Objekt des Hauptsatzes in derselben Form, in der es selbst steht, zu sich nimmt, quam quisque norit artem, in hac se exerceat, Cic.: quas res violentissimas natura genuit, earum moderationem nos soli habemus, Cic. – b) daß qui ein substantivisches Attribut des Subjektes od. Objektes des Hauptsatzes zu sich nimmt, Philippus Aetolos desertos ab Romanis, cui uni fidebant auxilio, subegit, Liv.:————Cumae, quam Graeci tum urbem tenebant, capiuntur, Liv. – Häufig wird ein solcher mit esse gebildeter Relativsatz, in dem das relat. Pron. mit dem Substantiv im Nominativ ober im Ablativ steht, in einem Hauptsatz eingeschaltet, um den Grund zu der in seinem Prädikat ausgesprochenen Eigenschaft anzugeben, spero, quae tua prudentia et temperantia est, te valere, daß du bei od. infolge deiner Klugheit u. Mäßigkeit dich wohl befindest, Cic.: quā prudentiā es, nihil te fugiet, bei deiner Klugheit wird dir nichts entgehen, Cic. – c) daß qui ein adjekt. Attribut des Subjektes od. Objektes des Hauptsatzes zu sich nimmt, ad suas res revocet, quas aut tulerit acerbas aut timeat, Cic.: eam civitatem, in qua ipse florentissima multum omnibus gloriā praestitisset, Cic. – d) daß qui mit seinem Verbum durch Verschränkung mit einem Nebensatz verbunden wird, u. zwar: α) so, daß es von dem Nebensatze abhängig ist. Dies ist der Fall, αα) wenn es mit einem Partizip zusammensteht, non sunt ea bona dicenda nee habenda, quibus abundantem licet esse miserrimum, bei denen man trotz ihres Übermaßes höchst unglücklich sein kann, Cic.: nullas consequuntur voluptates, quarum potiendi spe inflammati multos labores susceperant, zu deren Erreichung sie sich Hoffnung machten u. deshalb viele Anstrengungen übernommen hatten, Cic.: se auctores habuisse sceleris illius eos viros, quibus e ci-————vitate sublatis civitas stare non posset, nach deren Entfernung usw., Cic. – ββ) wenn es mit dem Verbum einen abhängigen Relativsatz oder Fragesatz bildet oder in der Konstruktion des Acc. u. Dies ist der Fall, α) wenn es sich nach dessen Begriffe, nicht nach der grammatischen Form richtet, illa furia (sc. Clodius), qui etc., Cic. – β) wenn es sich nach dem Prädikatsnomen des Relativsatzes oder des Hauptsatzes richtet, patres C. Mucio agrum dono dedere, quae postea sunt Mucia prata appellata, Liv.: Helvetii continentur flumine Rheno latissimo atque altissimo, qui agrum Helvetium a Germanis dividit, Caes. – γ) wenn es mehr auf den allgemein gefaßten Begriff des vorhergehenden Wortes als auf dessen konkrete Bedeutung hinweist, testarum suffragia, quod illi ostracismum vocant, Nep.: quae utilitates ex rebus iis, quae sunt inanima, percipiantur, Cic. – dah. steht es auch im Neutr., wenn auf den Inhalt des ganzen Satzes hingewiesen wird, Lacedaemonii Agin regem, quod numquam antea apud eos accĭderat, necaverunt, Cic.: obsides, quod nulli antea, Persae ei dederunt, Eutr.: meist mit dem demonstr. id, wie: Timoleon, id quod difficilius putatur, multo sapientius tulit secundam quam adversam fortunam, Nep. – b) wenn qui in einem anderen Numerus steht, als das vorhergehende Substantiv erwarten läßt. Dies ist der Fall, α) wenn es nach einem Kollektivbegriff im Plural steht, Caesar equitatum omnem praemittit, qui videant,————Caes.: bes. in der Wendung ex eo numero qui, zB. unus ex eo numero, qui ad caedem parati erant, Sall. – β) wenn der relative Satz allgemeiner gefaßt wird als der Hauptsatz, si tempus est ullum iure hominis necandi, quae multa sunt, Cic. – Dies ist bes. der Fall, wenn das relat. Pron. auf ein demonstr. im Neutr. sich bezieht, Caesar pollicetur, ut, quod quisque eorum in bello amiserit, quae sint penes milites suos, iis, qui