Créée par Jeff Bezos en juillet 1995 à Seattle (Etat de Washington, aux Etats-Unis), la librairie en ligne Amazon.com (devenue Amazon dans le langage courant) débute avec dix salariés et trois millions d’articles. Pionnier d’un nouveau modèle économique, elle devient vite un géant du commerce électronique. En novembre 2000, la société compte 7.500 salariés, 28 millions d’articles, 23 millions de clients et quatre filiales au Royaume-Uni (filiale ouverte en octobre 1998), en Allemagne (filiale ouverte à la même date), en France (filiale ouverte en août 2000) et au Japon (filiale ouverte en octobre 2000). Une librairie numérique est une librairie vendant des livres numériques, le plus souvent par téléchargement, ou alors sous forme de fichier joint à un courriel. Ces livres sont disponibles dans plusieurs formats, chaque format correspondant à un logiciel de lecture (par exemple l’Adobe Reader, le Microsoft Reader ou le Mobipocket Reader). La première librairie francophone vendant exclusivement des livres numériques est Numilog, qui débute ses activités en septembre 2000 et propose ensuite aussi une librairie anglophone. Numilog est suivi de Mobipocket, une société spécialisée dans les logiciels de lecture et les livres numériques pour PDA (personal digital assistant). Mobipocket lance une librairie internationale en ligne sur son propre site et sur les sites de divers partenaires. -

( Macintosh)Créé en 1984 par la société Apple, le Mac (Macintosh) est le premier ordinateur personnel disposant d’une interface graphique intuitive facilement utilisable par le non spécialiste. Tous les éléments mis en oeuvre dans le premier Mac sont d’ailleurs repris ensuite par Microsoft lors du lancement de son système d’exploitation Windows. Le succès commercial du Mac est immédiat. Le Mac a son propre système d’exploitation, le Mac OS, devenu le Mac OS X. La gamme Mac (iMac, iBook, etc.) propose des ordinateurs personnels et portables configurés pour une utilisation facile par l’usager, y compris pour la connexion à l’internet. Leurs formes arrondies et leurs couleurs translucides tranchent agréablement avec celles des modèles vendus par IBM, Compaq, Dell et les autres. A cause de la souplesse qu’elle procure, cette gamme est particulièrement populaire auprès des designers graphiques, des artistes visuels, des éditeurs spécialisés et des linguistes utilisant plusieurs séries de caractères à la fois.
