    Etymology: Together with its derivations σκύλλω is esp. known from the later colloquial language and in the metaph. meaning `pester etc.'. Through adaptation to σκῦλον the aor. σκῦλαι got the meaning of `harass, plunder' ( ἱερόν etc.). Similarly ( ἀπο-)σκύλαιο aor. opt. midd. 2. sg. of the hair and head `abrade, uncover' (Nic.), to which further ἔσκυλται ( κόμη) `is teared apart, tousled' (AP); from the older language only pres. σκύλλονται `they are (by the fishes) stripped of their flesh', of the drowned warriors (A. Pers. 577 [lyr.]) and he noun σκῠλο-δέψης; to this with metathesis ξύλλεσθαι = σκύλλεσθαι, συλᾶσθαι ( SIG 56, 3; Argos Va; cf. Schwyzer 329). -- Since long (s. Curtius 169, WP. 2, 591, Pok. 923f.) connected with the group of σκάλλω (s. v.), where υ in σκύλλω would be a reduced vowel (Schwyzer 351) [which is impossible].     Etymology: The above strongly productive group of words can because of its regular system and extension not be very old. On the other hand there is nothing in it, that could point to loans. So an inherited word of recent date with unknown prehistory and without helpful non-Greek agreements (quite doubtful Lat. [Umbr.] strebula pl. n. `the meat on the haunches of sacricial animals'; on this W.-Hofmann s. v.). A (popular) byform with β is maintained in στρεβλός (s. v.), στρόβιλος, στραβός [this is improbable to me] -- Through στρέφω a. cogn. older words for `turn etc.', e.g. εἰλέω, εἰλύω and σπερ- in σπεῖρα, σπάρτον etc. were partly pushed aside or replaced.

Farewell.’ εὖ πράσσειν thus expresses a fundamental feature in the reciprocity system that ran through Gr-Rom. society: recipients of a benefit ‘act correctly’ by reciprocating in some way); sim. IEph 4:2 and ISm 11:3 require some such rendering as do right. ἵνα εὖ σοι γένηται that you may prosper Eph 6:3 (cp.     ἦθος, ους, τό (Hom. et al.) a pattern of behavior or practice that is habitual or characteristic of a group or an individual, custom, usage, habit (so Hes., Hdt. et al.) τῆς ἁγνείας the habit of purity 1 Cl 21:7. τῆς φιλοξενίας 1:2. Pl. τὰ ἤθη habits, ἤθη χρηστά good habits (cp. Philo, Spec. Leg. 2, 104.—EpArist 290 and POxy 642 [II A.D.] ἦθος χρηστόν) 1 Cor 15:33 (φθείρουσιν ἤθ. χρ. ὁμιλίαι κακαί is a proverb, occurring in Menander’s comedy Thais [Fgm. 218 Kock, 187 Körte] and perh. as early as Eur. [PHib 7, 94—III B.C.; Socrates, HE 3, 6]. According to Diod S 12, 12, [3] 4 Charondas the lawgiver [V B.C.] champions the principle that good men would easily have their characters ruined by association with evil men [τὰ ἤθη πρὸς κακίαν]. In 16, 54, 4 it is said of a tyrant: πονηραῖς ὁμιλίαις διέφθειρε τὰ ἤθη τῶν ἀνθρώπων ‘he corrupted people’s morals through base speech’.—S. also χρηστός 3a.
