  • 43 ἡδύς

    Grammatical information: adj.
    Meaning: `sweet, tasteful, pleasant, pleasing' (Il.);
Other forms: Dor. ἁδύς, El. etc. Ϝαδύς
Compounds: very often as 1. member, e. g. ἡδυ-επής `with sweet words, sounding pleasant' (Il.); as 2. member - ηδής, s. ἥδομαι. On ἡδίων (rare a. late ἡδύτερος), ἥδιστος s. Seiler Steigerungsformen 57f.
Derivatives: ἥδυμος `sweet, comforting', dactylic variant of ἡδύς, of ὕπνος (Il.; in Hom. always wrongly νήδυμος, s. Bechtel Lex. s. v., Leumann Hom. Wörter 44f.), also Α῝δυμος as PN; cf. ἔτυμος and Schwyzer 494, Chantraine Formation 151f.; ἡδύλος `id.', hypocoristic enlargement (A. D., EM) with ἡδυλίζω `flatter, tempt' (Men.), ἡδυλίσαι συνουσιάσαι, ἡδυλισμός συνουσία H.; also as PN with ` Ηδυλίνη (Attica IVa), ` Ηδύλειος (Delos IIIa); further ` Ηδυτώ (Attica Va; after Έρατώ a. o.), ` Ηδάριον (Rhodes; after the dimin. in - άριον). Backformation ἦδος `vinegar' (Ath.), cf. γᾶδος (= Ϝ-) γάλα, ἄλλοι ὄξος H., on the meaning Schwyzer Festschrift Kretschmer 244ff.; also Pisani KZ 68, 176f. (where unclear Arm. k`ac̣ax `vinegar' is discussed). Denomin. verb ἡδύνω `sweeten, make tasteful, spice' (IA.) with ἥδυσμα, - μάτιον `spice' (Ion.-Att.), ἡδυσμός, ἡδυν-τός, - τικός, - τήρ `spiced etc.' (also from salt).
    Origin: IE [Indo-European] [1039] * sueh₂d- `sweet'
Etymology: Old word for `sweet', identical with Skt. svādú-, Gaul. Suadu-rīx, - genus, IE *sueh₂dú-s; also Lat. suāvis, Germ., e. g. OHG suozi, OE. swēte `sweet'. The full grade perhaps from the comparative ἡδίων, Skt. svā́dīyas- (also ἥδιστος = svā́diṣṭha-). The zero grade in Lith. súdyti `spice, salt', Skt. sūdáyati, perf. pl. su-ṣūd-imá `make tasteful'. - Forms in W.-Hofmann s. suāvis. S. also ἥδομαι, ἁνδάνω.

  • 44 ἰσχνός

    Grammatical information: adj.
Meaning: `dry, arid, languishing, lean' (IA).
Compounds: Compp., e. g. ἰσχνό-φωνος `with dry (thin) voice' (Hdt., Hp., Arist.), often connected with ἴσχω (v. l. ἰσχό-φωνος; cf. below on ἰσχναίνω) and understood as `with halting voice'; ἔν-ισχνος `a little dry' (Nic. Al. 147; cf. Strömberg Prefix Studies 128).
Derivatives: ἰσχνότης `dryness etc.' (Hp., Arist.); denomin. verbs: 1. ἰσχναίνω, also with prefix as κατ-, ἀπ-, `dry up, make lean' (IA) with ἰσχνασία, - ίη `dried up position, leanness' (Hp., Arist.; on the formation Schwyzer 469), ἰσχνασμός (Hp.), ἴσχνανσις (Paul. Aeg.) `drying up', ἰσχναντικός `drying up, becoming lean' (Arist.); 2. ἰσχνόομαι, - όω, also with ἀπ-, ἐξ- a. o., `get, make dry' (Hp., Arist.) with ἴσχνωσις, - ωτικός (medic. a. o.). - Beside it ἰσχαλέος `dry, barren' (τ 233, Man.) and ἰσχάς, - άδος f. `dried fig' (Com., Arist.) with ἰσχαδο-πώλης, ἰσχάδιον a. o. (Com.).
    Origin: XX [etym. unknown]
Etymology: ἰσχ-ν-ός, ἰσχ-αλ-έος does not show old variation ν: λ, which is no IE category ( σμερδνός: σμερδαλέος does exist, of course, Schwyzer 484, Chantraine Formation 253). One might have expected a verb ἰσχαίνω ( κερδαλέος: κερδαίνω), which is often found as v. l., but it may also be a mix with ἰσχάνω `hold back'. A related u-stem has been assumed in Av. hišku-, Celt., e. g. MIr. sesc `dry', IE * si-sk-u(-o)-. (One uspposed for ἰσχνός an ad hoc basis * si-sk-sno- (Brugmann Grundr.2 2: 1, 475); from an s-stem? - Unclear is the basis of ἰσχάς; after οἰνάς, κοτινάς, φυτάς, μυρτάς etc. one would suppose a noun. Further suggestions (IE sek- `dry up') in Bq, Pok. 894f., W.-Hofmann s. siccus. - Not with Osthoff IF 27, 181ff. to Lat. vēscus `emaciated, lean' (to vēscor, s. W.-Hofmann s. v.).

