Филипп III не на шутку увлечен прекрасной Изабеллой, на которой дону Карлосу пришлось жениться в тюрьме. Едкость выражается особенно ярко в портрете кардинала: главарь заговорщиков расхваливает его достоинства как литератора, чтобы убедить кардинала заманить короля в замок, где уже готовится западня. Ради этого злодей-заговорщик организует в замке представление не какого-нибудь непристойного фарса из тех, что внушают ненависть прелату, а нравоучительной трагедии его же авторства «Искушение христианской души», феноменально тоскливого произведения, которое никто и нигде не хотел ставить на сцене. По ходу сюжета самые высокопоставленные персонажи (король, кардинал) показываются зрителю как самые недальновидные и легкомысленные люди. Если бы не подпольная деятельность главного героя и его сообщников-разбойников, эти персонажи шагнули бы прямиком в пропасть. Наконец, фильм многое выигрывает благодаря весьма оригинальной музыке Франко Манино, исполненной на гитаре и тамбурине. Наряду с Великолепным авантюристом, II magnifico awenturiero, 1964, ироничным и роскошным портретом Бенвенуто Челлини, Семь шпаг мстителя на сегодняшний день представляют собой завещание Фреды в жанре приключенческого костюмного фильма.N.В.
