1916-1992Nacido el 14 de octubre de 1916 en New Haven, Connecticut, de padres rusos. La prosperidad familiar estuvo ligada al traslado a Nueva York, donde Arnold sintio despertar su vocacion teatral. Despues del derrumbe economico norteamericano de 1929 la familia quedo casi en la ruina, por lo que el joven Jack se determino, mas si cabe, a hacer carrera en el teatro. Su primera experiencia cinematografica fue curiosa: con una camara Kodak, modelo K, de 16 mm, filmo las obras de teatro en que no participaba, vendiendo copias a los actores. Durante la guerra, hizo un curso de cine en 1942, con objeto de presentarse en los Estudios Astoria de la Paramount pa ra optar al puesto de operador. Fue asignado a Ro bert Flaherty como asistente, con el que permanecio ocho meses. Despues de la guerra volvio a su trabajo teatral y, entre 1947 y 1949, rodo algunos cortos promocionales, antes de debutar en la realizacion de largometrajes con el filme de tono do cumental Whit These Hands (1950), sobre el mundo de la confeccion. El exito de la pelicula le abrio las puertas de la Universal, para la que rodaria, en primer lugar, la irrelevante Girls in the Night (1953). Entre 1953 y 1955 realizara otras cuatro peliculas, en el efimero sistema 3-D, que le permitiran ir afinando un estilo cinematografico propio, especialmente adecuado para producciones no demasiado costosas. Estuvo en la Uni versal hasta 1958, y despues, sin abandonarla del todo, dirigio peliculas para MGM, Paramount y otros estudios, hasta que, en 1976, despues del filme de accion Conspiracion en Suiza (The Swiss Cons piracy), se refugio en el medio televisivo. Estamos, sin lugar a dudas, ante uno de los grandes directores de la serie B, aunque serie B “de lujo”, con peliculas en su haber tan formidables como La mujer y el monstruo (Creature from the Black Lagoon, 1954), o The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957), no estrenada oficialmente en Espana pero conocida como El increible hombre menguante. 1905-1987Lo encontramos como montador en Universal, Para mount y Republic a partir de 1929. En los anos 40 dirige cortometrajes, algunos de los cuales logran merecida fama. En los 50 se convierte en un avispado productor de peliculas de aventuras, fundando la Warwick Productions con Albert R. Broccoli. Rompe con su socio a raiz de la llegada de James Bond, con la que Allen no estaba muy de acuerdo. Sorpren dentemente, aunque tal vez debido al exito de la serie del famoso espia, se hace cargo de la produccion de las peliculas consagradas a otro espia de ficcion, Matt Helm, encarnado por Dean Martin. Las tres entregas son The Silencers (Phil Karlson, 1966), Matt Helm, agente muy especial (Murderer’s Row, Henry Levin, 1967), y Emboscada a Matt Helm (The Ambushers, Henry Levin, 1968). Polaco de nacimiento, aborda esporadicamente la direccion de sus proyectos, entre los que cabe citar su colaboracion con Burgess Meredith en El hombre de la Torre Eiffel (The Man On the Eiffel Tour, 1949), y New Mexico, un western oficialmente dirigido por Irving Reis. 1914-1977Procedente de Broadway, donde llevo a cabo los mas dispares oficios, William Castle desembarca en Hollywood a los 23 anos, y seis mas tarde dirige su primera pelicula. Especialista en peliculas baratas de terror, de sarrollo diversos artilugios para el espectador, entre los que cabe citar la electrificacion de asientos para aumentar la tension en el espectador, y el diseno de esqueletos inflables que flotaban sobre la audiencia durante la proyeccion. No fue, a la vista de lo dicho, un especialista del western, pero rodo un punado de ellos, siempre con presupuestos ajustados y resultados artisticos mejores de lo que cabria suponer. En su curriculo hay que citar dos peliculas celebres, La dama de Shanghai (The Lady from Shanghai, Orson Welles,1947) y La semilla del diablo (Rosemary’s Ba by, Roman Polanski, 1968), de las que fue productor.Klondike Kate. 1943. 64 minutos. 1927Graduado en la Escuela de Arte Dramatico de Yale, es profesor de teatro durante algun tiempo, antes de dirigir programas de television. Procedente de ese medio, este mediocre realizador se asoma al cine en 1962 con la pelicula Belle Sommers que, al parecer, no es sino el episodio piloto de una serie de television. A partir de entonces dirige algunas peliculas, entre las que cabe citar dos westerns de poca monta que, sorprendentemente, obtuvieron una repercusion muy por encima de sus meritos. En particular, el primero de ellos, que es tambien la segunda pelicula de Silverstein, gozo del suplemento de prestigio anadido que corresponde a un Oscar de Hollywood, el alcanzado por su actor principal, Lee Marvin.Cat Ballou (La ingenua explosiva). 1965. 96 minutos.
