В таких условиях Злу вовсе не обязательно принимать облики необыкновенных созданий (как чудовище Франкенштейна и его друзья); оно свободно перемещается по кровожадным эпизодам из жизни реальных исторических персонажей. Фильм был бы практически садистским, если бы деятельность Глостера (будущего Ричарда III) не подчинялась строго политическим амбициям. (Отметим тем не менее сцену, где он вожделеет жену принца Уэльского, на которой женится после убийства принца.)Пластические поиски фильма создают целый мир, нечто среднее между точной исторической реконструкцией и фантасмагорией. Батальные сцены, предстающие перед нами словно в виде китайских теней, ночью и под дождем, выглядят необыкновенно и создают почти галлюцинаторную атмосферу. Но хрупкое чувство тревоги и дискомфорта рождается в основном благодаря актерам; именно они придают фильму сходство с настоящим кошмаром: этому способствуют меланхоличная вялость Винсента Прайса (в роли Кларенса, человека со смелыми замыслами, но не предназначенного для великой судьбы), ледяная презрительность Бэзила Ратбоуна (Ричард III) и, главным образом, многоликая чудовищность Бориса Карлоффа. Карлофф – добросовестный страж комнаты пыток, официальный палач, не гнушающийся при случае убийством детей, плешивый, кривоногий, что подчеркивается фасоном штанов, с искривленной ступней – здесь в роли Морда создает один из самых страшных образов, когда-либо воплощенных им на экране.
