The major incentive for turning a territorial dispute into a war was the rich deposits of nitrates (then a vital raw material for the production of fertilizers and explosives) in the Atacama Desert. By acquiring the Atacama, Chile also deprived Bolivia of its only access to the sea at the port of Antofagasta, with inevitably damaging consequences for the future economic and commercial development of the country. Bolivia's desire for a salida al mar (“outlet to the sea”) led it to seek alternative access to the Atlantic, and this was partly behind the outbreak of the horrific Chaco War with Paraguay (1932-1935), though the interest of foreign oil companies in possible oil deposits in the Chaco region was at least as important a factor. Today, Bolivia has adopted the peaceful road of negotiations with Chile to resolve the problem.* * *f2 TRANSP departuretomar la salida start;dar la salida give the starting signal o the off4 COM:tiene salida there’s a market for it;salida a bolsa flotation5 figopportunity, opening;salida profesional career opportunity* * *salida nf1) : exitsalida de emergencia: emergency exit2) : leaving, departure3) solución: way out, solution4) : start (of a race)5) ocurrencia: wisecrack, joke6)salida del sol : sunrise* * *salida n1. [अर्थस्य अनुक्तार्थस्य आपत्तिः सिद्धिः]1 an inference from circumstances, presumption, im- plication, one of the five sources of knowledge or modes of proof, according to the Mīmāṁsakas. It is 'deduc- tion of a matter from that which could not else be'; it is 'assumption of a thing, not itself perceived but necessarily implied by another which is seen, heard, or proved'; it is an inference used to account for an apparent inconsistency; as in the familiar instance पीनो देवदत्तो दिवा न भुङ्क्ते the apparent inconsistency between 'fatness' and 'not eating by day' is accounted for by the inference of his 'eating by night'. पीनत्वविशि- ष्टस्य देवदत्तस्य रात्रिभोजित्वरूपार्थस्य शब्दानुक्तस्यापि आपत्तिः. It is defined by Śabara as दृष्टः श्रुतो वार्थो$न्यथा नोपपद्यते इत्यर्थ- कल्पना । यथा जीवति देवदत्ते गृहाभावदर्शनेन बहिर्भावस्यादृष्टस्य कल्पना ॥ Ms.1.1.5. It may be seen from the words दृष्टः and श्रुतः in the above definition, that Śabara has sug- gested two varieties of अर्थापत्ति viz. दृष्टार्थापत्ति and श्रुता- र्थापत्ति. The illustration given by him, however, is of दृष्टार्थापत्ति only. The former i. e. दृष्टार्थापत्ति consists in the presumption of some अदृष्ट अर्थ to account for some दृष्ट अर्थ (or अर्थs) which otherwise becomes inexplicable. The latter, on the other hand, consists in the presump- tion of some अर्थ through अश्रुत शब्द to account for some श्रुत अर्थ (i. e. some statement). This peculiarity of श्रुतार्थापत्ति is clearly stated in the following couplet; यत्र त्वपरिपूर्णस्य वाक्यस्यान्वयसिद्धये । शब्दो$ध्याह्रियते तत्र श्रुतार्थापत्ति- रिष्यते ॥ Mānameyodaya p.129 (ed. by K. Raja, Adyar, 1933). Strictly speaking it is no separate mode of proof; it is only a case of अनुमान and can be proved by a व्यतिरेकव्याप्ति; cf. Tarka. K.17 and S. 57 μυχός
Grammatical information: m. (pl. -ά Call. Del. 142; Schwyzer 581.)Meaning: `the innermost place, the inmost, corner, hiding-place, store-room' (Il.; on the meaning in Homer Wace JHSt. 71, 203ff.).Other forms: On μοχοι- s. below.Compounds: Compp., e.g. ἑπτά-μυχος `with seven hiding-places' (Call.).Derivatives: 1. μύχιος `innermost' (poet. Hes. Op. 523, late prose); several superlatives, all from μυχός: μυχοίτατος (φ 146), from the loc. - μυχοῖ in μοχοῖ ἐντός. Πάφιοι H.; μυχαίτατος (Arist.; - τερος Hdn. Epim.), after μεσαί-τατος, - τερος a.o.; μύχατος (A. R., Call.), after ἔσχατος etc.; μυχέστατος (Phot.). -- 2. μύχ-αλος = - ατος (trag. anon.; Τάρταρα; also E. Hel. 189?), cf. μυχάλμη βυθὸς θαλάσσης Phot. (: ἅλμη), βύσσαλοι βόθροι H. (s.s.v. βυθος, Fur. 254). -- 3. μυχώδης `full of corners' (E.). -- 4. μυχάς f. = μυχός ( Lyr. Adesp. Oxy. 15 II 4). -- 5. μυχόομαι `be hidden in a corner' (sch.).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Without direct agreement outside Greek. As supposed verbal noun, prop. *"slipping, putting in, hiding" (\> `hiding place'), μυχός can be connected partly with Arm. mxem `put in, immerse', IE ( s)mukh-, partly with a Germ. group, e.g. OWNo. smjúga `slip in, through' (with smuga f. `small opening, hidingplace'), MHG smiegen ' schmiegen', if from IE * smeugh-; the Germ. words, however, can also go back on * smeuk and agree then as regards the velar with OCS smykati sę `drag on, cooper', Lith. smùkti `glide (away)' etc.; the variation k: kh: gh can partly be due to phonetic developments (assimilation of consonants), partly to mixing with related forms. -- Further combinations, which with a wordfamily of this meaning, are easily lost endlessly, in WP. 2, 254f., Pok. 744f., Fraenkel s. smùkti, also Vasmer s. smýkatь; everywhere with further forms. -- On μύσχον τὸ ἀνδρεῖον καὶ γυναικεῖον μόριον H., by Fick KZ 43, 149 (s. also Bechtel Dial. 3, 317) connected through *μύχ-σκον, cf. on 2. μόσχος. - Fur. 364 thinks the word is Pre-Greek, but without further arguments.Page in Frisk: 2,Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μυχός
