Когда-то пилот был единоличным правителем на борту своей машины – как до, так и во время полета. Затем техника настолько усложнилась, что пилоту стало дозволено лишь издалека наблюдать за ее подготовкой, а после отрыва от земли он оказался лишен всякой свободы действий и права на собственную инициативу. Космические экспедиции при вынужденной пассивности участников стали походить на миссии камикадзэ. Эта двойственность обогащает фильм, ничуть не вредя его цельности. Она в некоторой степени отпугнула широкую публику, которую все больше притягивают монолитные произведения, лишенные каких бы то ни было тонкостей смысла. И Парни что надо – фильм, который был достоин всемирного признания, – не был вознагражден тем успехом, на который мог рассчитывать.Классическая, взвешенная, ясная, спокойная режиссура Кауфмена избегает фальшивого лоска и туманности. Она продолжает традиции великих классиков американского кино, в особенности Хоукса, сохраняя при этом все самое драгоценное (критическое отношение, своеобразную скрытую усмешку), что есть в творчестве, напр., таких авторов, как Роберт Олтман. С точки зрения актерской игры фильм особенно блистателен. Кауфмен собрал для своей картины ряд наиболее одаренных актеров современного американского кино. Во главе их – великолепный Сэм Шепард, Гэри Купер наших дней. Если к драматургическому творчеству Сэма Шепарда (театральные пьесы и киносценарии) позволено относиться сдержанно, то его актерский талант очевиден; остается только надеяться, что он будет гармонично развиваться в будущем.
