На этой стадии главным вмешательством Преминджера стала замена Лэрда Кригара, предполагавшегося на роль Лайдекера, на Клифтона Уэбба (в ту пору - театрального актера, практически не известного в мире кино). Он изменяет декорации и костюмы, меняет оператора Люсьена Бэллэрда на Джозефа Лашелла, нанимает молодого музыканта Дэйвида Рэксина, который пишет для фильма мелодию, позднее ставшую легендарной. Преминджер умело пользуется рамками и структурными элементами нуара (флэшбеки, закадровый комментарий), которые он идеально встраивает в свою вселенную. Образ Лоры обогащается за счет различий в характерах и взглядах 2 героев, которые восхищаются ею в равной степени, но каждый по-своему: декадентский цинизм, самовлюбленность и тщательно скрываемая уязвимость Лайдекера противопоставлена прагматизму и непрошибаемому реализму инспектора.Наконец, техника операторской работы - длинные проезды камеры, объединяющие и разделяющие героев, при помощи затейливых узоров позволяющие ощутить дистанцию между ними - и тонкая работа с актерами придают фильму поэтическую и трагическую ауры, без которых он не был бы столь совершенен. Все герои живут словно в закрытом сосуде под взглядами других людей и сами ищут эти взгляды, часто - чтобы изменить их в свою пользу. В то же время все они - одиночки и останутся таковыми, даже несмотря на поспешный хэппи-энд (надежда на союз Лоры и Макфёрсона), которым, казалось бы, завершается интрига. На самом деле, хэппи-энд должен в 1-ю очередь подчеркнуть трагизм и безысходность развязки: поражение Пигмалиона, не способного приблизиться к своей Галатее, которую он дважды безуспешно пытается уничтожить.Успех Лоры, как и ослепительное обаяние ее главной актрисы Джин Тирни, с годами не ослабевают.
