21 casa grande
(Sp. model spelled same [kása] 'house' and [grande] 'large' < Latin granáis 'big')1) Carlisle: 1850. Referenced by Carlisle and Hendrickson as a large house.2) Clark: 1910s. On a Spanish-American ranch or hacienda, the owner's home. According to Adams, this is where "all the hands gathered for fun and frolic." Bentley notes that it was without exception painted white and generally had a large veranda along the entire front. He also indicates that it was the "hub of the universe" for the laborers of the ranch. Although this term was more common in earlier times, it continues to be widely recognized in the Southwest. Santamaría says that a servant or laborer of a ranch or hacienda refers to the owner's home as the casa grande or casa principal.3) Clark: 1840s. Clark glosses it as "an extensive pueblo in the Southwest." Not referenced in Spanish sources, but common in toponyms in the Southwest and Mexico: Casa Grande, Arizona, and Nuevo Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, for example. -

One rather fanciful theory traces its origin to the Mexican-American War of 1846-48 and the song "Green Grow the Rushes-oh", supposedly sung by the American troops. According to another theory it is a corruption of griego or "Greek", in the sense of anything foreign and unintelligible, as in the English expression "it's all Greek to me".* * *I- ga adjetivoa) (AmL fam & pey) gringo, foreign ( of or relating to a gringo II a))b) (Andes fam) ( rubio) fair-hairedII- ga masculino, femeninoa) (AmL fam & pey) ( extranjero) gringo, foreigner ( from a non-Spanish speaking country); ( norteamericano) Yank (colloq & pej), Yankee (colloq & pej)b) (Andes fam) ( rubio) (m) fair-haired boy/man; (f) fair-haired girl/woman* * *= gringo.Nota: Término peyorativo.Ex. Ling system♦ por sistema loc advsystematically;me lleva la contraria por sistema he always argues with everything I saySISTEMA EDUCATIVOThe Spanish education system starts with free nursery school from 3 to 6. This is followed by primary school from 6 to 12, and compulsory secondary education from 12 to 16, successful completion of which entitles pupils to a “secondary school diploma”. There is then a choice of a general course of study (“bachillerato”) or a technical one, both of two years. The bachillerato allows access to university courses, which can lead to a diploma or degree. In Latin America, there is great variation in educational provision from country to country. The end of compulsory education ranges from age 11 in Honduras to 16 in Peru, though in most countries it is between 13 and 15. Actual enrolment in primary school is high, even in the poorer countries, but about a third of secondary-school-age Latin American children are not actually enrolled. In a poor country such as Guatemala this rises to two-thirds, compared with the high level of secondary enrolment in Argentina, Chile or Cuba.* * *m system* * *sistema nm: system* * *sistema n system -
