102 μήδεα 1
μήδεα 1Grammatical information: n. pl.Meaning: `male sexual parts', ( φωτός) Od., Androm. ap. Gal., Call., also Ant. Lib.) μέζεα (Hes. Op. 512, Lyc.); μέδεα (Archil. 138); in Opp. (K. 4,441) metaph. `urine'; μέζος αἰδοῖον H.Compounds: As 2. member in εὑμέζεος (cod. - μάξεως; leg. - μεζέος?) εὑφυης (cod. - εὶς; leg. - οῦς?) τοῖς αἰδοίοις H.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: The relation between μήδεα: μέζεα: μέδεα has not been explained. Wackernagel Unt. 227 n. 1 sees hesitatingly (after Nauck) in μήδεα a euphemistic replacement for the rough μέζεα, μέδεα; in μέζεα Schwyzer 208 with Bechtel and v. Wilamowitz assumes a spirantic pronunciation of the δ. -- Because of the meaning the etymol. explanation is difficult. Schwyzer l.c. connects μήδομαι, pointing to OHG gimaht f. `facultas, genitalia'. It would be then a euphemism identical with μήδεα `counsels, cares'. Thus (doubting) Spitzer BSL 40, 47 with P. Friedländer, with Lat. mentula (to mens??) as a very doubtful parallel. -- Not with Curtius 662, Fick 1, 507 a. o. to μαδάω `drip'; cf. μεστός. By WP. 2, 231 (Pok. 706) separated from μαδάω and combined only with Celt., e.g. MIr. mess (\< * med-tu-) `gland' assuming an allcomprising meaning `swell, swollen in the form of balls(?)'. The variation clearly points to a Pre-Greek word; on ε\/η cf. Fur. 258 n. 42; δ\/ζ is well known (Fur. 253ff.). This type of meaning fits well with a substratum word.Page in Frisk: 2,222Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μήδεα 1

103 ὀπτάω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to fry, to roast, to bake' (Od.).Other forms: ὀπτεύμενος (Theoc.), aor. ὀπτῆσαι (Il.), ὀπτηθῆναι (Od.), perf. ὤπτηκα, - ημαι (Euphro resp. Ar.), fut. ὀπτήσομαι (Luc.).Derivatives: ὄπτησις f. `the frying' (Miletos Va, Hp., Arist.) with ὀπτήσιμος `fit for frying' (Eub., Arbenz 82), ὀπτ-ήτειρα f. adjunct of κάμινος (Call.). - ητήρια H. as explanation of ὠψά (alphabet. in wrong place, very doubtful); also ὀπτευτήρ m. `smith', of Hephaistos (Coluth. 54 [V--VIp]) as if from *ὀπτεύω; cf. καμινευτήρ a.o. As 2. member in γαστρ-όπτης, f. - όπτις `sausage fryer' (Delos IV--IIIa; cf. Fraenkel Nom. ag. 1, 243 a. 2, 115 with wrong root-analysis). Backformation ἔξ-οπτος `well done' (Hp.), from ἐξ-οπτάω (IA.). -- Beside ὀπτός `fried, roasted, baked' (Od.); with ὀπτ-αλέος `fried, roasted' (Hom., Ath.), first after αὑαλέος a. o. from ὀπτός enlarged; or with old λ: ν-variation(?) with ὀπτανός `fried, fit for frying' (com., Arist.), formed like ἑψανός with related meaning; on the type (Schwyzer 490 n. 3 w. lit.). To ὀπτανός further ὀπτάν-ιον `kitchen' (com., inscr.), - ικός `fit for frying' (pap. IIIp), - εύς m. `kitchen master' (pap.; Bosshardt 66) with - εῖον (-ήϊον) `kitchen' (Plu., Luc., Hdn. Gr.); ὀπτανάριος assator, coctarius Gloss. -- On itself ὀπτασία f. about `the roasting, kiln' ( PHolm. 9, 39 δὸς εἰς ὀπτασίαν ὀπτᾶσθαι), prob. to ὀπτάω after θερμασία v.t.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: As to the formation ὀπτάω belongs to the verbs in - τάω, ἀρτάω, φοιτάω, οὑτάω etc. (Schwyzer 705). As basis is generally considered and prob. correctly the verbal adj. ὀπτός ( τὰ ὀπτά? Risch $ 112b, questioning). -- Further unclear. The connection with ὀβελός (Schwyzer Festschr. Kretschmer 251) has as root-etymolog a very limited worth. Diff. attempts to connect ὀπτός with πέσσω, in Prellwitz (s. Bq) and Benveniste Origines 157f. - Furnée 263 compares ὄψον `any cooked food', which seems a good possibility; the variation will be Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 2,406-407Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ὀπτάω