amiserint, restituatur, Caes. – Auffälliger ist der Sing. nach einem Substant. im Plur., wie Sall. Cat. 56, 5. – c) wenn qui in einem anderen Kasus steht, als das Verbum des relat. Satzes erwarten läßt. Dies ist der Fall, α) wenn es durch Attraktion den Kasus des vorhergegangenen Substant. annimmt, nos hoc confirmamus illo augurio, quo diximus, Cic.: in iis coloribus, quibus modo dixisti, denominandis, Gell. – Dies geschieht am häufigsten, wenn zu dem relat. Satze ein Verbum aus dem Hauptsatze ergänzt werden muß, quibus poterat sauciis ductis secum, Liv.: cum aliquid agas eorum, quorum consuesti, gaudeo, Cic. – β) wenn es bei Verbindung mehrerer relativen Satzglieder in dem zweiten in einem anderen Kasus hinzu ergänzt werden muß, als es im ersten steht, huius tyranni quem armis oppressa pertulit civitas paretque cum maxime mortuo, interitus declarat, Cic.————den relat. Numerus nach dem Worte, auf das es bezogen wird, rücksichtlich des Kasus nach dem zu ihm gehörigen Verbum, mors terribilis est iis, quorum cum vita omnia exstinguuntur, Cic.: luna eam lucem, quam a sole accipit, mittit in terras, Cic. – Häufig wird das Substant., auf das es sich bezieht, wiederholt, itinera duo, quibus itineribus, Caes. – Wenn es sich auf ein demonstr. Pron. bezieht, so steht dieses häufig nach, quod virtute effici debet, id tentatur pecuniā, Cic.: a quo plurimum sperant, ei potissimum inserviunt, Cic.: oder es wird gänzlich weggelassen, qui mentiri solet, peierare consuevit, Cic. – bes. beim Neutr. quod, wodurch es in die prägn. Objekt des Hauptsatzes in derselben Form, in der es selbst steht, zu sich nimmt, quam quisque norit artem, in hac se exerceat, Cic.: quas res violentissimas natura genuit, earum moderationem nos soli habemus, Cic. – b) daß qui ein substantivisches Attribut des Subjektes od. Objektes des Hauptsatzes zu sich nimmt, Philippus Aetolos desertos ab Romanis, cui uni fidebant auxilio, subegit, Liv.: Cumae, quam Graeci tum urbem tenebant, capiuntur, Liv. – Häufig wird ein solcher mit esse gebildeter Relativsatz, in dem das relat. Pron. mit dem Substantiv im Nominativ ober im Ablativ steht, in einem Hauptsatz eingeschaltet, um den Grund zu der in seinem Prädikat ausgesprochenen Eigenschaft anzugeben, spero, quae tua prudentia et temperantia est, te valere, daß du bei od. infolge deiner Klugheit u. Mäßigkeit dich wohl befindest, Cic.: quā prudentiā es, nihil te fugiet, bei deiner Klugheit wird dir nichts entgehen, Cic. – c) daß qui ein adjekt. Attribut des Subjektes od. Objektes des Hauptsatzes zu sich nimmt, ad suas res revocet, quas aut tulerit acerbas aut timeat, Cic.: eam civitatem, in qua ipse florentissima multum omnibus gloriā praestitisset, Cic. – d) daß qui mit seinem Verbum durch Verschränkung mit einem Nebensatz verbunden wird, u. zwar: α) so, daß es von dem Nebensatze abhängig ist. Dies ist der Fall, αα) wenn es mit einem Partizip zusammensteht, non sunt ea bona dicenda nee habenda, quibus abundantem licet esse miserrimum, bei denen man trotz ihres Übermaßes höchst unglücklich sein kann, Cic.: nullas consequuntur voluptates, quarum potiendi spe inflammati multos labores susceperant, zu deren Erreichung sie sich Hoffnung machten u. deshalb viele Anstrengungen übernommen hatten, Cic.: se auctores habuisse sceleris illius eos viros, quibus e civitate sublatis civitas stare non posset, nach deren Entfernung usw., Cic. – ββ) wenn es mit dem Verbum einen abhängigen Relativsatz oder Fragesatz bildet oder in der Konstruktion des Acc. u. Infin. steht, sunt certa vitia, quae nemo est quin effugere cupiat, denen jedermann entgehen möchte, Cic.: cum dubium est, an merito accusetur, qui an omnino accusetur, incertum