Отныне он вынужден в одиночку вести непрерывную борьбу за выживание: добывать еду из крысиных ловушек, сражаться с пауками и т. д. Текст закадрового комментария отличается большим мастерством; в нем распознается дьявольский талант Мэтисона. Подойдя к концу рассказа, герой утверждает, что больше не боится; инстинкт заменил все в его жизни, и у него теперь все хорошо. На самом же деле он ужасно подавлен. Джек Арнолд использует огромные пустые пространства черно-белого экрана, чтобы передать последовательное нарастание подавленности героя. Сдержанная и точная работа режиссера, лишенная излишней виртуозности, стремится очень удачными комбинированными съемками выразить тот кошмар, в который попадает главный герой, а вслед за ним - и зритель. Этот фильм - серьезный без пафоса и зрелищный без детской наивности - один из лучших образцов гуманистического направления голливудской научной фантастики, которое было очень популярно в 50-е гг.N.В. Судя по всему, в США прокат фильма на широкоэкранных копиях (формат «Cinernascope») был очень ограничен и даже практически сведен к нулю. Тем не менее, именно в таком виде фильм вышел во Франции и именно так его и надо смотреть, чтобы оценить все его достоинства.