104 ὁράω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to look, to perceive, to contemplate, to see' (Il.).Other forms: Ion. also ὀρέω (Hdt.), and besides ὅρηαι (ξ 343), ὁρητο (A 56 a. 198 after Zenodot, accent uncertain), ὀρῃ̃ς, -ῃ̃, - ῆν (Hp., Democr., Herod.), Aeol. ὄρημι (Sapph.), ὄρη (Theoc.); ipf. ἑώρων (Att.), ep. 3. sg. ὅρα, Ion. ὥρα (Hdt.) etc.; pres. also ὄρονται (ξ 104) with - ντο (γ 471), ὅρει φυλάσσει H.; innovated perf. act. ἑόρακα (Att., also ἑώρ-), Ion. ὀρώρηκα a. ὤρηκα (Herod.), Dor. ptc. ὡρακυῖα (Epid.), midd. ἑώραμαι (late Att.), aor. pass. ὁραθῆναι (Arist., D.S.), plqu. also ὀρώρει (Ψ 112).Derivatives: Few derivv., almost all hell. and late, as opposed to the older ones which derive from primary ὀπ- (s. ὄπωπα) and ἰδεῖν: 1. ὁρᾶ-τός `visible' (Hp., Pl.), προ-ορατός `who can be foreseen' (X. Cyr. 1, 6,23) as against πρό-οπτος ( προὖπ-τος) `foreseen, apparent' (IA.); 2. ὅραμα n. `sight, spectacle, apparition' (X., Arist., LXX), παρ- ὁράω (hell. a. late), m. ὁραματίζομαι (Aq.) against ὄμμα, εἶδος (s.vv.); 3. ὅρασις f., also with προ-, παρ-, ὑπερ- a.o., `sight, face, look, apparition', pl. also `eyes' (Demad., Arist., Men.) against ὄψις; ὑφόρα-σις `suspicion' (Plb.) for older ὑποψ-ία; 4. ὁρατής m. `viewer' (LXX, Plu.) against ὀπτήρ `scout'; ὁρατήρ H. as explanation of ὀπτήρ; 5. ὁρατικός `able to see, provided with sight' (Arist., Ph.), ἐφ- ὁράω `fit for oversight' (X.): ἐποπτ-ικός `belonging to ἐπόπτης' (Pl.). 6. ὁρατίζω `to catch sight of, to aim for' (medic. IVp). 7. οὖρος m. `watcher', ἐπίουρος s. v.Origin: IE [Indo-European] [1164] *u̯er- `observe, note'Etymology: From the ipf. ἑώρων (\< *ἠ-Ϝόρων; w. asp. after ὁρῶ) and the pf. ἑόρακα (\< *Ϝε-Ϝόρακα; ἑώρ- after the ipf.) we conclude to an orig. Ϝ-, which however neither in Homer nor epigraphically has left a trace, and also in Myc. oromeno is absent; whether the asper hangs together with the older Ϝ-, remains uncertain (Schwyzer 22 6 f. w. lit.). -- The above presentforms, from which come all non-present forms including the verbal nouns, seem to require three diff. stems: 1. Ϝορᾶ- in ὁρά-ω, from which perh. purely phonetically Ion. ὀρέω (Schwyzer 242); 2. Ϝορη- in Aeol. ὄρημι, ὄρη, ep. ὅρηαι a.o. (s. above); 3. Ϝορ- in ὄρονται, - ντο, ὅρει. Orig. *Ϝορᾶ-ι̯ω can be either an iterative-intensive deverbative of the type ποτάομαι (s. Schwyzer 718 f.), with which the meaning fits well, or be explained as denominative from *Ϝορά̄ f., which is found in φρουρά from *προ-hορά (\< *προ-Ϝορά) and in German., e.g. OHG wara f. `attentiveness', wara neman ' wahrnehmen': IE *u̯orā́ f., beside which Toch. A war, B were `flavour', IE *u̯oro-s m. Difficult to judge however is (Ϝ)όρη-μι etc. It looks like a disyllabic athemat. formation, and ὀρῃ̃ς, -ῃ̃, - ῆν can have been tranformed from this by thematization (Schwyzer 680). One may compare Lat. verē-ri `observe scrupulously, venerate', though with ablauting stemvowel. Weakest attested is the primary monosyll. (orig. athematic?; Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 311) ὄρονται, - ντο (to which also ὅρει in H.?); it regards moreover the same formulaic expression: ἐπὶ δ' ἀνέρες ἐσθλοὶ ὄρονται (- ντο), thus in plqu. ἐπὶ δ' ἀνηρ ἐσθλὸς ὀρώρει. Here too the o-vowel is remarkable, though analogous cases can be found like ὄθομαι, οἴχομαι a.o. (Schwyzer 721, Chantraine l.c.). To the primry verb belong both *προ-Ϝορ-ά in φρουρά (s. above and s.v.) and the form which occurs only in compounds as 2. member, - (Ϝ)ορ-ός, `guardian', e.g. θυρ-, τιμ-ωρός, κηπουρός from θυρα-, τιμα-, κηπο-Ϝορ-ός; it agrees formally (but not functionally) with Germ., e.g. OS war `attentive, cautious', OHG giwar `id., gewahr'. The other word belonging to this group from diff. languages, e.g. Latv. veruôs, vērtiês `inspect, observe', Toch. A wär, B wär-sk- `smell', Hitt. u̯erite- `fear', give nothing for Greek. -- Further forms w. lit. in WP. 1, 284f., Pok. 1164, W.-Hofmann s. vereor. Secondary verbs: 1. σκαλ-εύω, aor. σκαλεῦσαι, also w. ἀνα-, ἐκ-, ὑπο- a. o. `to hack, to scrape, to stir up' (Hp., Ar., Arist. etc.) with several derivv.: σκαλ-εύς m. `hack' (X., Poll.; not with Bosshardt 54 from *σκαλή), - ευσις f. `the scraping' (Aq.), - ευμα n. `scrapings' (sch., H.), - ευθρον n. `poker' (Poll.; cf. Bechtel Dial. 1, 210), - εία f. `the hacking' (Gp. tit.). 2. σκαλ-ίζω (ἀ- σκάλλω) `id.' (Phryn.) with - ισμός m. `the hacking' (pap., Eun.), - ιστή-ριον n. `hack' (sch.). - On σκαλίας s.v.Etymology: As zero grade yot-present σκάλλω can be formally identified with Lith. skiliù, inf. skìlti `strike fire': IE *skl̥-i̯ō [but the accent shows that the root is disyllabic; s. bel.]