17 -after, afterwards o later?-
Nota d'usoQuando dopo è usato come preposizione, il suo equivalente è “after”: Dopo cena andremo fuori, after dinner we'll go out. Se invece dopo è usato come avverbio, con il significato di “in seguito”, si può tradurre con “after that” o “afterwards”: Martedì mattina sono andato dal dentista. Dopo ho pranzato con Lucia, on Tuesday morning I went to the dentist. After that I had lunch with Lucia (non After I had lunch with Lucia). Quando dopo significa “più tardi”, corrisponde spesso a “later” o “later on”: Ti chiamo dopo, I'll call you later; Ne possiamo parlare dopo, we can talk about it later on (o aftewards). -
18 -appuntamento e appointment-
Nota d'usoAppuntamento corrisponde ad “appointment” solo in contesti lavorativi o in caso di visite mediche: Ho un appuntamento dal dentista alle 9, I have an appointment at the dentist's at 9. Quando invece si tratta di un appuntamento romantico, si usa la parola “date”: È vero che hai un appuntamento con Chiara?, is it true that you've got a date with Chiara? Nel caso di appuntamenti con amici o simili, si ricorre spesso a “to meet”: Abbiamo appuntamento davanti al bar, we're meeting in front of the bar. -
19 -what about?-
Nota d'usoL'espressione what about può essere seguita da un sostantivo o da un verbo in -ing, con significati leggermente diversi.● what about + sostantivo è usato per chiedere informazioni o chiarimenti su qualcuno o qualcosa: What about that lovely dentist she was seeing?, cos'è successo a quel dentista simpatico con cui usciva?● what about + verbo in -ing è usato per fare proposte o lanciare un'idea: What about going to the theatre on Saturday?, che ne dici di andare a teatro sabato? -
