4 μολεύω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `cut off and transplant the suckers or shoots of trees' (Lex. Att. ap. Poll. 7, 146); μολούειν ἐγκόπτειν τὰς παραφυάδας H.Origin: IE [Indo-European]X [probably] [721] * mel-\/ mol-? `come up, appear'. Or PGX [probably a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Prob. from *μόλος or *μολεύς `runner', to μολεῖν `go, come, run', s. βλώσκω; μολούειν after κολούειν, cf. H. Petersson Et. Miszellen 18. Here also μόλουρος m. `kind of snake', μολουρίς, - ίδος f. `locust' (Nic.)? I wonder whether the variation is a fact of Greek, and not rather a Pre-Greek phenomenon. (I do not believe with Fur. 388 in a variation μολούω\/ κολούω.)Page in Frisk: 2,250Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μολεύω

9 βλαστάνω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `but, sprout, grow' (A.),Other forms: Aor. βλαστεῖν, intr. fut. βλαστήσω (Thphr.), aor. trans. ἐβλάστησα (Emp.), perf. βεβλάστηκα (Hp.), ἐβλάστηκα (E.); recent βλαστέω, βλαστάω.Derivatives: βλάστημα `offdhoot' (A.), βλαστικός (Thphr.); deverb. βλαστός `id.' (Hdt.), βλάστη `origin' (S.). from where βλαστέω (Thphr.).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: The aorist βλαστεῖν is the basis of all forms. Its analysis is uncertain; perhaps *βλαθ-τεῖν ( βλαδ-, βλατ-). Connection with βλωθρός `tall' (q. v.) is impossible if the words are IE (*ml̥dh-, *mlōdh-: ablaut ō is impossible in an adj.); same for μολεύω `cut off (and transplant) the shoots of trees' (q. v. and βλώσκω). From other languages one mentions OHG. blat etc.`leaf' (but this is rather non-IE).Page in Frisk: 1,241Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > βλαστάνω

10 βλώσκω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `go, come' (Il.).Other forms: Aor. μολεῖν, ἔβλω ἐφάνη, ὤχετο, ἔστη; fut. μολοῦμαι ( βλῶξαι, βλώξω Lyc.), perf. μέμβλωκα ( βέβλωκε ἠρεμεῖ, φύεται H.)Compounds: κατα-, προ-, ἐκ- etc. αὑτόμολος `deserter' (Hdt.); ἀγχίμολον ( ἦλθε, Il.), old absolutive Wackernagel, Mus. Helv. 1, 226ff.; ἀγχιβλώς ἄρτι παρών H.Etymology: Pres. βλώσκω \< *μλώ-σκω (cf. μολ-εῖν, μέ-μβλω-κα) from *ml̥h₃-sk- is clear. The aor. stem βλω- will have the same origin, with the zero grade from the plural. The nominal forms with - μολ- will have o-grade, * molh₃-. The aor. stem μολ-ε\/ο- is explained from metathesis in *μελο-μ, -ς, -τ \< * melh₃-. Harðarson, Wurzelaorist 169f, 224f, also assumes stressed l̥h₃ \> ολο, which is doubtful; the existence of a development μλω- (in ἔβλω) beside μολο- is improbable. I would expect *l̥h₃ \> αλ, which was replaced by ολ after the predominant o-vocalism. The metathesis is not an independent phonetic development, but part of this process of morphological reorganisation. - Outside Greek perhaps in Slavic, e.g. Serb. iz-mòlīti *`let come out', i.e. `show', Slov. molíti `hinstrecken, hinhalten'. - Uncertain Toch. A mlosk-, mlusk- `escape' (B mlutk ?). - Connection with μέλλω is phonetically improbable (because of the laryngeal), with μολεύω `cut off and transplant the shoots of trees' is semantically impossible.Page in Frisk: 1,246-247Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > βλώσκω

11 μολοβρός
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: scornful or ignominious qualification, by the goat-herd Melanthos and the beggar Iros referred to the unknown Odysseus (ρ 219, σ 26; after this Lyc. 775); also of the head ( κεφαλή) of a plant in unknown meaning (Nic. Th. 662).Derivatives: μολόβρ-ιον n. `the young of a swine' (Ael.), - ίτης ὗς `ds.' (Hippon.). -- PN Μόλοβρος m. (Th. 4, 8, 9; Lacon.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Popular word, because of the uncertain meaning hard to assess. Several proposals of doubtful value from old and new times: ἀπὸ τοῦ μολεῖν καὶ παραγίνεσθαι πρὸς βορὰν καὶ τροφήν (sch. Lyc. 775); from μέλας, μολύνω and τὰ ὄβρια, ὀβρίκαλα `the young of animals' (Curtius 370); to βλιβρόν λαγρόν H. and βλάβη (Fick BB 28, 97; agreeing Bechtel Lex. s.v. and Hist. Personennamen 502); from *μολός `runner, shoot' (cf. μολεύω) and βορά (Grošelj Živa Ant. 2, 212f.); s. also Reynen Herm. 85, 142 w. n. 2. - Neumann HS 105(1992) 75-80 derives it form *μολος, Skt. málam `dirt' (from * melo- or * molHo-) and the root * gʷrh₃- `eat' in βιβρώσκω; but -*gʷr̥Ho- would have given *-βαρο-. Rather a Pre-Greek word.Page in Frisk: 2,250-251Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μολοβρός

12 μῶλυς
μῶλυς, - υοςGrammatical information: adj.Meaning: `enervated (also mentally); dull, feeble, weak' (S. Fr. 963. Nic., Demetr. Lac.);Other forms: also μῶλυξ (cod. - δ-; cf. v. Blumenthal Hesychst. 42f.) ἀπαίδευτος, μώλυκα τὸν ἀπαίδευτον. Ζακύνθιοι H.; μωλυρόν νωθρόν, βραδύ H.Derivatives: μωλύω, - ύνω, - ύνομαι, aor. pass. μωλυ(ν)θῆναι, perf. med. μεμώλυσμαι, rarely with ἀπο-, κατα-, δια, `boil imperfectly, scald, simmer', med.-pass. `become powerless, fade away', esp. of wounds `fail to come to a head' (Hp., Arist.); μωλύεται γηράσκει, μεμωλυσμένη παρειμένη H. With the verbal nouns μώλ-υσις (- υνσις) f. `spoil' (opposite ἕψησις; Arist., Thphr.), - υτης ἐπέων meaning uncertain (Timo).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: With μωλύω (to which μωλύ-ν-ω; cf. Schwyzer 728) cf. κωλύω; the much more rare μῶλυς may be a backformation. With a velar μῶλυξ like κόρυξ νεανίσκος H. (s. κόρη); μωλυ-ρός like ἐχυρός, καπυρός a.o. (hardly with Benveniste Origines 36 to μωλύνω with ρ: ν -change), if not dissimilated from - υλός (cf. Leumann Glotta 32, 223 A. 2 = Kl. Schr. 249 n. 3). -- Because of the not very clear meaning and the unclear formation etymologically hard to asses. By Fick 23, 189, Bq a.o. connected with μέλεος (acc. to Bechtel Lex, 224f. and Specht KZ 59, 93 also ἀμβλύς); rejected by WP. 2, 285. After Prellwitz BB 26, 310 (accepted by WP. 2, 301 and Pok. 746) however to μῶλος. Diff. again H. Petersson Et. Miszellen 18: μωλύω to μολούω (s. μολεύω) as κωλύω to κολούω. -- Everything hypothetic. - The suffix - υκ- looks Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 2,Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μῶλυς
