. 388. Thus now Bremmer, WAAR?

As ὀ- originally was not part of a diphthong, Brugmann IF 29, 231 (with criticism of earlier views) sees in ὀ-ϊσ-τός a prefixed verbal adj. to Skt. iṣ-yati `bring in quick movement'; prop. meaning "rushing on, flying towards" (or "uged on, sent off"?), with nearest formal connection to ὀΐομαι (s.v.); also ἰός `arrow' would be cognate. -- Older attempts also in Bq (all rightly rejected); cf. also Kretschmer Glotta 4, 351 (against Sadée KZ 43, 245ff.). - I think that Chantraine is correct in supposing that it is a Pre-Greek word (not in Furnée).

O. with Debrunner IF 21, 206) is therefore not necessary. Also ὀλοφυδνός may have been innovated, e.g. after ἀλαπαδνός, σμερδνός a.o. (cf. Chantraine Form. 194, Risch 90f.); cf further γοεδνός (beside γοερός, s. γοάω). Thus *ὀλοφύς after ὀϊζύς? -- Because of Arm. oɫb, gen. -oy `lament' (with Lith. ulbúoti `call, sing') one might asssume an orig. *ὄλφος (= Arm. oɫb), *ὀλφύς, which would have got its inner ο from the synonymous ὀλολύζω (s. v. w. lit.).
