1912-1991Nacido en Chicago y graduado en el Jesus College, Cambridge, encuentra trabajo en la biblioteca del film de Warner Bros, donde se inicia en tareas de montaje. Como director, empieza en 1946 con peliculas de presupuesto bajo, que fue capaz de trascender. En 1949 deja Warner Bros despues de ca torce anos de relacion con la productora y se establece como director independiente, lo que tiene la ventaja de poder abordar proyectos mas personales, y la desventaja de la inestabilidad profesional. Pocos realizadores poseen la habilidad que tiene Don Siegel para narrar en imagenes. Ausente de retorica, el aspecto visual de sus filmes es de una precision y sencillez dificiles de igualar, incluso en sus filmes menos afortunados. En una filmografia riquisima, llena de aciertos, destacan, a mi juicio, dos peliculas bien alejadas en el tiempo; por una parte, la mitica La invasion de los ladrones de cuerpos (Invasion of the Body Snatchers, 1956), no estrenada comercialmente en Espana en su momento, pero bien conocida a traves de la pequena pantalla, perteneciente al genero fantastico, cuyo “mensaje” progresista esta muy lejos de la habitual soflama. La segunda, un filme atipico que podria no ser considerado como un western, pero que en decision personal he decidido incluir aqui, aunque solo sea por su localizacion temporal, la de la Guerra de Secesion norteamericana, es El seductor (The Beguiled, 1971), introspectiva y cruel como pocas peliculas pueden llegar a serlo. Con mas motivo aun, puede resultar extrano considerar que La jungla humana sea un western. En este caso, me he dejado convencer, un poco a mi pesar, por razones de “atmosfera” narrativa, pese a que la historia se desarrolla en Nueva York, en epoca actual y en el ambiente del departamento de policia.Duel at Silver Creek. 1952. 77 minutos. 1923-2003Natural de Cleveland, Peter Tewksbury es, sobre todo, director de te levision, con un total de cinco largometrajes en su haber, rodados entre 1963 y 1969. Director ni fe cundo ni destacado, firma un western a la medida de Elvis Presley, que no fue la unica vez que se vio in merso en el genero. En esta ocasion, desde luego, con poca fortuna salvo, tal vez, para los incondicionales del idolo musical. Tewksbury dirigio en otra ocasion a Elvis; precisamente las dos ultimas peliculas del realizador fueron las que hizo con el. Cuando abandona el cine se dedica a una actividad cuanto menos curiosa para un hombre procedente del mundo de la imagen: dirige el departamento de quesos del Brattleboro Food Coop. 49 Lewis, Joseph H.
1907-2000Este magnifico realizador, nacido en Nueva York, empieza en el departamento de montaje de la Mas cot en 1935, de donde pasa a la Universal siempre en el mismo cometido, para terminar dirigiendo su primer largometraje dos anos despues. Ya en la primera etapa de su carrera como director muestra cualidades importantes como creador de universos visuales, logrando algun magnifico filme como The Invisible Ghost (1940), convencional muestra de ci ne de terror con Bela Lugosi como protagonista, que el talento de Lewis transforma en un filme me morable por muchos conceptos. Boss of Hang town Mesa, por su parte, es mucho mas que una pelicula de serie, rodada a la mayor gloria de Johnny Mack Brown. Aunque en esta primera etapa abundan tambien las obras poco distinguidas, el segundo periodo de la trayectoria profesional de Lewis, que podemos situar cronologicamente entre 1945 y 1958, abunda en obras maestras o que se acercan a esa calificacion. Empezamos con la magnifica My Name Is Julia Ross, para seguir con las esplendidas Relato criminal (The Undercover Man, 1949), El demonio de las armas (Gun Crazy, 1950) y Agente especial (The Big Combo, 1955), por citar solo algunas, ejemplos se neros de cine negro. Los westerns de esta segunda etapa son, todos ellos, de primer nivel, especialmente A Lawless Street y Terror in a Texas Town, filme modelico con el que Lewis cierra una estimulante filmografia. 1909-1993Nacido en Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, educado en la Columbia University, en 1928 pasa varios meses como periodista en Berlin. En 1929, con la ayuda de su hermano mayor, Herman, que dirigia el departamento de guiones en Paramount, es contratado como guionista. Primero se dedico a escribir intertitulos para poder proyectar las peliculas, ya sonoras, en salas de cine que todavia no estuvieran adaptadas al sistema; en 1934, ya consolidado como guionista, pasa a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer y despues a Fox, donde se convierte en director, con frecuencia de sus propios guiones, en 1946. Su filmografia es modelica, con obras de verdadera importancia cinematografica como Carta a tres esposas (A Letter to Three Wives, 1948), Eva al desnudo (All About Eve, 1950), La condesa descalza (The Barefoot Contessa, 1954) o Mujeres en Venecia (The Honey Pot, 1967). Es autor, tambien, de la extrana, intimista y desmesurada Cleopatra (1961-63), y de un estimulante western lleno de ideas vivas, de desverguenza y de sabiduria cinematografica.There Was a Crooked Man... 51 Wise, Robert
1914-2005Nacido en Winchester, Indiana, en 1933 abandona sus estudios de periodismo y marcha a California con su familia. Su hermano David le presenta a Jimmy Wilkinson, jefe del departamento de montaje de RKO, quien contrata a Wise inicialmente para transportar rollos de peliculas. Poco despues trabajara a las ordenes del montador de sonido y, dos anos mas tarde sera ayudante de montador. En 1939 sera ya montador, tarea que ejecutara en una docena de peliculas hasta 1943, en particular en Ciudadano Kane (Citizen Kane, Orson Welles, 1941). En 1943 debuta Robert Wise como director, en la unidad de produccion de Val Lewton, sustituyendo a Gunther von Fritsch, tachado de lento, en el filme The Curse of the Cat People, secuela de La mujer pantera (Cat People, Jacques Tourneur, 1942). Hara dos peliculas mas para Lewton, y permanecera en RKO hasta 1949 realizando un total de nueve peliculas, entre las que se encuentra un interesantisimo western, Blood in the Moon, que merece un analisis detallado. Pelicula mas de caracteres que de trama, es una muestra del buen hacer de Wise, no siempre bien comprendido. Otros dos interesantes westerns, pertenecientes a la segunda etapa de su carrera, mas eclectica, en la que alterna no solo buenas y malas peliculas, sino tambien una productora u otra, conducen a un exito deslumbrante, West Side Story (1961), con la que se inaugura una tercera, y definitiva, etapa creadora, la de los grandes y costosos proyectos, lo que no impide que aparezca en ella alguna que otra obra mas intimista. En conjunto, la filmografia de Robert Wise es bastante mas que estimable, y no es sencillo encontrar en ella peliculas francamente detestables. Al margen de las ya citadas, si hay que citar una por cada etapa, mi eleccion es clara, The Set-Up (1949), intenso drama centrado en el mundo del boxeo, Ultimatum a la tierra (The Day the Earth Stood Still, 1951), parabola humanista en plena guerra fria, y El Yang-Tse en llamas (The Sand Pebbles, 1966), superproduccion amarga y desencantada, con todas las virtudes y casi ninguno de los defectos del cineasta.Blood in the Moon. 1948. 88 minutos.
