Спица. To put a spoke in someone's wheel — ставить кому-либо палки в колёса, не давать делать что-либо. Это английское выражение звучит довольно странно, т. к. колёса велосипедов уже имеют спицы. Здесь, однако, упоминаются времена, когда повозки имели сплошные колёса, без спиц. В то время the spoke назывался a pin (штифт), который вставлялся в отверстие колеса и выполнял роль тормоза. Слово spoke могло быть неправильным переводом голландского выражения, включающего слово spaak, означающего перекладину, брусок или палку.She had hoped to be out of the house by eight o'clock but I have hidden her shoes.
