Наездница влюбляется в Рекса, красивого брюнета-канатоходца, недавно пришедшего в их цирк. Чарли ревнует и грустит; вскоре его клоунские номера уже никого не могут рассмешить. В отсутствие Рекса он заменяет его на канате. Из осторожности он надевает страховочный пояс; другой конец лонжи держит реквизитор на арене. В самой середине номера пояс отстегивается. Чарли продолжает выступление с риском для жизни, воюя с обезьянками, которые щиплют и раздевают его. Директор опять бьет дочь, Чарли заступается за нее и снова теряет работу. Ночью наездница приходит к нему. Чарли разыскивает Рекса и уговаривает влюбленных пожениться. Они, счастливые, уезжают в цирковом фургоне, а Чарли в одиночестве идет навстречу своей судьбе.► Фильм был снят в сложный период в жизни Чаплина, когда по Америке прокатилась обличительная кампания, развернутая жаждущей развода Литой Грей и доведшая режиссера до нервного срыва. Эта кампания сказалась и на успехе Цирка, который был лучше принят в Европе, чем в Америке. Все эти неприятности вынудили Чаплина задержать на год окончание съемок и выпуск фильма в прокат. 2-я сцена (погоня за бродягой на ярмарке) особенно восхитительна. Она представляет собой вершину бурлескного дарования Чаплина, где огромное значение имеет ритм, придающий музыкальный порядок искрящемуся водопаду гэгов. У Чаплина ритм и хореография играют в построении гэгов такую же роль, что и мелодрама - в построении сюжета; это объединяющий, усиливающий и лирический фактор. В основном, за исключением этой сцены, Цирк - очень уравновешенная, горькая и грустная картина, действие которой происходит в довольно неспешном темпе. Постепенно бродяга превратился в совершенно положительного и даже героического персонажа, и в этом фильме такая метаморфоза впервые показана в законченном виде. Бродяга защищает добро, борется со злом и помогает найти счастье другим, сам оставаясь при этом несчастным. Его взаимоотношения с директором цирка, который то увольняет его, то нанимает снова, напоминают «контрастный душ», на который похожа дружба Чарли с миллионером в следующем фильме Чаплина, Огни большого города, City Lights. Отметим странную и символичную особенность персонажа, столкнувшегося в данном случае с миром шоу-бизнеса: в несчастий он теряет свой комический талант. Сам Чаплин не сталкивался со столь пагубным влиянием личной жизни на творчество; но он, несомненно, временами его опасался и потому захотел изгнать из себя эти страхи, выплеснув их на экран.N.В. 3-я телепередача из цикла Кевина Браунлоу и Дэйвида Гилла Неизвестный Чаплин, Unknown Chaplin, 1983 содержит важные сцены, не включенные Чаплином в фильм. Одна особенно удачна. Чарли хочет покрасоваться перед наездницей. Он дает денег посетителю кафе, чтобы тот позволил себя отдубасить. Посетитель соглашается, получает деньги и тумаки и уходит. После этого в кафе входит брат-близнец посетителя, и Чарли принимает его за того, кто только что ушел. Он принимается колотить его, думая, что перед ним все тот же человек. Но близнец дает сдачи и отправляет Чарли в нокаут. На помощь Чарли приходит его соперник-канатоходец, и сцена завершается совсем иначе, нежели предполагал Чарли: наездница еще больше восхищена канатоходцем. Несмотря на их высокий уровень, Чарли вырезал из фильма все сцены за пределами цирка, - несомненно, добиваясь единства действия. Это лишний раз доказывает крайнюю требовательность Чаплина. -
