1910-1999Nacido en Nueva York, escribio ensayos, guiones de radio y un par de novelas antes de empezar su carrera en Hollywood. Hijo de un farmaceutico judio de origen ruso de ideas izquierdistas, estudio Leyes en la Universidad de Columbia. En 1937 decide ganarse la vida como escritor. Despues de publicar su segunda novela fue contratado por la Paramount. Escribe el guion de En las rayas de la mano (Golden Earrings, Mitchell Leisen, 1947). Las manipulaciones que sufre su guion le hacen abandonar la Para mount. Es el guionista de Cuerpo y alma (Body and Soul, Robert Rossen, 1948) y el guionista y director de Force of Evil (1948).Uno de los mayores damnificados del celebre y triste Comite de Actividades Antinorteamericanas de McCarthy y Nixon fue precisamente Abraham Polonsky, cuya prometedora ca rrera se vio limitada a otros dos largometrajes; el siguiente, es decir, el segundo que dirigio, es un western muy singular en el que se predica la igualdad racial y en el que, al mismo tiempo, se lamenta la ausencia de igualdad de los distintos estamentos de la sociedad norteamericana de la epoca de la frontera, en clara metafora de una situacion en la que el propio realizador se vio sumido, y de la que resulto represaliado.
