On the comp. πλείων with sup. πλεῖστος s. esp. -- 2. πλή-μη f. `high tide, flood' (Plb., Str. a.o.), - σμη f. `id.' (Hes. Fr. 217), - μα πλήρωμα H., - σμα n. `fertilisation' (Arist.); - σμιος `saturating, causing tedium' (Epicur., medic.); - σμονή f. `fullness, congestion, (over)saturation' (IA.; Schwyzer 524, Chantraine Form. 207) with - σμονώδης (Hp., Gal.), - σμονικός (Pythag. On πλήμνη s. v. -- 3. πλή-ρης `full' (IA.); as 1. member e.g. πληρο-φορέω ` fulfill' (Ctes., LXX, NT, pap.); πληρό-της f. `fullness' (Plu.), πληρ-όω, very often w. prefix, e.g. ἀνα-, ἐκ-, ἀπο-, συν-, `to make full, to (ful)fill, to finish, to pay fully' (IA.) with - ωμα ( ἀνα-, συν- a.o.) n. `filling, filling piece, full number, full payment, (full) crew' (IA.), - ωσις ( ἀνα-, ἐκ- u.a.) f. `accomplishment, complement, satisfaction' (IA.; Holt Les noms d'action en - σις 128), - ωτής ( ἐκ-, ἀπο-) m. `finisher, executor, collector' (Att.), - ωτικός ( ἀνα-, συν- a.o.) `fulfilling, completing' (Epicur., medic. a. o.). -- 4. πλῆ-θος n. `fulness, mass (of people), herd' (Il., Dor., Arc.); often as 2. member, e.g. παμ-πληθής `consisting of a whole mass, very numerous' (Att.); -θᾱ f. `id.' (Locr., Boeot.); -θύ̄ς, - θύος f. `id.' (Ion. Cret. Locr. hell.; Bechtel Dial. 2, 791f., also Ruijgh L'élém. ach. 110 against Leumann Hom. Wörter 294 f.) with - θύω `to be full, to become full, increase', - θύνομαι, - θύνω `to belong to the mass, to agree with it, to augment oneself; to make full, to augment' (A., Arist., LXX, NT); from it - θυσμός m. `increase' (Procl., Simp.), - θυντικός `plural' (Gramm. a.o.); 5. πληθ-ώρα, Ion. -η f. `fulness', rnedic. `plethora, full-blooded' (Ion. hell.; on the secondary barytonesis Wackernagel-Debrunner Phil. 95, 181 f.) with - ωριάω `suffer from p.'. - ωρικός `plethoric' (Gal.), - ωρέω `to be full' (Suid.).Etymology: The sigmatic aorist 3. sg. ἔ-πλησ-ε is (except for the -ε) identical with Skt. á-prās: IE *é-pleh₁s-t; with 1. pl. pres. πίμ-πλα-μεν agrees also, setting aside the secondary nasalisation of the present, Skt. pi-pr̥-más: IE *pi-pl̥-mé(s). Also 3. sg. πίμ-πλη-σι has a non-Gr. agreement, in Av. ham-pā-frāi-ti `fills up' over against Skt. pí-par-ti from IE * pi-pel-ti. Both in Greek and in Iran. came in sing. the langvocalic full grade plē- after other forms (e.g. the aor. *é-plēs-) for the prob. older Skt. pí-par-ti. After the pattern of τίθημι: τίθεμεν one made sometimes forms like ptc. pl. f. πιμπλεῖσαι (Hes.: τιθεῖσαι). With πέ-πλη-θ-α cf. still Skt. pa-prā́[u] (on θ below). -- The r-suffix in πλή-ρης (for older *πλη-ρο-ς? Schwyzer 513) is both in Arm. li-r `fullness' (from * plē-r-i-) and in Lat. plē-rus `for the greater part', plērī-que `most' (s. W.-Hofmann s. v.) attested. Also πλέως from *πλῆος (= Hom. πλεῖος), *πλη-(ι)ος can be equated with Arm. li `full' (better then li from * plē-tos = Lat. - plētus a.o.). The m-suffix in πλή-μη, - μα seems also in Lat. plēminābantur replēbantur (Gloss.; from * plēmen = πλῆμα) to be represented. -- Like πλῆ-θος: πλή-θω, πέ-πλη-θα also βρῖ-θος: βρί-θω: βέ-βρι-θα (s. v. and Schwyzer 511 a. 703); with πλῆθος, -θύ̄ς (on which Schwyzer 463f. and Frisk Eranos 43, 221) one compares Lat. plēbēs from IE *plēdhu̯ēs (cf. W.-Hofmann s. v.); well-argued doubts in Ernout-Meillet s. v. -- Further details w. rich lit. in WP. 2, 63f., Pok. 799f., W.-Hofmann s. pleō, Mayrhofer s. píparti1; older lit. also in Bq. On the Greek form still Schwyzer 689. -- Cf. πολύς, πλείων, πλήμνη.Page in Frisk: 2,537-538Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πίμπλημι

