1 Quantities
Note the use of en (of it or of them) in the following examples. This word must be included when the thing you are talking about is not expressed (the French says literally there is of it a lot, there is of it two kilos, I have of them a lot etc.). However, en is not needed when the commodity is specified e.g. there is a lot of butter = il y a beaucoup de beurre.how much is there?= combien y en a-t-il?there’s a lot= il y en a beaucoup*there’s not much= il n’y en a pas beaucoupthere’s two kilos= il y en a deux kiloshow much sugar have you got?= combien de sucre as-tu?I’ve got a lot= j’en ai beaucoupI’ve not got much= je n’en ai pas beaucoupI’ve got two kilos= j’en ai deux kiloshow many are there?= combien y en a-t-il?there are a lot= il y en a beaucoupthere aren’t many= il n’y en a pas beaucoupthere are twenty= il y en a vingthow many apples have you?= combien de pommes as-tu? or tu as combien de pommes?I’ve got a lot= j’en ai beaucoupI haven’t many= je n’en ai pas beaucoupI’ve got twenty= j’en ai vingtA has got more than B= A en a plus que BA has got more money than B= A a plus d’argent que Bmuch more than= beaucoup plus quea little more than= un peu plus queA has got more apples than B= A a plus de pommes que Bmany more apples than B= beaucoup plus de pommes que Ba few more apples than B= quelques pommes de plus que Ba few more people than yesterday= quelques personnes de plus qu’hierB has got less money than A= B a moins d’argent que AB has got less than A= B en a moins que Amuch less than= beaucoup moins quea little less than= un peu moins queB has got fewer than A= B en a moins que AB has got fewer apples than A= B a moins de pommes que Amany fewer than= beaucoup moins queRelative quantitieshow many are there to the kilo?= combien y en a-t-il au kilo?there are ten to the kilo= il y en a dix au kiloyou can count six to the kilo= il faut en compter six au kilohow many do you get for ten francs?= combien peut-on en avoir pour dix francs?you get five for ten francs= il y en a cinq pour dix francshow much does it cost a litre?= combien coûte le litre?it costs £5 a litre= ça coûte cinq livres le litrehow much do apples cost a kilo?= combien coûte le kilo de pommes?apples cost ten francs a kilo= les pommes coûtent dix francs le kilohow much does it cost a metre?= combien coûte le mètre?how much does your car do to the gallon?= combien consomme votre voiture?it does 28 miles to the gallon= elle fait dix litres aux cent(Note that the French calculate petrol consumption in litres per 100 km. To convert mpg to litres per 100 km and vice versa, simply divide 280 by the known figure.)how many glasses do you get to the bottle?= combien y a-t-il de verres par bouteille?you get six glasses to the bottle= il y a six verres par bouteille -
2 system of physical quantities

system of quantities
set of quantities together with a set of non-contradictory equations relating those quantities
NOTE – Ordinal quantities, such as Rockwell C hardness, are usually not considered to be part of a system of quantities because they are related to other quantities through empirical relations only. Nominal properties, such as colour of light, are not quantities and hence are not part of a system of quantities.

13 Weber, Wilhelm Eduard
SUBJECT AREA: Electricity[br]b. 24 October 1804 Wittenberg, Germanyd. 23 June 1891 Göttingen, Germany[br]German physicist, the founder of precise measurement of electrical quantities.[br]Weber began scientific experiments at an early age and entered the University of Halle, where he came under the influence of J.S.C.Schweigger, inventor of the galvanometer. Completing his education with a dissertation on the theory of organ pipes and making important contributions to the science of acoustics, he was awarded a lectureship and later an assistant professorship at Halle. Weber was offered the Chair of Physics at Göttingen in 1831 and jointly with Gauss began investigations into the precision measurement of magnetic quantities. In 1841 he invented the electrodynamometer type of electrical measuring instrument. This was a development of the galvanometer in which, instead of a needle, a small coil was suspended within an outer coil. A current flowing through both coils tended to turn the inner coil, the sine of the angle through which the suspending wires were twisted being proportional to the square of the strength of the current. A variation of the electrodynamometer was capable of measuring directly the power in electrical circuits. The introduction by Weber of a system of absolute units for the measurement of electrical quantities was a most important step in electrical science. He had a considerable influence on the British Association committees on electrical standards organized in 1861 to promote a coherent system of electrical units. Weber's ideas also led him to define elementary electric particles, ascribing mass and charge to them. His name was used for a time before 1883 as the unit of electric current, until the name "ampere" was proposed by Helmholtz. Since 1948 the term "weber" has been used for the SI unit of magnetic flux.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsFRS 1850. 16 Alleyne, Sir John Gay Newton
SUBJECT AREA: Metallurgy[br]b. 8 September 1820 Barbadosd. 20 February 1912 Falmouth, Cornwall, England[br]English iron and steel manufacturer, inventor of the reversing rolling mill.[br]Alleyne was the heir to a baronetcy created in 1769, which he succeeded to on the death of his father in 1870. He was educated at Harrow and at Bonn University, and from 1843 to 1851 he was Warden at Dulwich College, to the founder of which the family claimed to be related.Alleyne's business career began with a short spell in the sugar industry at Barbados, but he returned to England to enter Butterley Iron Works Company, where he remained for many years. He was at first concerned with the production of rolled-iron girders for floors, especially for fireproof flooring, and deck beams for iron ships. The demand for large sections exceeded the capacity of the small mills then in use at Butterley, so Alleyne introduced the welding of T-sections to form the required H-sections.In 1861 Alleyne patented a mechanical traverser for moving ingots in front of and behind a rolling mill, enabling one person to manipulate large pieces. In 1870 he introduced his major innovation, the two-high reversing mill, which enabled the metal to be passed back and forth between the rolls until it assumed the required size and shape. The mill had two steam engines, which supplied the motion in opposite directions. These two inventions produced considerable economies in time and effort in handling the metal and enabled much heavier pieces to be processed.During Alleyne's regime, the Butterley Company secured some notable contracts, such as the roof of St Paneras Station, London, in 1868, with the then-unparalleled span of 240 ft (73 m). The manufacture and erection of this awe-inspiring structure was a tribute to Alleyne's abilities. In 1872 he masterminded the design and construction of the large railway bridge over the Old Maas at Dordrecht, Holland. Alleyne also devised a method of determining small quantities of phosphorus in iron and steel by means of the spectroscope. In his spare time he was a skilled astronomical observer and metalworker in his private workshop.[br]Bibliography1875, "The estimation of small quantities of phosphorus in iron and steel by spectrum analysis", Journal of the Iron and Steel Institute: 62.Further ReadingObituary, 1912, Journal of the Iron and Steel Institute: 406–8.LRDBiographical history of technology > Alleyne, Sir John Gay Newton

coherent system of units
system of units, based on a given system of quantities, in which the unit of measurement for each derived quantity is a coherent derived unit
NOTE 1 – A system of units can be coherent only with respect to a system of quantities and the adopted base units.
NOTE 2 – For a coherent system of units, numerical value equations have the same form, including numerical factors, as the corresponding quantity equations.
NOTE 3 – An example of coherent system of units is the set of coherent SI units with the relations between them.
