13 μῶλυς
μῶλυς, - υοςGrammatical information: adj.Meaning: `enervated (also mentally); dull, feeble, weak' (S. Fr. 963. Nic., Demetr. Lac.);Other forms: also μῶλυξ (cod. - δ-; cf. v. Blumenthal Hesychst. 42f.) ἀπαίδευτος, μώλυκα τὸν ἀπαίδευτον. Ζακύνθιοι H.; μωλυρόν νωθρόν, βραδύ H.Derivatives: μωλύω, - ύνω, - ύνομαι, aor. pass. μωλυ(ν)θῆναι, perf. med. μεμώλυσμαι, rarely with ἀπο-, κατα-, δια, `boil imperfectly, scald, simmer', med.-pass. `become powerless, fade away', esp. of wounds `fail to come to a head' (Hp., Arist.); μωλύεται γηράσκει, μεμωλυσμένη παρειμένη H. With the verbal nouns μώλ-υσις (- υνσις) f. `spoil' (opposite ἕψησις; Arist., Thphr.), - υτης ἐπέων meaning uncertain (Timo).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: With μωλύω (to which μωλύ-ν-ω; cf. Schwyzer 728) cf. κωλύω; the much more rare μῶλυς may be a backformation. With a velar μῶλυξ like κόρυξ νεανίσκος H. (s. κόρη); μωλυ-ρός like ἐχυρός, καπυρός a.o. (hardly with Benveniste Origines 36 to μωλύνω with ρ: ν -change), if not dissimilated from - υλός (cf. Leumann Glotta 32, 223 A. 2 = Kl. Schr. 249 n. 3). -- Because of the not very clear meaning and the unclear formation etymologically hard to asses. By Fick 23, 189, Bq a.o. connected with μέλεος (acc. to Bechtel Lex, 224f. and Specht KZ 59, 93 also ἀμβλύς); rejected by WP. 2, 285. After Prellwitz BB 26, 310 (accepted by WP. 2, 301 and Pok. 746) however to μῶλος. Diff. again H. Petersson Et. Miszellen 18: μωλύω to μολούω (s. μολεύω) as κωλύω to κολούω. -- Everything hypothetic. - The suffix - υκ- looks Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 2,Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μῶλυς

14 παχύς
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `thick, fat, well-fed, dense, stout' (Il.; on the use in Hom. Treu Von Hom. zur Lyr. 47 ff.).Compounds: Some compp., e.g. παχυ-μερής `consisting of thick parts, gross, massive' (Ti. Locr., Arist.); ὑπέρ-παχυς `too fat' (Hp.).Derivatives: 1. Copar.forms: πάσσων, only acc. - ονα (Od.), πάχ-ιστος (Il., Call.), - ίων (Arat.), - ύτερος, - ύτατος (IA.); Seiler Steigerungsformen 40 f. 2. πάχετος (rather with the Hp.mss. - ετός) = παχύς (θ 187, ψ 191, Hp.); also as subst.n. (Nic., Opp.; also ψ 191 possible), for *πάχεθος after μέγεθος? (Benveniste Origines 199); cf. Schwyzer 512, Chantraine Form. 300, Seiler 75. 3. πάχητες πλούσιοι, παχεῖς H. (after πένητες); Πάχης, - ητος m. as PN (Th.; Schwyzer 499). 4. παχυλῶς `in large draughts' (Arist.). 5. πάχος n. `thickness, strength, force' (since ι 324). 6. παχύτης (- υτής? Wackernagel Phil. 95, 177) f. `thickness'. 7. παχύνω, sporad. w. ἐπι-, ἐκ-, συν-, ὑπερ-, `to fatten, to batten' (IA.) with πάχυν-σις f. `thickening', - τικός `fattening, making fat' (medic.), - υσμός m. (Hp.), - υσμα n. (Aët.). 8. Aor. παχῶσαι `to fatten' (medic., Herm. 33, 343).Origin: IE [Indo-European] [127] *bʰn̥ǵʰ- `dende, thick'Etymology: With παχύς, if from *φαχύς (s. πῆχυς), agrees formally exact Skt. bahú- `much, richly, great, extensive'; from the full grade comp. báṃhīyān (for which with second. zero grade πάσσων) the IE base form appears as *bhn̥ǵh-; from there perh. also Hitt. panku- `together, united, general'. Semant. agrees perfectly Lat. pinguis `fatt', which differs in anlaut; perh. for * finguis through cross with the old word for `fatt' in πιμελή, πίων (s. vv.); diff. ( pinguis "early Italic") Haas, s. Leumann Glotta 42, 75. One compares further Latv. bìezs `dense, thick' and Germ., e.g. OWNo. bingr m. `heap, room (for corn etc.)'; uncertain Toch. B pkante (- atte) `size'. -- On parallel innovation rests the comparison Skt. bahu-lá- `dense, thick, extensive' = παχυ-λῶς (s. above). -- Details w. rich lit. in WP. 2, 151, Pok. 127 f., W.-Hofmann s. pinguis, Mayrhofer s. bahúḥ, bahuláḥ.Page in Frisk: 2,484-485Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > παχύς

15 πρᾶος
πρᾶος, - ονGrammatical information: adj.Meaning: `soft, gentle, mild' (Pi.).Other forms: πραΰς, πρηΰς (ep. Ion., lyr., hell.) -- Compar. forms πραό-(πραΰ-, πρηΰ)τερος, - τατος (πράϋστος Phrygia); adv. πρά-ως, rarely - έως; also - όνως (Ar., Lys.; after εὑδαιμόν-ως a.o.).Compounds: Also as 1. member (mostly late), e.g. πραΰ-μητις `mild-tempered' (Pi.); to πρευμενής s. v.Derivatives: πρα-ότης (Att.), - ύτης (LXX) f. `mild temper'; πραΰνω, Ion. πρηΰνω, also w. κατα- (rarely ἀπο-, δια- a.o.) `to make mild, to soothe' (Hes., h. Merc. 417) with πρά-(πρή-)υνσις f., - υσμός m. `the soothing', - υντικός `soothing' (Arist., medic.), - υντής m. (EM).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Unexplained. Of old (Curtius 283 with Bopp and Pott; s. Bq) connected with a verb `like, love' in Goth. frijōn, which is neither formally nor as regards the meaning unobjectionable. The o-stem πρᾶος developed perh. from the older υ-stem πραΰς, prob. through the adv. πράως, which may orig. have been contracted from πραέως and which can belong to πραΰς; this may have lead to the adj. πρᾶος, - ον; s. Egli Heteroklisie 100 ff. w. extensive treatment. The not rare ι subscriptum in πρᾳ̃ος is secondary (from ῥᾳων?; s. Debrunner IF 40 Anz. 13f.; alternative explanation in Egli 105 f.). After Osthoff MU 6, 89ff. however to Skt. á-prāyu- `uncessant, careful', which however belongs to Skt. pra-yu- `hold far, be absentminded, careless'; s. Mayrhofer s.v.Page in Frisk: 2,588Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πρᾶος
