6 -arrivare-
Davanti a un nome di città o nazione arrivare a si traduce in genere con to arrive in: Arrivammo a Roma in treno, we arrived in Rome by train; Quando siete arrivati in Italia?, when did you arrive in Italy?Negli altri casi, anche quelli figurati, la preposizione usata di norma è at: Arriveremo all'aeroporto [al museo] fra circa un'ora, we will arrive at the airport [at the museum] in about an hour; Siete arrivati a una decisione?, have you arrived at a decision? -
7 -good o goods?-
Nota d'usoIl sostantivo merce corrisponde all'inglese “goods” (sempre al plurale). Bisogna quindi fare attenzione a concordare correttamente il verbo al plurale: La merce è arrivata, the goods have arrived (non the good has arrived). -
8 -I think so-
La locuzione corretta è I think so: Has the post arrived yet? I think so, è arrivata la posta? Penso di sì. La forma negativa penso di no corrisponde a I don't think so, o, più formalmente, I think not. In alternativa, si può utilizzare l'ausiliare presente nella domanda: Has the post arrived yet? I think it has, è arrivata la posta? Penso di sì; Has she seen the picture? I don't think she has, ha visto la foto? Penso di no. -
9 -no sooner-
Nota d'usoNo sooner significa “appena, non appena” e ha come correlativo than, non when: The duke had no sooner left the palace than the princess arrived, il duca aveva appena lasciato il palazzo, quando arrivò la principessa. No sooner had the duke left the palace than the princess arrived. -
10 -parcel o pack?-