. Semantically closer are the innovated nasalpresents skįlù (skylù) `split off, get a tear' and the full grade skeliù, skélti `split', also `strike fire (ùgnį) (from a stone)', the last of which is also found in Germ., e.g. ONord. skilja `separate, distinguish'. Diff. again MLG schelen `id.' (PGm. * skelōn; type Lat. secāre), Arm. c'elum `split' (u-pesent; anlaut unclear), Hitt. iškallāi- `split, tear apart' (formation uncertain; s. Kronasser Etymologie $ 200 f., 214). -- The Greek derivv. go all back on ungeminated σκαλ-, which must not be old, but may have originated after σφαλ- (: σφάλλω), θαλ- (: θ άλλω) etc. Sophie Minon ( RPh. LXXIV 282) reconstructs *skl̥h₁-ye\/o-, assuming that the laryngeal disappeared in this position, after Pinault 1982, 265-272; cf. LIV 500. On σκαλαθύρω s.v. -- To the same formal system, but independent of σκάλλω, belong also σκαλμός `thole', σκῶλος, σκόλοψ etc.; s. vv. A clear separation from the semant. cognate κολάπτω, κόλος, κλάω, κελεός etc. cannot be achieved; [not here σκύλλω]. -- The non-Greek formations are innumerable; on this WP. 2, 590ff., Pok. 923ff. w. rich lit.Page in Frisk: 2,715-716Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σκάλλω

107 Anthemios of Tralles
SUBJECT AREA: Architecture and building[br]fl. sixth century AD Tralles, Lydia, Asia Minor[br]Greek architect, geometer, mathematician and physicist.[br]Tralles was a wealthy city in ancient Greece. Ruins of the city are situated on a plateau above the present-day Turkish city of Aydin, in Asia Minor, which is near to Ephesus. In 334 BC Tralles was used as a base by Alexander the Great and later it was occupied by the Romans. After the collapse of the western half of the Roman Empire in the fifth century AD Tralles remained a part of the Byzantine Empire until its destruction in 1282. Anthemios was one of the great sons of Tralles and was probably educated in Alexandria. He is especially famed as architect (with Isodorus of Miletos) of the great Church of Santa Sophia in Istanbul. This vast building, later a Turkish mosque and now a museum, was built for the Emperor Justinian between 532 and 537 AD. It was an early and, certainly for many centuries, the largest example of pendentive construction to support a dome. This form, using the spherical triangles of the pendentives, enabled a circular-based dome to be supported safely upon piers that stood on a square plan below. It gradually replaced the earlier squinch type of structure, though both forms of design stem from Middle Eastern origins. At Santa Sophia the dome rises to 180ft (55m) above floor level and has a diameter of over 100ft (30m). Together with Isodorus, Anthemios also worked upon the Church of the Holy Apostles in Istanbul.[br]Further ReadingG.L.Huxley, 1959, Anthemius of Tralles: A Study in Later Greek Geometry, Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press.Procopius, 1913, De Aedificiis, On the Buildings Constructed by the Emperor Justinian, Leipzig.Richard Krautheimer, 1965, Early Christian and Byzantine Architcture, Penguin.DY -

HIST. gymnasium* * *das Gymnasiumhigh school; grammar school* * *A Gymnasium is a secondary school which students attend for nine or, in some federal states, eight years and which leads to the Abitur. The final two years at a Gymnasium (two and a half in some Länder) are known as the Kollegstufe. The curriculum varies according to the type of school: in a humanistisches Gymnasium Latin and Greek are taught in a neusprachliches Gymnasium English, Latin and French or other lingua franca are taught and in a mathematisch-naturwissenschaftliches Gymnasium the emphasis is on the sciences. A Gymnasium may offer several of these curricula, which pupils choose from when they reach a certain class, usually the seventh or ninth. Since nowadays many students who have taken their Abitur do not necessarily continue studying but undertake a period of training instead, new types of Gymnasien (for example Wirtschaftsgymnasien) have been created with an emphasis on practical work.
