προς-ελέω, od. προ-σελέω, richtiger προυσελέω, mißhandeln, beschimpfen, verhöhnen, schmähen, schimpflich od. schmählich behandeln, τινά; kommt nur in zwei Stellen der att. Poesie vor: Aesch. Prom. 436, wo Wellauer ὁρῶν ἐμαυτὸν ὧδε προυσελούμενον schreibt, wie Ar. Ran. 729 nach cod. Rav. προυσελοῠμεν für προςελοῦμεν, nach den alten Erkl. = ὑβρίζειν, προπηλακίζειν. Die Ableitung des Wortes ist dunkel; entweder leitet man es von ἕλος ab, so daß es wie προπηλακίζω eigtl. »mit Schlamm bespritzen, beschmutzen« wäre, od. man nimmt es für gleichbedeutend mit προςελάω, προςελαύνω, auf Einen losfahren, ihn hart anlassen; die jetzt aufgenommene Form, die E. M. p. 690, 1 u. andere alte Grammatiker προυσελεῖν od. προυσελλεῖν schreiben, kann freilich aus ἕλος vermittelst des Digamma hergeleitet werden, wie auch das von Hesych. u. Stob. überlieferte προυγελεῖν (vgl. Buttm. Lexil. II, 162), scheint aber doch einen andern Ursprung zu verrathen; Buttmann nimmt, wenig wahrscheinlich, σφέλας, σφάλλω als Stammwort an u. erkl. untertreten, ein Bein stellen; Passow meint, eine Herleitung von σίλλος liege näher.

Rh. 3, 1159; ήπειρος 2, 981; übtr. neben περίγειος Isocr. ep. 10. – Von der Insel der Kirke, χϑαμαλὴ κεῖται, Od. 10, 196, offenbar von der Warte aus gesehen, auf welcher Odysseus stand, schien die Insel flach dazuliegen; schwierig ist Od. 9, 25, von Ithaka gesagt: αὐτὴ δὲ χϑαμαλὴ πανυπερτάτη εἰν ἀλὶ κεῖται πρὸς ζόφον, wozu Strab. 10, 2,12 (p. 454) die Erkl. anführt ὡς τῇ ἀντικρὺ ἠπείρῳ πρόςχωρος, nach dem Festlande hin; ein Schol., der ταπεινή, κοίλη τὴν ϑέσιν erkl., findet eine Schwierigkeit in der Vrbdg mit πανυπερτάτη, die nicht da ist, da dieses nur von der geographischen Lage nach Norden hin zu verstehen ist; aber Ithaka heißt sonst felsig.

Instead of the earlier, semant. very attractive connection with Skt. skhálate, -ti `sumble, stagger, err', Arm. sxalem, -im `id.' (Fick 1. 143. 567, Hübschmann Armen. Gr. 1, 490 f.), which requires IE skʷhel- and is therefore coubtful, P. Wahrmann Glotta 6, 149ff. tries to connect σφάλλω with IE * sp(h)el- `split' in σπολάς, ἀσπάλαξ a.o. (s. vv. w. lit.) assuming an orig. meaning *'throw with sticks, put a stop between the legs v. t.' (details in WP. 2, 678 and Pok. 985); phonetically better, but semant. quite hypothetic. Diff., but also doubtful, Thieme KZ 69, 175. Suppositions on anlaut. σφ- in Hiersche Ten. aspiratae 194 w. lit. Older lit. in Bq; further W.-Hofmann s. fallō. -- Cf. σφαλός, σφέλας. Rix, Hist.