est, von dem ungewiß ist, ob er usw., Plin. ep. – β) so, daß es den Nebensatz in sich aufnimmt. In diesem Falle richtet sich die Form des relat. Pronomens nach dem Nebensatz, aberat omnis dolor, qui si adesset, nemo molliter ferret, den, wenn er sich einstellte, niemand leicht ertragen würde, Cic.: non Alpes aliae sunt, quas dum superant, comparare nova possint praesidia, während deren Übersteigung sie sich usw., Liv. – e) daß qui zu Anfang eines neuen Satzes steht, α) kopulativ = und dieser, res loquitur ipsa; quae semper valet plurimum, Cic. – β) adversativ = aber dieser, obsistere ei conati sunt Athenienses et Boeotii ceterique eorum socii apud Coroneam; quos omnes gravi proelio vicit, Nep. – γ) kausal = denn dieser, virtus est una altissimis defixa radicibus; quae numquam ullā vi labefactari potest, Cic. – δ) konsekutiv = daher dieser, hoc spectant leges, hoc volunt, incolumem esse civium coniunctionem; quam qui dirimunt, eos morte, exsilio, vinclis, damno coërcent, Cic.
Als Unregelmäßigkeit ist zu beachten: a) wenn qui in einem anderen Genus steht, als das vorausgehende Substant. erwarten läßt. Dies ist der Fall, α) wenn es sich nach dessen Begriffe, nicht nach der grammatischen Form richtet, illa furia (sc. Clodius), qui etc., Cic. – β) wenn es sich nach dem Prädikatsnomen des Relativsatzes oder des Hauptsatzes richtet, patres C. Mucio agrum dono dedere, quae postea sunt Mucia prata appellata, Liv.: Helvetii continentur flumine Rheno latissimo atque altissimo, qui agrum Helvetium a Germanis dividit, Caes. – γ) wenn es mehr auf den allgemein gefaßten Begriff des vorhergehenden Wortes als auf dessen konkrete Bedeutung hinweist, testarum suffragia, quod illi ostracismum vocant, Nep.: quae utilitates ex rebus iis, quae sunt inanima, percipiantur, Cic. – dah. steht es auch im Neutr., wenn auf den Inhalt des ganzen Satzes hingewiesen wird, Lacedaemonii Agin regem, quod numquam antea apud eos accĭderat, necaverunt, Cic.: obsides, quod nulli antea, Persae ei dederunt, Eutr.: meist mit dem demonstr. id, wie: Timoleon, id quod difficilius putatur, multo sapientius tulit secundam quam adversam fortunam, Nep. – b) wenn qui in einem anderen Numerus steht, als das vorhergehende Substantiv erwarten läßt. Dies ist der Fall, α) wenn es nach einem Kollektivbegriff im Plural steht, Caesar equitatum omnem praemittit, qui videant, Caes.: bes. in der Wendung ex eo numero qui, zB. unus ex eo numero, qui ad caedem parati erant, Sall. – β) wenn der relative Satz allgemeiner gefaßt wird als der Hauptsatz, si tempus est ullum iure hominis necandi, quae multa sunt, Cic. – Dies ist bes. der Fall, wenn das relat. Pron. auf ein demonstr. im Neutr. sich bezieht, Caesar pollicetur, ut, quod quisque eorum in bello amiserit, quae sint penes milites suos, iis, qui amiserint, restituatur, Caes. – Auffälliger ist der Sing. nach einem Substant. im Plur., wie Sall. Cat. 56, 5. – c) wenn qui in einem anderen Kasus steht, als das Verbum des relat. Satzes erwarten läßt. Dies ist der Fall, α) wenn es durch Attraktion den Kasus des vorhergegangenen Substant. annimmt, nos hoc confirmamus illo augurio, quo diximus, Cic.: in iis coloribus, quibus modo dixisti, denominandis, Gell. – Dies geschieht am häufigsten, wenn zu dem relat. Satze ein Verbum aus dem Hauptsatze ergänzt werden muß, quibus poterat sauciis ductis secum, Liv.: cum aliquid agas eorum, quorum consuesti, gaudeo, Cic. – β) wenn es bei Verbindung mehrerer relativen Satzglieder in dem zweiten in einem anderen Kasus hinzu ergänzt werden muß, als es im ersten steht, huius tyranni quem armis oppressa pertulit civitas paretque cum maxime mortuo, interitus declarat, Cic.
