82 κλῶμαξ
κλῶμαξ, - ᾰκοςGrammatical information: m.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Formation as λίθαξ, βῶλαξ etc. (Chantraine Formation 379). From a verbal noun *κλῶμος, prop. *`breach', from κλάω `brake' (s. v.)?; cf. περικεκλασμένος `lying on uneven, rocky grund', of τόποι, πόλεις, οἰκίαι (Plb.). Of the full grade in κλῆ-μα ( κλᾶ-μα), κλῆ-ρος ( κλᾶ-ρος)? - Beside it κρῶμαξ `id.', κρωμακόεις κρημνώδης H., κρωμακωτός (Eust. 330, 40; Paphlagonian) with ρ from κρημνός (which does no belong to κρεμάννυμι)? - After Belardi Doxa 3, 210 as Pre-Greek to Lat. grūmus `heap of earth., hill'. A connection with κλάω (and further κλῆμα, κλᾶρος) is improbable. The form with ρ could show Pre-Greek variationPage in Frisk: 1,879Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κλῶμαξ

83 μακεδνός
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `tall, taper', of trees etc. (η 106, Nic., Lyc.); also as name of a people cognate with the Dorians (Hdt.).Derivatives: Also PN Μακεδόνες pl. m. `Macedonians', sg. - ών (IA.) wiht Μακεδον-ία, - ίη, - ικός `Macedonia, -nian' (IA.), also ἡ Μακεδον-ίς (Hdt.), - ῖτις (Ael.), i.e. γῆ, - ισσα `Macedonian woman' (Stratt.); μακεδονίζω `be pro-Macedonian' (Plb., Plu.). With long medial vowel Μακηδών (Hes. Fr. 5, 2, Kall.), - δονία, - ίη (hell. poet.). Beside Μακε-δόν-ες the form μακε-δν-ός seems to show ablaut, zero grade in the suffix, which is also seen (without variant - δόν-) also in γοε-δν-ός a. o. (Solmsen Wortforsch. 46). A suffixal, mostly primary - δόν- is at home in animal-names, some appellatives as well as in nom. actionis a. o. (Chantraine Form. 360ff., Schwyzer 529 f.). Not cognate with μακ-ρός, μῆκ-ος; cf. Specht Ursprung 199 u. 345. A by-form is Μακέτης (Gell.), f. - τις (Str., AP) and - τία, τη (AP), - τᾰ (pap.; Mayser 1: 3, 24); cf. οἰκέτης etc.; s. Schwyzer 498 n. 13, Krahe ZONF 11, 90. -Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: After Fick BB 26, 242 the Μακεδόνες were prop. "Highlanders" (beside Μακέτα *'Highland'). New, very daring and hypothetical interpretation by Pisani Arch. glottol. it. 33, 72: from *Μακι-κεδόνες "of who the Earth is high", from μακ-ι- (: μακ-ρός) and a Maced. word agreeing with χθών (s.v.); the second member is more than doubtful; the whole must be rejected. Doubts on the Greek origin of Μακεδόνες by Krahe Glotta 17, 159. -- Cf. μηκεδανός to μῆκος. Fur. does not discuss the forms. The name seems rather non-IE, so Pre-Greek; cf. Λακεδαίμων (cf. Fick, Vorgr. Ortsnamen 90). An analysis μακε-δνος is impossible in an IE word; also the form with τ points to Pre-Greek. The meaning of the adj. strongly suggests that it is cognate with μακρός, but this can hardly be accounted for in IE morphology.Page in Frisk: 2,163Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μακεδνός

84 πέλομαι
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to stir' (in compp.), `to become, to take place, to be' (Il.).Compounds: Also w. prefix (esp. in aor. ptc. περι-, ἐπι-πλόμενος).Derivatives: l. πόλος m. `axis, axis of the world, pole, vault of heaven, round disc of the sun dial etc.' (IA.); denom. ptc. ὁ πολεύων of the presiding planet ( Cod. Astr., PMag. a.o.). 2. - πόλος in synthetic compp. like αἰ-πόλος, δικας-πόλος (s. vv.), ἱππο-πόλος `horse-breeding' (Il.), νυκτι-πόλος `traveling by night' (E. in lyr.); τρί-πολος `ploughed thrice' (Hom., Hes.); from the prefixed verbs ἀμφίπολ-ος (s. v.: ἀμφι-πέλομαι, - πολέω), περίπολ-ος a.o.; cf. below. 