5 γωρυτός
Grammatical information: m. (f.)Meaning: `quiver, which also was a bow-case' (φ 54).Other forms: Hesychius' χωρυτός will be due to ancient etymology, as appears from Ap. Soph. ( παρὰ τὸ... χωρεῖν). γορυτός H. may be just a mistake.Origin: LW [a loanword which is (probably) not of Pre-Greek origin] Iran.Etymology: Acc. to Benveniste Mélanges Boisacq 1, 42ff. a Scythian LW [loanword] (cf. on τόξον), containing the old word for `cow' (s. βοῦς), iran. Γω- in Γω-βάρης etc., and an unknown second member, perh. to NPers. rūda `intestine'; B. makes of this `cow-hide' and from there something made of leather, but this is not allowed. Cf. Morgenstierne KZ 61, 29f. As another meaning than `cow- hide' seems hardly possible, the first element is prob. not `cow-'. - Lubotsky suggests to me that it may come from *varūtra- `something that protects' (Skt. varūtar-). v- often becomes g- in later Iranian; the pronunciation may already have resembled g(w)- for the Greeks; - va- \> ō is trivial; note that this etym. explains the long u.Page in Frisk: 1,337Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > γωρυτός

13 ῥινός
Meaning: `the skin of man and animal, the hide, espec. the cow skin, cow hide, shield made of cow hide' (ep. Il.; cf. Leumann Hom. Wörter 314f. against Bechtel Dial. 3, 19f.).Compounds: Compp., e.g. ῥινο-τόρος `shield-piercing', adjunct of Ares (Φ 392 a.o.), of the θύρσος (Nonn.); ταλαύρινος (= ταλά-Ϝρινος) `shield-bearing' ('shield-enduring' [because of the weight?]; Richardson Hermathena 55, 87ff.; to be rejected Stanford ibd. 54, 121 ff.); usu. attribute to πολεμιστής as des. of Ares (Il.); on the history and explanation of the expression a hypothesis by Leumann Hom. Wörter 196 ff.; on this Trümpy Fachausdrücke 38 w. Nachtr.Derivatives: γρίντης (= Ϝρίντης) βυρσεύς H. (formation prob. after the primary ξάντης, ὑφάντης a.o.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: The notation γρῖνος δέρμα H. (Aeol.; γρινός Hdn. Gr.) confirms Ϝρῑνός, which is also seen in ταλαύρινος, which was connected with th same verb as ῥίνη (s.v.); so prop. "das Abreissen", resp. "die abgerissene Haut" like δέρμα from δέρω (to which a.o. Skt. dīrṇá- `torn up' with n-suffix like Ϝρῑ-νός). -- The Germanic long i derived from - ei- (cf. Goth. writs with short i), but this is impossible for the Greek form (the case is different with δέρμα, as δέρω means `flay', but *u̯rei-(d-) means rather `scratch'. So the etymology must be rejected. The word could be Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 2,657-658Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ῥινός

14 στεῖρα 1
στεῖρα 1.Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `infertile', of cow, goat, woman, also metaph. (Od., Hp., hell. a. late), `virginal' (Lyc., Luc.), second. στεῖρος (E. Andr. 711 as v. l. to στερρός), εὑνούχους στείρους (Man.), κατάστειρος (Vett. Val.; cf. κάτ-ισχνος a.o.).Derivatives: στειρ-ώδης `(looking) infertile' (Hp., sp.), - όομαι, - όω `to become resp. to make infertile resp.' (LXX, Phld., Ph. a.o.) with - ωσις, - ωτικός; - εύω `to be infertile' (Gal.).Etymology: Formation like πίειρα, χίμαιρα, μοῖρα a.o. (Schwyzer 494, Chantraine Form. 98). Old designation of an infertile animal, also of an infertile woman, in several languages retained. With στεῖρα agree esp. well Arm. sterǰ `infertile' from *ster-i̯- (as anurǰ: ὄνειρος; diff. Pedersen KZ 38, 244 a.o.; s. WP. 2, 640) and Skt. starī́-ḥ `infertile cow', all from * ster-ih₂. Another formation is seen in Lat. sterilis `infertile' (after gracilis, fertilis? Leumann Glotta 42, 118 against Mastrelli), Germ., e.g. Goth. staírō f. `infertile woman' (innovation; Schulze Kl. Schr. 60 n. 6), Alb. shtjerrë `joung cow, lamb' (- rr- polyinterpr., cf. Mann Lang. 28, 37) a.o. -- Further forms w. lit. in WP. l.c., Pok. 1031 and esp. W.-Hofmann s. sterilis. See Eichner, Sprache 20 (1974) 26-39.