B) Der Modus ist 1) der Indicat., wenn das durch den relat. Satz dargestellte Attribut als ein wahrgenommenes oder faktisches hingestellt werden soll. Daher steht auch der Indikat. a) in der oratio obliqua, wenn durch das Rel. ein Subjekt oder Objekt umschrieben wird oder der Redende den Inhalt des Relativsatzes als seine Wahrnehmung hinstellt, constituunt, ut ii, qui valetudine aut aetate inutiles sunt bello, oppido excedant, Caes. – b) wenn der Inhalt des Relativsatzes als etwas Faktisches das Prädikat des Hauptsatzes erklären od. bedingen soll, o fortunata mors, quae naturae debita pro patria est potissimum reddita, Cic.: ista quidem sententia ea est, quae neque amicos parat neque inimicos tollit, Liv.: daher auch, wenn es durch quippe, utpote, ut verstärkt wird, quippe quibus aegre ad undecimum lapidem occursum est, Liv.
2) der Coniunctiv, u. zwar: a) in der oratio obliqua, apud Hypanim fluvium Aristoteles ait bestiolas quasdam nasci, quae unum diem vivant, Cic. – b) wenn der Inhalt des Relativsatzes nach der Vorstellung des Redenden nur als möglich hingestellt wird, homines imperiti facilius, quod stulte dixeris, reprehendere, quam quod sapienter tacueris, laudare possunt, Cic. – c) wenn der Inhalt des Relativsatzes als beabsichtigt hingestellt wird, deutsch auf daß, damit, od. um zu mit Infin., sunt multi, qui eripiunt aliis, quod aliis largiantur, Cic. – d) wenn der Inhalt des Relativsatzes den Grund zu der im Hauptsatze ausgesprochenen Erscheinung darstellen soll, deutsch da, da ja, recte Socrates exsecrari eum solebat, qui primus utilitatem a iure seiunxisset, Cic.: Caninius fuit mirificā vigilantiā, qui suo toto consulatu somnum non viderit, Cic.: neque est boni neque liberalis parentis, quem procrearis et eduxeris, eum non et vestire et ornare, Cic. – e) wenn der Inhalt des Relativsatzes als aus der Beschaffenheit des Subjektes im Hauptsatze erfolgend dargestellt werden soll, sapientia est una, quae maestitiam pellat ex animis, quae nos exhorrescere metu non sinat, Cic. – Dies ist bes. der Fall, α) wenn im Hauptsatze die Beschaffenheit angedeutet wird entweder durch die demonstrativen Wörter is, talis, eiusmodi, tam, tantus od. durch die Adjektive aptus, idoneus, dignus, indignus u.a., beutsch daß od. um zu mit Infin., ego is sum, qui nihil fecerim, Cic.: nulla acies humani ingenii tanta est, quae penetrare in caelum, terram intrare possit, Cic.: Livianae fabulae non satis dignae, quae iterum legantur, Cic.: solum censebant idoneum, cui crederetur, Cic. – β) wenn sich der Relativsatz auf ein allgemeines u. unbestimmtes Subjekt oder Objekt bezieht, bes. nach den Verben habere, reperire, invenire, nancisci, quaerere, esse, exsistere, exoriri u. nach den Verbindungen nemo est, nullus est, nihil est, quis est, quotus quis que est u.a., nactus sum, qui Xenophontis similem esse se cuperet, Cic.: est aliquid, quod non oporteat, etiamsi licet, Cic.: quis est, qui dicere audeat, Cic.: nihil est, quod tam miseros faciat, quam impietas et scelus, Cic. – γ) wenn nach einem Komparativ ein mit dem Relativum gebildeter Vergleichungssatz gebraucht wird, Campani maiora in defectione deliquerant, quam quibus ignosci posset, als daß ihnen usw., Liv.

