1 The Thief

Этот прием сообщает фильму черты творческого эксперимента: виртуозность в сочетании с некоторой неоправданностью, чем он напоминает, к примеру, Даму в озере, Lady in the Lake, 1946, – фильм Роберта Монтгомери, практически полностью снятый субъективной камерой. Но в случае Вора выразительность все-таки берет верх над неоправданностью. Отсутствие диалогов прежде всего в максимально конкретной форме отражает диктат тайны, по определению царящий в шпионском мире. Кроме того, оно подчеркивает некоторые психологические и нравственные характеристики персонажей, действующих в удушливом мире нуара: одиночество, тревога, клаустрофобия, пассивность (кульминацией их выражения становятся съемки с верхней точки). Реалистичность натуры в Вашингтоне и Нью-Йорке придает дополнительную абсурдность передвижениям героя, сначала связанного по рукам и ногам служебным распорядком, затем бегущего от агентов ФБР. Прекрасно играет Рей Милленд (чем-то напоминая своего героя из Потерянных выходных, The Lost Weekend). Актер воплощает одновременно и самого обычного человека, из-за своей слабохарактерности угодившего в кафкианский мир шпионажа, и невротика, которому именно слабость и доброта не дают без потерь выдержать оказываемое на него давление. Мы даже видим, как, невольно совершив убийство, он переживает совершенно удивительный нервный срыв и разражается слезами. Это доказывает разносторонность актера, способного успешно играть добрых и измученных людей (такого человека он играет в этом фильме) и придавать незабываемую объемность циничным, коварным персонажам, в любых обстоятельствах четко отдающим себе отчет в своих действиях (см. При убийстве набирайте «У», Dial М for Murder; или Он же Ник Бил, Alias Nick Beal, Джон Фэрроу, 1949, где Милленд играет ни много ни мало самого Дьявола). К счастью, достоинства актерской игры компенсируют недостатки экспериментального хода с молчанием: надуманность, искусственность и излишнюю систематичность. Легко можно догадаться, что для приглашенного композитора фильм представлял собой необыкновенную возможность проявить свой талант и развернуться как следует в 90-мин пространстве. Тем обиднее, что такой выдающийся мастер, как Хершел Бёрк Гилберт, не смог лучше воспользоваться этой возможностью. Музыкальное сопровождение слишком назойливо и кажется недостойным восхитительного композитора Кармен Джоунз, Carmen Jones, Нагого рассвета, The Naked Dawn и Вне обоснованных сомнений, Beyond a Reasonable Doubt. -

Самым важным его решением стало приглашение Уильяма Кэмерона Мензиса, который создал огромные декорации, стилизованные в геометрической и абстрактной манере, – главный козырь фильма. С помощью Мензиса Фэрбенкс хотел создать то, что можно назвать «экспрессионистским фильмом наоборот»: то есть экспрессионистский фильм, наполненный оптимизмом и жизнерадостностью.Для Уолша эта картина была проходной; он не придавал ей большого значения – в отличие, например, от Аллана Дуона и его фильма Робин Гуд, Robin Hood, 1922, с тем же Фэрбенксом в главной роли. Но размолвка с Яном возвращает ее к реальности, и она понимает, что все их прекрасные планы - только праздные мечты. Она берет бритву и кончает с собой. Ее тело обнаруживает отец, только что убедивший прежнего жениха Юлии вернуться к ней.► Не картина Шёстрёма, Стиллера или Бергмана, а именно Госпожа Юлия стала самым знаменитым в мире шведским фильмом. В этом фильме действительно есть все темы, все визуальные штампы, а также атмосфера, характерная для кинематографического образа Швеции; светлая и бурная ночь накануне дня Иоанна Крестителя на фоне озер и лесов; подавленные чувства персонажей, временами отчаянно рвущиеся наружу; метафизическая тревога; война полов (излюбленная тема Стриндберга), в данном случае усиленная не менее яростной войной классов. Смелость фильма (в отношениях невротичной героини к мужчине смешиваются высокомерная властность и подчиненность; Юлия по-своему проживает конфликты собственной матери) постепенно поблекла с годами. Актерская игра значительно ниже того уровня, к которому приучил зрителя Бергман, и сегодня кажется почти академичной. То же относится и к раскадровке, и к самой режиссуре в целом. По-прежнему может представлять интерес то, как Шёберг осовременил и расширил в пространстве и времени замкнутый мир пьесы Стриндберга, которую режиссер ставил в театре в 1945 г. и где действие разворачивается только на кухне особняка. Фильм приобретает некое визуальное богатство за счет снов 2 главных героев (изображенных комбинированными съемками) и флэшбеков об их детстве. Много разговоров вызвал довольно смелый по тем временам план, где встречаются прошлое и настоящее: перед взрослой Юлией в тех же декорациях появляются Юлия в детстве и ее мать. Следует также упомянуть «флэш-форвард» - сцену самоубийства отца. Эта смелая стилистическая фигура, которую используют лишь немногие режиссеры (напр., Уолш в фильме Когда вор встречает вора, When Thief Meets Thief, 1937), ныряет в будущее точно так же, как флэшбек ныряет в прошлое. Здесь она показывает игру воображения героини, гипотетическое развитие событий после ее отъезда. Роскошная операторская работа Йорана Стриндберга талантливо воссоздает атмосферу деревенского праздника Иоанна Крестителя, который является своеобразным визуальным образом Швеции. В эту необыкновенную ночь в героине пробуждаются противоречивые инстинкты и в частности - беспокойство, тяга к бездне, которые ее никогда не покидали. -
