43 μάντις
Grammatical information: m. and f.Meaning: `seer, prophet' (Il.); also name of a plant (Nic.), a grasshopper, `praying manti' (Theoc., Dsc.), a garden-frog (H.); as announcing the weather, cf. Strömberg Pflanzennamen 79.Compounds: often as 2. member in the tragics, e.g. ἰατρό-μαντις `soothsayer, who is also a physician' (A.), cf. Risch IF 59, 272f. Rarely as 1. member, e.g. μαντι-πόλος `predicting' (E. in anap., Orac. ap. Luc., Man.).Derivatives: 1. μαντεῖος, -ήϊος `regarding the soothsayer, prophetic' (P., trag.; after βασιλεῖος etc.), μαντεῖον, -ήϊον n. `oracle, place of an oracle' (μ 272). 2. μαντικός `id.', μαντική ( τέχνη) `the art of seeing' (IA.; Chantraine Études 130 a. 143). 3. μαντῳ̃ος `id.' (AP; after ἡρῳ̃ος a. o.). 4. μαντοσύνη `gift of prophecy' (Il., Pi., Emp.; after ἱππο-σύνη etc., Wyss - συνη 24f., Porzig Satzinhalte 226), - συνος `belonging to the seer, oracle' (Corinna, E. in lyr.; Wyss - συνη 42). 5. μαντεύομαι, late also - εύω, `prophesy, predict, ask an oracle' (Il., after βασιλεύειν etc.; cf. Schwyzer 732) with μαντεία, - είη, η-ΐη `prophecy, the gift of prophecy, oracle' (h. Merc.; Zumbach Neuerungen 9), μάντευμα `oracle' (Pi., trag.), μαντευτής = μάντις (Hdt.), - εύτρια (Sch.). - PN Μάντιος (Od.).Etymology: As masc. concretum, esp. as nom. agentis in - τι-, μάντις is rather isolated; similar only μάρπτις `brigand' (A. Supp. 826 f.; text defect), πόρτις `calf'; quite uncertain the PN Σίντιες (Lemnos; σίνομαι?, s. Fraenkel Nom. ag. 1, 76). It lies at hand, to take it like φάτις as an original abstract fem. (Brugmann; e.g. 4239); on the question Holt Les noms d'action en - σις 40f., G. Liebert Das Nominalsuffix -ti- im Aind. (Lund 1949) 142ff. After Benveniste Origines 83 we should rather reconstruct an old neuter *τὸ μάντι `divination'; but μαντι-πόλος, adduced by B., can easily be explained differently, s. above. In nay case μάντις belongs to μαίνομαι, μανῆναι ( ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ μαίνεται Hdt. 4, 79; rejected by v. Wilamowitz Glaube 1, 40); semantically agrees the formally cognate but differently built Skt. múni- m. `illuminated, seer' (rejected by Mayrhofer KEWA 2, 654); in the West there is a different word for it (Lat. vātēs etc.; Porzig Gliederung 127). The ti-deriv. in Lat. mens etc. is qua content far off.Page in Frisk: 2,172-173Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μάντις

44 πῆμα
Grammatical information: n.Meaning: `disaster, sorrow, distress' (Il.).Compounds: Often as 2. member, e.g. ἀ-πήμων `without disaster, undamaged' (Il.); from there πήμων `baleful' (Orph.). Denominat. πημαίνω `to do harm, to damage' (Il.).Derivatives: Besides the enlargements: πημον-ή f. `id.' (trag., treaty ap. Th. 5, 18), πημο-σύνη f. `id.' (A., E., Orph.), ἀπημο-σύνη f. `sorrowlessness' (Thgn.) = ἀπημον-ίη f. (Call.); cf. Wyss - σύνη 33 a. 39.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Primary verbal noun, in Greek isolated. An exact formal agreement may be found in Av. pāman- n. name of a skin-disease; further, deviating only in gender, Skt. pāmán- m. `kind of skindisease, scratch'. Semantically much better fits Skt. pāpmán- m. `disaster, damage, sorrow', but this seems a transformation of pāmán- after pāpá- `bad, evil'. Further connections are uncertain, s. Mayrhofer s. pāpáḫ and pāmā́ w. further lit., W.-Hofmann s. paeminōsus (also w. lit.). -- Cf. πηρός and ταλαίπωρος.Page in Frisk: 2,529Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πῆμα

Wyss - σύνη 34; also as name of one of the Muses (h. Merc., Hes.); - συνον n. `id.' (Hdt., Th., Ar.); prob. poetical (Wyss 50); - ος `for remembrance' (LXX); besides Μναμόν-α (Ar. Lys. 1248; cf. on εὑφρόνη), Μνημ-ώ (Orph.) = Μνημοσύνη. Denominat. μνημον-εύω `remember' (IA) with μνημόνευ-σις, - μα etc. Adj. μνημον-ικός `for remembrance, with good memory' (Att.). -- 11. PN like Μνησεύς (Pl.; short name of Μνήσ-αρχος, Bosshardt 130), Μνασίλλει (Boeot.); Μνασέας; prob. hellenis. of Sem. Mǝnašše = Μανασση (Schulze Kl. Schr. 394 f.; cf. Bechtel Dial. 1, 414).Etymology: The above paradigm, together with the nominal formations built on a general μνᾱ-, is a purely Greek creation. The basis of the generalized system were of course one or a few verbal forms; as however the new system was already complete at the beginneing of Greek and the cognate languages present nothing that could be compared directly with the Greek forms, we can no more follow its creation. A monosyllabic IE * mnā- is found in class. Sanskrit, as in aor. a-mnā-siṣ-uḥ `they mentioned', which typologically reminds of μνῆ-σ-αι, in the perf. act. ma-mnau (gramm.), prob. innovation to midd. ma-mn-e (cf. μέμονα) and not (with Brugmann Grundr.2 II: 3,441) to be connected with μέμνημαι; further in - mnā-ta- `mentioned' and mnā-ya-te `is mentioned', with which agree on the one hand Ἄ-μνᾱ-τος and - with secondary σ (Schwyzer 503) - μνη-σ-τή, on the other hand μνάομαι. But the last is undoubtedly analogically innovated after wellknown patterns to μνήσασθαι etc.; also the verbal adj. does not look archaic. The development of μιμνήσκω has been prob. about the same as with κικλήσκω (where however καλέ-σαι was retained) or with βιβρώσκω (s.v.), where also non-Greek agreements to βρω- are rare or doubtful. The general re-creation isolated μιμνήσκω both formally and semantically from the old μέμονα and even more from μαίνομαι. -- From μνάομαι `remind, mention' developed as courteous expression the meaning `woo a woman, court'; s. Benveniste Sprachgesch. u. Wortbed. 13 ff., where also against the connection with γυνή (Schwyzer 726 n. 1). Against Benveniste Ambrosini Rend. Acc. Lincei 8: 10, 62ff. with new interpretation: to δάμνημι, ἀδμής; not convincing. -- Further rich lit. in WP. 2, 264ff., Pok. 726ff., W. -Hofmann s. meminī, Fraenkel Lit. et. Wb. s. miñti. Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to wrestle, to insist on wrestling' (Il.).Derivatives: 1. Παλαίμων, - ονος m. (Pln.) from δια-παλαίω (Ar., Ph.).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: If παλαίω can be compared with κεραίω (: κερά-σαι), λαγαίω (: λαγάσαι) a.o. (Schwyzer 676), the non-pres. tempora must have been second. formed; παίω, which is itself unclear, and the by Schw. l.c. adduced monosyll. present-stems are no help.