Pronoun.B in [dialect] Att., definite or prepositive Article.C in [dialect] Ep., the so-called postpositive Article, = relative Pronoun, ὅς, ἥ, ὅ.—The nom. masc. and fem. sg. and pl., ὁ, ἡ, οἱ, αἱ, have no accent in codd. and most printed books, exc. when used as the relative ; but ὁ, ἡ, οἱ, αἱ differ only in writing from ὃ, ἣ, οἳ, αἳ ; the nom. forms of the article are said by Hdn.Gr.1.474 to be oxytone, and by A.D.Pron.8.7 not to be enclitic. The forms τῶν, τοῖς, ταῖς were barytone (i. e. τὼν, τοὶς, ταὶς ) in [dialect] Aeol. acc. to Aristarch. ap. A.D.Synt.51.26. For οἱ, αἱ some dialects (not Cypr., cf. Inscr.Cypr.135.30H., nor Cret., cf.Leg.Gort. 5.28, nor Lesbian, cf. Alc.81, Sapph.Supp.5.1 ) and Hom. have τοί, ταί (though οἱ, αἱ are also found in Hom.): other Homeric forms are gen. sg. τοῖο, gen. and dat. dualτοῖιν Od.18.34
, al.: gen. pl. fem. τάων [pron. full] [ᾱ], dat. τοῖσι, τῇς and τῇσι, never ταῖσι or ταῖς in Hom.— In [dialect] Dor. and all other dialects exc. [dialect] Att. and [dialect] Ion. the fem. forms preserve the old [pron. full] ᾱ instead of changing it to η, hence [dialect] Dor. etc. ἁ, τάν, τᾶς ; the gen. pl. τάων contracts in many dialects to τᾶν ; the gen. sg. is in many places τῶ, acc. pl. τώς, but Cret., etc., τόνς (Leg.Gort.7.7, al.) or τός (ib.3.50, al.) ; in Lesbian [dialect] Aeol. the acc. pl. forms are τοὶς, ταὶς, IG12(2).645 A13, B62 ; dat. pl. τοῖς, ταῖς (or τοὶς, ταὶς, v. supr.), ib.645 A8, ib.1.6 ; ταῖσι as demonstr., Sapph. 16. The [dialect] Att. Θράσυλος in Id.8.104, with ὁ Θ. ib. 105 ; or when the person spoken of is to be specially distinguished, Ζεύς, ὅστις ὁ Ζεύς whoever this Zeus is, E.Fr. 480 ; and therefore properly omitted when a special designation follows, as Σωκράτης ὁ φιλόσοφος: seldom in Trag. with pr. nn., save to give pecul. emphasis, like Lat. ille, ὁ Λάϊος, ὁ Φοῖβος, S.OT 729, El.35, etc.: later, however, the usage became very common (the Homeric usage of ὁ with a pr. n. is different, v. It is doubtful if it is ever used in a purely loc. sense; at land, Grág. (Sb.)ii. 211, is probably corrupt; at hönd = á hönd, Grág. (Sb.) i. 135; at mót = at móti, v. this word.☞ In compounds (v. below) at- or að- answers in turn to Lat. ad- or in- or con-; atdráttr e. g. denotes collecting; atkoma is adventus: it may also answer to Lat. ob-, in atburðr = accidence, but might also be compared with Lat. occurrere.2.and að, the mark of the infinitive [cp. Goth. du; A. S. and Engl. to; Germ. zu]. Except in the case of a few verbs ‘at’ is always placed immediately before the infinitive, so as to be almost an inseparable part of the verb.I. it is used either,1. as, a simple mark of the infinitive, only denoting an action and independent of the subject, e. g. at ganga, at hlaupa, at vita, to go, to run, to know; or,2. in an objective sense when following such verbs as bjóða segja…, to invite, command …; hann bauð þeim at ganga, at sitja, be bade, ordered them to go, sit, or the like; or as gefa and fá; gefa e-m at drekka, at eta, to give one to drink or to eat, etc. etc.β. with the additional notion of intention, esp. when following verba cogitandi; hann ætlaði, hafði í hyggju at fara, he had it in his mind to go (where ‘to go’ is the real object to ætlaði and hafði í hyggju).3. answering to the Gr. ινα, denoting intention, design, in order to; hann gékk í borg at kaupa silfr, in order to buy, Nj. 280; hann sendi riddara sína með þeim at varðveita þær, 623. 