Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `sting' (Pi.).Other forms: aor. κένσαι (Ψ 337), κεντῆσαι (Hp., κέντᾱσα Theoc. 19, 1), pass. κεντηθῆναι (Arist.) with κεντηθήσομαι (Hdt.), κεντήσω (S.), κεκέντημαι (Hp.),Derivatives: 1. κένσαι for *κέντ-σαι (Schwyzer 287) points to κεντ- (present or aorist?; s. below) of which the dental before dental gave κεσ-. Thus κεσ-τός (\< *κεντ-τός) `stitched' (ep.; Ammann Μνήμης χάριν 1, 17); κέσ-τρον `pointed iron ' (Plin.) with κεστρωτός and κέστρωσις (H.; *κεστρόω), κέσ-τρος `kind of arrow etc.' (Plb., D. H., H.) with dimin. κεστρίον (Attica) and κέστρειον `stock of arrows (?)' (Delos IIIa); κέσ-τρα f. `sharp hammer, arrow' (S., Ph. Bel., Hero), also a fishname = σφύραινα (Ar.; after te form of the body, Strömberg Fischnamen 35); here κεστρεύς `mullet' (IA.; Bosshardt Die Nom. auf - ευς 51) and κεστρῖνος, - ινίσκος `id.' (Com.). - 2. Through reshaping after κεντ-έω (not with ρο-suffix as Fraenkel KZ 42, 118 n. 1) rose κέντρον `sting', as geometrical term. techn. `resting bone of a compass, center of a cirkel' (Il.), with many compounds and derivv., e. g. κεντρ-ηνεκής `driven by the sting' (Il.; cf. with diff. function δουρ-, ποδ-ηνεκής); subst. κέντρων s. v.; adj. like κεντρικός, κεντρώδης, κεντρήεις; fish- and plant names as κεντρίνης, κεντρίσκος, κεντρίτης (Strömberg Fischnamen 47, Redard Les noms grecs en - της 83, 111); denomin. verbs κεντρόω `with a sting, sting' (IA), κεντρίζω `sting' (X.); from κέντρον as backformation κέντωρ m. `goader, driver' (Il., AP; Fraenkel Glotta 2, 32). - 3. From κεντέω ( κεντῆ-σαι, - σω): κέντημα `the sting, the mosaic' (Arist., inscr. Smyrna [Rom. Emp.]), κεντητής `mosaic-worker' ( Edict. Diocl.), κεντητήριον `picker' (Luc.), κεντητικός `stingy' (Thphr.), κεντητός `stitched, with mosaic' (Epikt., pap.). - 4. With old ablaut κοντός m. "the stinger", `pole, crutch, staf to drive on cattle' (ι 487; LW [loanword] Lat. contus with percontor) with κοντά-κιον, - άριον, - ίλος, - ωτός a. o.; here κοντός `short' (Adam.) from κοντο-μάχος, - βόλος, - βολέω, where κοντός was taken as `short'; thus in κοντο-πορεία (Plb.), s. Hatzidakis Festschrift Kretschmer 35ff.Origin: IE [Indo-European] [567] *ḱent- `sting'Etymology: To the sigmatic aorist κένσαι \< *κέντ-σαι was after unknown example a present κεντ-έω created (cf. Schwyzer 706), to which came κεντῆ-σαι, κεντή-σω etc. - Other languages have only isolated nominal formations: OHG hantag `pointed', deriv. from PGm. * handa- (formally = κοντός), Latv. sīts `hunting spear' (= Lith. *šiñtas \< IE. *ḱentos- n.?), and some Celtic words, e. g. Bret. kentr `spur', Welsh cethr `nail', but these are all prob. loans from Lat. centrum. - See W.-Hofmann 2, 423, Pok. 567.Page in Frisk: 1,820-821Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κεντέω

"bather", `who loves bathing' (Arist., M. Ant.). - 5. λοῦσις ` bathing, washing' (late pap., inscr.), ἀπόλουσις `washing' (Pl.). - 6. λοῦμα n. `stream' (Sardes); prob also λούματα (cod. ἀούματα) τὰ τῶν πτισσομένων κριθῶν ἄχυρα Κύπριοι H.; cf. ἀπόλουμα = ἀποκάθαρμα (sch., Eust.); or because the chaff before feeding was washed away in water?; diff. Bechtel Dial. 1, 451 (with Hoffmann Dial. 1, 121). -7. λουτιάω `want to bathe' (Luc. Lex. 2; after ἐμετ-ιάω: ἐμέω a. o.).Origin: IE [Indo-European] [692] *leu̯h₃- `wash, bathe'Etymology: The aorist λο(Ϝ)έ-σαι agrees with κορέ-σαι, στορέ-σαι; the rare present λο(Ϝ)έ-ω can be explained as innovation (cf. Specht KZ 59, 61). From λο(Ϝ)έσαι by contraction could arise λοῦσαι; to this again λούω. In Hom. the uncontracted forms can be inserted, e.g. λόεσεν etc. for λοῦσεν etc., also λοέεσθαι for λούεσθαι (Z 508 = O 265). Both λοῦσαι etc. and the isolated λό', λόον, λόεσθαι are understandable from (thematic) λό(Ϝ)-ω; the last forms however, can also be