nec u. neque, verbindende negative Partikeln, die von den besseren Schriftstellern mit dem Unterschiede gebraucht werden, daß in nec die negative Kraft, in neque aber die verbindende als vorwiegend erscheint. I) Wenn sie einfach stehen, dienen sie A) zur bloßen Anknüpfung eines negativ auszusprechenden Begriffes od. Gedankens, und nicht, auch nicht, quia non viderunt nec sciunt, Cic.: non eros nec dominos appellabant eos, Cic.: delubra esse in urbibus censeo nec sequor magos Persarum, quibus etc., Cic. – Dabei ist als eigentümlich zu bemerken: a) daß sich häufig die Verbindung auf den ganzen Satz, die Negation aber nur auf ein einzelnes Wort bezieht, et vidi et perii nec notis ignibus arsi, Ov.: nec dubie ludibrio esse miserias suas, Liv. – bes. ist dies der Fall in den Wendungen nec idcirco minus, nec eo minus, nec eo secius, neque eo magis, Cic. u.a. (vgl. Hand Tursell. 4, 401. no. 5). – b) daß sich noch andere Verbindungspartikeln anreihen, wie: α) neque vero, und wirklich nicht, und in der Tat nicht, Cic. u.a.: nec vero, aber auch nicht, doch auch nicht, Cic. u.a. B) zur Anknüpfung eines negativ auszusprechenden Begriffes od. Gedankens mit besonderer Beziehung auf das Vorhergehende: 1) erweiternd, und auch nicht, Stoicum est quidem nec admodum credibile, Cic. – So auch als Fortsetzung eines Imperativs od. imperativischen Konjunktivs, s. Hor. carm. 1, 9, 15; 1, 11, 2; 3, 7, 29; sat. 1, 10, 73. Plaut. capt. 437 (434), dazu Brix. – u. nach einem Satze mit ut (daß) od. ne (daß nicht), u. zwar nach ut zB. bei Cic. de or. 1, 19. C) zur Angabe einer Steigerung mit Hinweisung auf einen schon vorhandenen od. zu denkenden Begriff: 1) auch nicht, nicht einmal, ut, si in urbe fines non reguntur, nec aqua in urbe arceatur, Cic.: ea sublata tota sunt, nec mihi magis quam omnibus, Cic.: fortitudo tua praestat, ut neque hostes tui velint, Plin. pan.: mirifice etiam Thales: nam interrogatus, an facta hominum deos fallerent, nec cogitata, inquit, Val. Max. – 2) auch nicht, gar nicht, loquitur nec recte, Plaut.: qui nec procul aberat, Liv.: daher nec opinans, nec opinatus, nec opinus, s. necopīnāns, nec-opīnātus, nec-opīnus.
II) Wenn sie mit anderen Verbindungspartikeln korrespondieren, so steht 1) nec... nec od. neque... neque od. nec... neque od. neque... nec, sowohl nicht... als auch nicht; weder... noch, Cic. u.a. – Dabei ist als Eigentümlichkeit zu bemerken a) daß dem zweiten Gliede sich auch andere Partikeln beigesellen, wie neque... neque tamen, weder... noch auch, Cic. u.a.: u. neque... neque vero, weder... noch viel weniger, Cic. u.a. – nec (neque)... ne quidem, weder... noch auch nicht, ja nicht einmal, Tac. hist. 2, 82: u. so nec (neque)... nec (neque)... ne quidem, Cic. Phil. 3, 3. Tac.