45: in order to make the phrase more plain, ‘svá’ and ‘til’ are frequently added, esp. in mod. writers, ‘svá at’ and contr. ‘svát’ (the last however is rare), ‘til at’ and ‘til þess at,’ etc.II. in the earlier times the infin., as in Greek and Lat., had no such mark; and some verbs remain that cannot be followed by ‘at;’ these verbs are almost the same in Icel. as in Engl.:α. the auxiliary verbs vil, mun ( μέλλω), skal; as in Engl. to is never used after the auxiliaries shall, will, must; ek vil ganga, I will go; ek mun fara, (as in North. E.) I mun go; ek skal göra þat, I shall do that, etc.β. the verbs kunna, mega, as in Engl. I can or may do, I dare say; svá hygginn at hann kunni fyrir sökum ráða, Grág. ii. 75; í öllu er prýða má góðan höfðingja, Nj. 90; vera má, it may be; vera kann þat, id.: kunnu, however, takes ‘at’ whenever it means to know, and esp. in common language in phrases such as, það kann að vera, but vera kann þat, v. above.γ. lata, biðja, as in Engl. to let, to bid; hann lét (bað) þá fara, he let (bade) them go.δ. þykkja, þykjast, to seem; hann þykir vera, he is thought to be: reflex., hann þykist vera, sibi videtur: impers., mér þykir vera, mibi videtur, in all cases without ‘at.’ So also freq. the verbs hugsa, hyggja, ætla, halda, to think, when denoting merely the act of thinking; but if there be any notion of intention or purpose, they assume the ‘at;’ thus hann ætlaði, hugði, þá vera góða menn, he thought them to be, acc. c. inf.; but ætlaði at fara, meant to go, etc.ε. the verbs denoting to see, bear; sjá, líta, horfa á … ( videre); heyra, audire, as in Engl. I saw them come, I heard him tell, ek sá þá koma, ek heyrði hann tala.ζ. sometimes after the verbs eiga and ganga; hann gékk steikja, be went to roast, Vkv. 9; eiga, esp. when a mere periphrasis instead of skal, móður sína á maðr fyrst fram færa (better at færa), Grág. i. 232; á þann kvið einskis meta, 59; but at meta, id. l. 24; ráða, nema, göra …, freq. in poetry, when they are used as simple auxiliary verbs, e. g. nam hann sér Högna hvetja at rúnum, Skv. 3. 43.η. hljóta and verða, when used in the sense of must (as in Engl. he must go), and when placed after the infin.of another verb; hér muntu vera hljóta, Nj. 129; but hljóta at vera: fara hlýtr þú, Fms. 1. 159; but þú hlýtr at fara: verða vita, ii. 146; but verða at vita: hann man verða sækja, þó verðr (= skal) maðr eptir mann lifa, Fms. viii. 19, Fas. ii. 552, are exceptional cases.θ. in poetry, verbs with the verbal neg. suffix ‘-at,’ freq. for the case of euphony, take no mark of the infinitive, where it would be indispensable with the simple verb, vide Lex. Poët. Exceptional cases; hvárt sem hann vill ‘at’ verja þá sök, eða, whatever he chooses, either, Grág. i. 64; fyrr viljum vér enga kórónu at bera, en nokkut ófrelsi á oss at taka, we would rather bear no crown than …, Fms. x. 12; the context is peculiar, and the ‘at’ purposely added. It may be left out ellipt.; e. g. þá er guð gefr oss finnast (= at finnast), Dipl. ii. 14; gef honum drekka (= at drekka), Pr. 470; but mostly in unclassical writers, in deeds, or the like, written nastily and in an abrupt style.3.and