due to hyphairesis (cf. Schwyzer 252 f.). Also λοῦσθαι, λοῦνται, λούμενος admit basic forms like *λόϜ-εσθαι *λόϜ-ονται, *λοϜ-όμενος; but rhey are at the same time explainable from λο(Ϝ)έεσ-θαι, λο(Ϝ)έονται, λο(Ϝ)εόμενος. Further details in Schwyzer 682, Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 34, 347, 374, Risch ̨ 117. An immediate agreement to monosyll. thematic λό(Ϝ)ω appears in Lat. lav-ō, lav-ere (from * lov-; cf. Szemerényi KZ 70, 57 f.); to disyll. λο(Ϝ)έ-σαι may at the same time disyll. lavā-re (if the length is secondary) correspond (IE *leu̯h₃-). Wether also Arm. loganam, aor. logac̣ay `bathe oneself' has a disyllabic root, remains uncertain given the productivity of the Arm. verbs in - anam. From the general o-vowel deviate Myc. rewotorokowo and rewoterejo; their connection with λοετρόν has been explained from metathesis of * lewo-. Also the Celtic and Germanic nominal derivv. show the same vocalisation, e.g. Gaul. lautro `bathing place', OIr. lōathar `basin', OWNo. lauđr n. `lye, (soap)foam', OE lēaÞor `soap-foam', which can go back on IE * louh₃-tro- and can be identical with λο(Ϝ)ετρόν. - Hitt. lah̯(h̯)uu̯āi-'pour', since Sturtevant connected with λούω (s. Friedrich Wb.), is formally unclear (on expects *leh₂\/₃-u-). - Further forms in Bq, WP. 2, 441, Pok. 692, W.-Hofmann s. lavō.Page in Frisk: 2,138-139Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > λούω

(IA.); ὁρκωμό-της, s. ὅρκος.Etymology: With ὀμό-σαι agrees in formation ἀρό-σαι `plough'; thus the disyllabic ὀλέ-σαι στορέ-σαι a.o. with different vowel; on ὀμο- rests the future ὀμό[σ]-ομαι, to which analogically ὀμεῖται was created for *ὀμοῦται (Schwyzer 784 n. 3; diff. Sánchez Ruipérez Emer. 18, 406 f.; see also Wackernagel Unt. 3f. and Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 62 a. 451). The present ὄμνυμι like ὄλλυμι etc. (Schwyzer 363); the perfect is clearly innovated. The further history of the word remains unclear, as there is no convincing etymology. -- Since Aufrecht RhM 40, 160 one connects generally ὄμνυμι, ὀμόσαι with the Skt. disyllabic athem. root-present ámī-ti about `press, urge' (after Neisser BB 30, 299ff., Renou JournAs. 1939, 183 f., Benveniste Revue de l'hist. des relig. 134, 81 ff. a.o. however `seize with force'), beside which sometimes `assure urgently' (also `swear'?) v. t. (- ος m.) `spittle' (Hp., Arist.), from which - αλώδης `spittle-like', - αλίζω, - ελίζω `to secrete spittle' with - αλισμός (- ελ-) m. (Hp.).Origin: IE [Indo-European] [999] *spi̯(e)uH- `spew, spit'Etymology: Beside the present πτύ̄-ω with long vowel (Schwyzer 686, Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 373) there is the aorist πτῠ́-σαι with short vowel as in ἐρῠ́-σαι, ἀρῠ́-σαι a.o.; after this πτῠ́-σις and with anorganic σ πτύσ-μα, - μός a.o. -- Onomatop. expression, found in several languages in somewhat varying form: Lat. spuō, Germ., e.g. Goth. speiwan, Lith. spiáu-ju, -ti (from * spieuH-?), and in Skt. (niḥ-)ṣṭhī́vati (spiHu̯-? with t-v dissimilated from p-v); without s- as πτύω: CS pljujǫ, plǰьvati (from *pi̯u-\/pi̯uu̯-?), Arm. t`uk` `spittle' with t`k`-anem `spew, spit'; with diff. sequence of sounds Alb. pshtyj (Mann Lang. 26, 387). Greek πτ- can, if old, agree with Arm. t` ; if for older πι̯- OCS plǰujǫ and Lith. spiáuju can be compared. On the attempts to reduce the deviating forms to one preform, cf. Well-founded objections against assuming a strict base-form for this popular-expressive expression in Persson Beitr. 1, 270 and Ernout-Meillet s. spuō. -- Greek too presents several variants: ἀπο-, ἐκ-πῡ-τίζω (Hp., com., Arist.; simplex πυτιζω only EM), prob. expressively enlarged with dissimilation (Lat. LW [loanword] pytissāre, cf. Leumann Kl. Schr. 159 w. n.1); Dor. ἐπι-φθύσδω = ἐπιπτύω (Theoc.); ψύττει πτύει and σίαι πτύσαι.
