Christian Duverger, L'origine des Aztèques p.98. 'L'axayacatl (Cf. 'âxaxayacatl') est une espèce de mouche palustre du lac de Mexico. Des innombrables petits oeufs que pondent ces mouches dans les zones du lac envahies par les roseaux se forment de grandes croûtes que rapportent les pêcheurs à certains moments pour les vendre sur le marché. Ces oeufs que l'on appelle ahuautli, les Mexicains les mangeaient depuis toujours et aujourd'hui (milieu du XVIIIème s.) c'est un plat commun sur la table des Espagnols. Ils ont à peu près la même saveur que les oeufs de poisson.