3 κόρυς
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `helmet' (Il.);Other forms: κόρυρ θριγκός H. (Lac.).Compounds: Compp. κορυθ-άϊξ `shaking the helmet' (Χ 132; cf. on ἀΐσσω), - αἰόλος `id.', mostly of Hector (Il., A. R.; accent after Hdn., Eust. with codd. Ven.; so conncted with αἰόλλω; cf. Frisk Eranos 38, 39 w. n. 2, also Bechtel Lex. s. v.), κορυθήκη f. `helm-case' (Delos IIa; haplology for κορυθο-θ.); τρί-κορυς `with triple plume' (E. Ba. 123, lyr.), also τρι-κόρυθος `id.' (E. Or. 1480); χαλκο-, ἱππο-κορυστής `with bronze resp. redhaired helmet' (Il.; - της metr. enlarging, s. Frisk l. c.).Derivatives: 1. Diminut. κορύθιον (Gloss.). 2. κορυστής m. `helm-bearer' (Il.). 3. κόρυθος εἷς τις τῶν τροχίλων, περικεφαλαία H.; to Κόρυ(ν)θος as surn. of Apollon s. below 4. κορύθων ἀλεκτρυών H. 5. κορυθάλη, - αλίς = εἰρεσιώνη, `maypole(?)' (EM) with Κορυθαλία surn. of Artemis near Sparta (Polem. Hist., H.; s. Nilsson Gr. Rel. 1, 123 a. 490), also = κορυθάλη (H., Gloss.); with κορυθαλίστριαι αἱ χορεύουσαι τῃ̃ Κορυθαλίᾳ θεᾳ̃ H. (after the fem. in -( ί)στρια; vgl. Chantraine Formation 106). 6. Denomin. verb κορύσσω, - ομαι, aor. κορύσσασθαι (Il.), κορύξασθαι (Ath. 3, 127a; also Hp. Ep. 17?), ptc. perf. κεκορυθμένος (Il.; Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 434), verbal adj. κορυστός `heaped up', of full measure (Attica; κορυ\<σ\> τόν ἐπίμεστον H.), prop. `take a helmet', metaph. `raise high, rise', also in gen. `arm oneself' (Il.; Leumann Hom. Wörter 210, Erbse Herm. 81, 171). - Uncertain remains the judgement of Κόρυ(ν)θος surn. of Apollon in Messenia (inscr., Paus. 4, 34, 7); cf. v. Wilamowitz Glaube 1, 106 w. n. 3, Hitzig-Blümner ad loc.); κορυνθεύς κόφινος, κάλαθος. ἀλεκτρυών (H.; cf. κορύθων ab.). - On κόρυς with derivv. Trümpy Fachausdrücke 40ff., Gray Class. Quart. 41, 114ff.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Mostly connected with κέρας, first to the old u-stem in κερα(Ϝ)-ός (s. v.); but the differences of meaning and the morphological details are not well explained; improbable. Chantraine Mélanges Glotz 165ff. considers therefore for κόρυς Mediterraneann origin (in the framework of the soc. `protidg. Schicht'); not to κορυφή, κόρυμβος, κόρυδος, κορύνη. The forms κορυδ-ών, - αλ(λ)-ος point to a Pre-Greek word (Fur. 195).Page in Frisk: 1,925-926Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κόρυς

4 μέρμις
μέρμις, -ῑθοςGrammatical information: f.Meaning: `band, string' (κ 23, D. S. 3, 21), dat. pl. - θαις (Agatharch. 47); acc. sg. - θον (H.), nom. - θος (Zonar.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Formation like ἕλμις ( μέρμινθα v. l. D. S. l. c. like ἕλμινθος etc.), ὄρνις γέλγις a. o. (Schwyzer 510, Chantraine 366). Further analysis unknown; a suffixal - μι- (with θ-enlargement) is possible; broken reduplication may be considered. A primary verb mer- `twist, bind' (WP. 2, 272 a. Pok. 733) is nowhere attested; cognates have been supposed in μηρύω as well as in βρόχος and μάραθ(ρ)ον (s. vv.), both without further confirmation. For foreign (Pre-Greek) origin Chantraine l.c., Deroy Glotta 35, 191ff. Fur. 289 compares μήρινθος, σμήρινθος `string, thread' and further σμῆριγξ `hair', σμήριγγες πλεκταί, σειραί, βόστρυχοι H.Page in Frisk: 2,211Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μέρμις

5 στῆθος
Grammatical information: n.Meaning: `male or female breast', also as seat of feelings etc. "heart" (Il.), metaph. `ball of the hand, foot' (medic.), `sandbank' (Plb. a.o.).Other forms: Often pl. - εα, -η.Compounds: Rare compp., e.g. στηθό-δεσμος, - ίς, - ία, -η `breast-band' (Poll., LXX, hell. pap. a.o.), μεγαλό-, μικρό-στηθος `with wide resp. narrow chest' (Mnesith. ap. Orib.; only sup.).Derivatives: 1. Dimin. στηθ-ίον (Alex., Arist. a.o.), - ίδιον (Phryn.), - ύνιον (middl. com., LXX; cf. χελύνιον `lip, jawbone etc.'). 2. - αῖον `breastwork' (sch.). 3. also - ίας ὄρνις ποιός H.? 4. - ικός (Arist.), - ιαῖος (inscr. IVp, sch.) `belonging to the breast'. 5. - ιστήρ m. `breast-plate of a horse's harness' (gloss.; cf. βραχιονιστήρ a.o.).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: As στῆθος is also Dor. and Aeol. (στᾱ̃θος [Sicyon] with ᾱ from η; Thumb-Kieckers Hb. 1, 129), the connection with στῆ-ναι (Curtius 211; cf. Chantraine Form. 421, also Benveniste Origines 200) must be given up. Origin unclear. The similarity with στήνιον στῆθος H. (to Arm. stin, Skt. stána m. `female breast' a.o.) is hardly accidental. Suppositions on it in WP. 2, 663 and Pok. 990 (for *τῆθος from *θῆ-θος to θῆσθαι with στ- after στήνιον?); by Risch 73 ( στήνιον: στῆθος approx. like Lat. plēnus : πλῆθος).Page in Frisk: 2,795Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > στῆθος