  • 45 νόσος

    Grammatical information: f.
Meaning: `illness, disease', metaph. `distress, need' (Il.).
Other forms: ep. Ion. νοῦσος (s. below).
Compounds: Compp., e.g. νοσο-ποιέω `cause disease' (Hp.), ἐπί-νοσος `a prey of disease, unhealthy' (Hp., Arist.; Strömberg Prefix Studies 85).
Derivatives: A. Adj.: 1. νοσερός `ill, unhealthy' (Hp., E.. Arist.); 2. νοσηρός `id.' (Hp., X.; ὑγιηρός Pi., Ion.) with νοσήριον (H. s. κηρέσιον; for νοσητήριον or νοσηρόν?); 3. νοσηλός `ill, sickly' (Hp.; rather from νοσέω, cf. Chantraine Form. 241) with νοσήλια n. pl. `sick-diet' (Opp.), νοσηλεύω, - ομαι `care for a patient, be ill' (Isoc., J.), νοσηλεία f. `nursing, morbidity' (S., J., Plu.); 4. νοσακερός `id.' (Arist.; after Poll. 3, 105 ἐσχάτως κωμικόν; on ακ-enlargement Frisk Nom. 62ff.); 5. νοσώδης `ill, unhealthy' (Hp., Att.); 6. Νόσιος surn. of Ζεύς (Miletos VI--Va). -- B. Verbs: 1. νοσέω `be ill' (Att., also Ion.) with νόσημα n. `illness' (IA.), with νοσημάτιον dimin. (Ar.), - τικός, *τώδης `sickly' (Arist.); 2. νοσεύομαι `be sickly' with νόσευμα `illness' (Hp.); 3. νοσάζομαι, `be, make ill', νοσίζω `make ill' (Arist., Gal.). -- C. Substant. 1. νόσανσις f. `getting ill' (Arist.: ὑγίανσις; *νοσαίνω); 2. unclear νοσίμη (leg. - ήμη?) = νόσημα (Theognost.).
    Origin: XX [etym. unknown]
Etymology: From νόσος: νοῦσος we conclude to *νόσϜος (Schulze Q. 115 with Aufrecht KZ 1, 120). Beside the also in Ionic younger νοσέω, ep. νοῦσος can also be understood as a false rewriting of ΝΟΣΟΣ for *νόσσος; then the ep. form must have been taken over by Hdt. and Hp. Schwyzer 227 a. 308, cf. Wackernagel Unt. 86; s. also Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 162 and Lejeune Traité de phon. 117. -- Several explanations, which have at best hypothetic value, as Brugmann Sächs. Ges. Ber. 1897, 29ff. and IF 28, 363ff., Solmsen BphW 1906, 754f. (all noted by Bq; s. also WP. 2, 333). - The word could well be Pre-Greek (note the retained - σ-; not in Fur.)