að, conj. [Goth. þatei = οτι; A. S. þät; Engl. that; Germ, dass; the Ormul. and Scot. at, see the quotations sub voce in Jamieson; in all South-Teutonic idioms with an initial dental: the Scandinavian idioms form an exception, having all dropped this consonant; Swed. åt, Dan. at]. In Icel. the Bible translation (of the 16th century) was chiefly based upon that of Luther; the hymns and the great bulk of theol. translations of that time were also derived from Germany; therefore the germanised form það frequently appears in the Bible, and was often employed by theol. authors in sermons since the time of the Reformation. Jón Vidalin, the greatest modern Icel. preacher, who died in 1720, in spite of his thoroughly classical style, abounds in the use of this form; but it never took root in the language, and has never passed into the spoken dialect. After a relative or demonstr. pronoun, it freq. in mod. writers assumes the form eð, hver eð, hverir eð, hvað eð, þar eð. Before the prep. þú (tu), þ changes into t, and is spelt in a single word attú, which is freq. in some MS.;—now, however, pronounced aððú, aððeir, aððið …, = að þú…, with the soft Engl. th sound. It gener. answers to Lat. ut, or to the relat. pron. qui.I. that, relative to svá, to denote proportion, degree, so…, that, Lat. tam, tantus, tot…, ut; svá mikill lagamaðr, at…, so great a lawyer, that…, Nj. 1; hárið svá mikit, at þat…, 2; svá kom um síðir því máli, at Sigvaldi, it came so far, that…, Fms. xi. 95, Edda 33. In the law we find passages such as, þá er um er dæmt eina sök, at þá eigu þeir aptr at ganga í dóminn, Grág. i. 79; ef þing ber á hina helgu viku, at þat á eigi fyrir þeim málum at standa, 106; þat er ok, at þeir skulu reifa mál manna, 64; at þeir skulu með váttorð þá sök sækja, 65: in all these cases ‘at’ is either superfluous or, which is more likely, of an ellipt. nature, ‘the law decrees’ or ‘it is decreed’ being understood. The passages Sks. 551, 552, 568, 718 B, at lokit (= at ek hefi lokit), at hugleitt (= at ek hefi h.), at sent (= at ek hefi sent) are quite exceptional.4.and að, an indecl. relat. pronoun [Ulf. þatei = ος, ος αν, οστις, οσπερ, οιος, etc.; Engl. that, Ormul. at], with the initial letter dropped, as in the conj. at, (cp. also the Old Engl. at, which is both a conj. and a pronoun, e. g. Barbour vi. 24 in Jamieson: ‘I drede that his gret wassalage, | And his travail may bring till end, | That at men quhilc full litil wend.’ | ‘His mestyr speryt quhat tithings a t he saw.’—Wyntoun v. 3. 89.) In Icel. ‘er’ (the relat. pronoun) and ‘at’ are used indifferently, so that where one MS. reads ‘er,’ another reads ‘at,’ and vice versâ; this may easily be seen by looking at the MSS.; yet as a rule ‘er’ is much more freq. used. In mod. writers ‘at’ is freq. turned into ‘eð,’ esp. as a superfluous particle after the relative pron. hverr (hver eð, hvað eð, hverir eð, etc.), or the demonstr. sá (sá eð, þeir eð, hinir eð, etc.):—who, which, that, enn bezta grip at ( which) hafði til Íslands komið, Ld. 202; en engi mun sá at ( cui) minnisamara mun vera, 242; sem blótnaut at ( quae) stærst verða, Fms. iii. 214; þau tiðendi, at mér þætti verri, Nj. 64, etc. etc.5.n. collision (poët.); odda at, crossing of spears, crash of spears, Höfuðl. 8.6.the negative verbal suffix, v. -a.
