USAGE:(1.) Сравнительный оборот less... than обычно стоит после основного глагола, причем прилагательное less стоит перед определяемым существительным: I have less time than all of you у меня меньше времени, чем у вас всех. (2.) Русскому на пять (три, десять) страниц (книг, студентов) меньше соответствует конструкция с less без последующего существительного: five (three, ten) pages (books, students) less. B этом случае fewer не употребляется: the second edition contains 20 pages less than the first во втором издании на 20 страниц меньше, чем в первом. (3.) Русское словосочетание вдвое меньше в английском языке передается посредством конструкции с half: half as many для исчисляемых существительных и half as much для неисчисляемых: he has spent half as much time on it than I have он потратил вдвое меньше времени на это, чем я. Русское словосочетание "в три раза меньше, чем..." соответствует английскому three times less than...
