       ► В отличие от Лео Маккэри, который в Ужасной правде, The Awful Truth будет крайне экономно расходовать персонажей и декорации, добровольно уйдет в замкнутое пространство, будет черпать комизм в тонкостях актерской игры и поведения героев и в очень осторожных шутках, Капра, создавая Это случилось однажды ночью, еще один архетип американской комедии, пытается обогатить жанр всеми возможными способами. Насыщенность событиями и перипетиями: Это случилось однажды ночью заимствует бешеный ритм у приключенческих и полицейских фильмов. Постоянное движение, опасность, погони, хитроумные комбинации и фальшивые личности, важная роль натуры и ночной атмосферы - вот черты, характеризующие приключения пары беглецов. Капра также не упускает случая время от времени добавить в насыщенную канву своего рассказа социальную черточку: напр., мальчика, льющего слезы над матерью, упавшей в голодный обморок. Иногда в образ героини, которая влюбляется у нас на глазах, добавляется оттенок романтизма и даже мелодраматизма.
       Насыщенность интриги и органичность актерской игры не отменяют того факта, что в центре сюжета находятся совершенно банальные персонажи: наглый и самоуверенный журналист, подобных которому можно встретить в десятках американских лент той поры, и избалованная наследница, не знакомая с грубой правдой жизни. Ловкость Капры состоит в том, чтобы превратить их в среднестатистических граждан, придать им черты поведения, которые бы приблизили их к обычным людям и сделали бесконечно родными для публики. И все же в наши дни классическая виртуозность Маккэри, его точность в развитии и углублении ситуаций и, прежде всего, ослепительная пластическая изобретательность в работе с актерами ставят его гораздо выше почти пустословной беспринципности Капры и его склонности - временами очень плодотворной - не гнушаться никаким материалом. Однако главное открытие, которое можно сделать, сравнив Это случилось однажды ночью и Ужасную правду - разнообразие и пластичность американской комедии, жанра куда более податливого, чем кажется на 1-й взгляд из-за строгости ее условностей и законов.
       N.B. Это случилось однажды ночью известен как единственный американский фильм, награжденный 5 ключевыми «Оскарами»: за лучший фильм, лучшую мужскую и женскую роли (при том, что от роли Клодетт Колбер отказались Мирна Лой, Маргарет Саллаван, Мириам Хопкинз, Констанс Беннетт), лучшую режиссуру и лучший сценарий (***). Цветной ремейк в жанре мюзикла От этого не убежать, You Can't Run Away from It, снят Диком Пауэллом в 1956 г. с Джун Эллисон и Джеком Леммоном в главных ролях.
