23 -around, round, o about?-
Nota d'usoRound o around ( around è più comune nell'inglese americano) si usano entrambi in riferimento a un movimento circolare: The hands go round the clock, le lancette dell'orologio si muovono in tondo.Da questa “circolarità”, around, round derivano un significato di “dappertutto” nel senso di “tutto intorno”, che appartiene anche a about ( around è più comune nell'inglese americano): The toys are scattered about (o around, round) the room, i giocattoli sono sparpagliati per tutta la stanza.Con il significato di “attorno”, about è usato meno spesso rispetto a round (in inglese britannico) e around (in inglese americano): The guests were seated round the table, gli ospiti erano seduti attorno al tavolo.About si usa più comunemente di around con il significato di “approssimativamente, circa”: The company has about a thousand employees, la compagnia ha circa mille impiegati; round about si usa colloquialmente con lo stesso signficato: I think it's round about one o'clock, penso sia circa l'una; ma round da solo non si usa mai in queste espressioni. -
24 -curve o bend?-
Nota d'usoIl sostantivo curva può essere tradotto con “curve” o “bend”, a seconda dei contesti d'uso. Per indicare una curva sulla strada si preferisce in genere “bend”: La stazione di servizio è sulla curva, the petrol station is on the bend (non the petrol station is on the curve). In tutti gli altri contesti si utilizza la parola “curve”: La curva delle spese è la più alta sul grafico, the expenditure curve is the steepest one on the graph. In ambito sportivo, la curva allo stadio viene indicata con l'espressione “behind the goal”, o semplicemente con “end”: I nostri amici sono seduti nella curva, our friends are sitting behind the goal; curva della squadra di casa, home end; curva della squadra ospite, away end. -
25 -shade o shadow?-
Nota d'usoIl sostantivo shade significa “ombra” soprattutto nel senso della protezione dalla luce diretta del sole: The flowers need a little shade, i fiori hanno bisogno di un po' di ombra; to sit in the shade, stare seduti all'ombra. Anche il sostantivo shadow significa “ombra”, però prevalentemente nel senso della sagoma scura proiettata da un corpo esposto a una fonte di luce: the deepening shadows of the approaching night, le ombre della sera ormai vicina che si infittiscono. -
