15 King, Henry
1886-1982Henry King, hermano mayor de Louis King, es un personaje mitico en el mundo del Hollywood clasico. Nacido en Christianburg, Virginia, fue actor de teatro antes de entrar en el cine. Director de mas de cien peliculas entre mudas y sonoras, actor desde mitad de la segunda decada del siglo XX, fue capaz de dirigir dramas, historias de amor, comedias, peliculas de aventuras y, desde luego, un selecto punado de westerns. De sus casi 120 filmes, mas de la mitad son mudos y entre ellos hay que destacar un interesante western, Flor del desierto (The Win ning of Barbara Worth, 1926), con Ronald Colman. No demasiado creativo tal vez, destaca por la firmeza de sus puestas en escena, a las que dotaba de todas las virtudes, y de no pocos de los defectos inherentes a los guiones que manejaba. A partir de la realizacion de Jesse James su filmografia mejora notablemente, incluyendo algunos filmes de aventuras y peliculas de notable intensidad dramatica, co mo El cisne negro (The Black Swan, 1942), Captain from Castile (1947), La colina del adios (Love Is a Many Splen dored Thing, 1955) y la que seria su ultima realizacion, Suave es la noche (Tender Is the Night, 1962), basada en la novela de Scott Fitzge rald. Sus cuatro westerns son de autentica antologia y, paradojicamente, muy distintos unos de otros. Destaca el uso que hace, en los dos ultimos, del actor Gregory Peck. 1893-1972Nacido en Alemania, discipulo de Max Reinhardt, lle ga a los Estados Unidos a finales de la decada de los 20, con una importante experiencia teatral y cinematografica a sus espaldas como actor y director. En el primero de esos cometidos hay que senalar que trabajo en el Faust de F.W. Murnau (1926); en el segundo, es el autor de Geslecht in Fesseln (1928), un in tenso drama homosexual en el ambiente carcelario. En 1935 co-dirige, con su maestro, El sueno de una noche de verano (A Midsum mer Night’s Dream), mitica adaptacion de la obra de William Shakes peare. Cuenta, en su haber, con algunas otras peliculas importantes y/o de exito, como los biopics La tragedia de Louis Pasteur (The Story of Louis Pasteur, 1936) y The Life of Emile Zola (1937), por la que fue candidato al Oscar de ese ano, pero no es, desde luego, un especialista del western, genero que solo toco en una ocasion, ademas de su colaboracion, al parecer extensa, en Duelo al sol. 20 Douglas, Gordon
1907-1993La tan manida palabreja “artesano” se invento, sin duda, para definir a Gordon Douglas, un magnifico profesional, capaz de lo mejor y que no conocia la palabra “peor”. Una riquisima filmografia ilustra cualquier comentario elogioso que se quiera hacer acerca de este director, que realizo un punado de westerns, algunos de los cuales son, sencillamente, so berbios. Bastara con citar tres: Solo el valiente, un intenso drama claustrofobico, la enigmatica Embos cada y la itinerante Rio Conchos, modelo de virtudes cinematograficas. Neoyorquino, fue primero ac tor infantil, despues actor joven, mas tarde creador de gags para Hal Roach y, por fin, realizador. RKO, Columbia y, sobre todo, Warner Bros consumieron lo esencial de su labor como director. Fue para la ultima para la que realizo sus mejores peliculas, y tambien sus mejores westerns. Probablemente la obra maestra de Douglas sea su filme fantastico La humanidad en peligro (Them!, 1954), producto modesto pero de una intensidad casi nunca alcanzada en el cine de ciencia-ficcion.
