TRADUCCIÓN.—Pero volviendo coger la invernada donde antes la deje sin terminar, para alumbrar estos hechos, que a mí me han dejado marcada y deshecha mi existencia, lo mismo que a todos los huérfanos de las izquierdas. Digo que aquel invierno cubrió la nieve casi con dos metros de espesor, todas las aldeas de mi Tierrina, y como el verano y el otoño hubieran venido muy secos, pues estaban las desvanes, paneras y pajares casi vacíos de viandas y hierba, así era que las vacas mugían atadas en las cuadras de hambre, lo mismo que los pequeños en las casas lloraban por el mismo menester. En algunos hogares más necesitados, sus moradores mataban a las vacas para comérselas antes de que el hambre terminara con todos. En otros que tenían más viandas, y en su pajar no había nada de hierba, les daban a las vacas maíz, patatas, castañas, etc., y hasta las mismas hojas que mullían sus gergones.
