Анхель отказывается от денег и по договоренности с Пайком (за спиной Мапаче) забирает свою долю оружием и отвозит его односельчанам.Справедливо не доверяя Мапаче, Пайк передает ему добычу по частям и принимает бесчисленные меры предосторожности, чтобы целиком получить оплату. Дикая банда включена в нашу книгу лишь как историческая веха, после которой вестерн перестает существовать как фундаментальный жанр американского кино, обильно и регулярно снабжавший театры новой продукцией. Начиная с 70-х гг. жанр вестерна будет цепляться за жизнь лишь 1–2 картинами в год – зачастую значительными, но совершенно оторванными друг от друга. И даже в этих фильмах жанр будет рассматриваться как отмерший и потому вызывать ностальгию, желание подвести итоги, поразмыслить на тему замкнутого мира, лишенного перспектив к развитию. Влияние Пекинпа, могильщика жанра, и очевидно, и в высшей степени спорно. Он превратил вестерн в кровавую оперу, в бешеный водоворот, парадом аттракционов и замедленных падений пытающийся отвлечь внимание зрителя от несвязности и вялости действия. Фильм длится 145 мин и мог бы длиться вдвое больше или вдвое меньше без каких-либо существенных изменений. Начинаясь и заканчиваясь сценами бойни, он растворяет в бессмысленной и неестественной жестокости всякую психологию, всякие размышления о политическом, историческом или нравственном становлении героев. Вне этих понятий вестерн не имеет права на жизнь. Преклонный возраст героев добавляет их образам некую безответственность. В глазах режиссера с нравственной точки зрения между преследуемыми и преследователями нет никакой разницы. Одни не лучше других, и все в итоге обречены на гибель. Но даже их жестокость пасует перед зверской жестокостью мексиканцев, с которыми им приходится биться.