3. Deverbatives: a. πολέω, - έομαι, often w. prefix, e.g. ἀμφι-, ἀνα-, περι-, προσ- `to go about, to wander around, to get etc.' (Pi., Att. etc.); also w. nominal 1. member, e.g. πυρ-πολέω `to watch a fire' (Od., X.), `to ravage with fire, to destroy' (IA.); besides, partly as backformations, περί-, πρόσ-πολος, πυρ-πόλος, πύρ-πολος a.o.; trans. `to turn (said of the earth), to root up, to plough' (Hes. Op. 462, Nik. Al. 245). b. πολεύω (χ 223, trans. S. in lyr.) `id.', from ἀμφι-πολεύω (ep. Od., Hdt.), where metr. conditioned for - έω (Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 368, cf. also Schwyzer 732); on the denom. ptc. ὁ πολεύων s. on 1. above. c. πωλέομαι, also w. ἐπι-, `to come or go frequently' (Il.) with ἐπιπώλη-σις f. `muster, review of the army' (name of Il. 4, 250ff. by Gramm., Str., Plu.).Etymology: The themat. presens πέλομαι, -ω agrees formally exactly with Lat. colō, - ere (from * quelō: in-quil-īnus, Es- quil-iae) `build upon, inhabit, attend, honour', with Skt. cárati, -te `move around, wander, drive (on the meadow), graze' and with Alb. siell `turn around, turn, bring': IE *kʷélō. An enlargement of it is Toch. B klautk-, A lotk- `turn around, turn, become' (v. Windekens Orbis 11, 195 f.); s. τελευτή. Because of the maintenance of the π- before ε πέλομαι must be Aeolic (Schwyzer 300, Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 114); the otherwise to be expected τ- is seen in τέλομαι, τέλλομαι, τελέθω, τέλος (s. vv.). The old connection with cattle-breeding and agriculture is found also in Greek, where the meaning of the verb further soon faded, in compp. as αἰ-πόλος, βου-κόλος (s. vv.), τρί-πολος. With the deverbative πολέω agrees formally Alb. kiell `bring, carry' (*kʷolei̯ō). The formal identity of πωλέομαι and the Skt. causative cāráyati is secondary. The zero grade themat. aor. ἔ-πλ-ετο is isolated. -- To the primary verb was, esp. in Latin and Indo-Iranian, built a series of new nouns. Old are ἀμφίπολος (s. v.) = Lat. anculus and several words for `car, wagon' (s. κύκλος). Note still περίπολος m. `patrolling guardian' (Epich., Att.) = Skt. (Ved.) paricará- m. `servant'; on the accen (Greek innovation?) Schwyzer 379 a. 381. The regular o-derivation πόλος may have an agreement in Lat. colus -ūs or -ī `distaff'; the comparison is however not unproblematic (s. W.-Hofmann s. v.). Also Toch. B kele `navel' could be identical wit it; diff. v. Windekens Orbis 11, 602 (Ural. LW [loanword]). -- Further forms w. lit. in WP. 1, 514ff., Pok. 639f., W.-Hofmann s. colō and collus, Mayrhofer s. cárati; further also Ernout-Meillet s. colō w. very important remarks. -- Here further πάλαι, πάλιν, τῆλε (s. v.). 85 σφῦρα
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `hammer, beetle' (γ 434, Hes. Op. 425, Hdt., A., com., Arist.), metaph. `strip of earth between two furrows' (Poll. 7, 145), as surface-measure (Daulis IIp), = τῆς σπορίμου γῆς τὸ μέτρον with ὁμό-σφυρος = ὁμόχωρος H.; name of a fish H. (cf. σφύραινα below).Compounds: Compp., e.g. σφυρ-ήλατος `wrought with the hammer, of wrought labour, sound' (Hdt., Pi., A., Pl. etc.) with - έω (Ph.).Derivatives: Demin. σφυρ-ίον n. (hell.), σφύρ-αινα f. name of a fish, bicuda (Stratt., Arist. etc.), after the form of the body (Strömberg 35); - ηδόν `hammer-like' (Philostr.); - ωσις f. `the hammering, forging' (Didyma IIa), = δίάροσις H., - ήματα τὰ σιδήρια, ὅτι οὐ χεῖται H.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: As zero grade formation beside σφαῖρα σφῦρα belongs prob. like σφυρόν (s. v.) to σπαίρω a. cogn. [impossible because of the σφ-]. As in the case of σφαῖρα, σπεῖρα, μοῖρα a.o. the formal proceß remains unclear; PGr. *σφύρ-ι̯α beside σφυρ-όν can be understood both as primary deriv. "the beating, bumping" and as secondary deriv. "beating, bumping apparatus, (hand)hammer, stamper". On an older word for `stone hammer' s. ἄκμων.
